Balls are definitely diff. Sanchez of Jays has blister issues for years stemming from these balls. Never had problem before.

The article I've been referencing said the hide is smoother as well. Contributes to blisters and reducing drag in the air.

Maybe some of these pitchers should go talk to Moises Alou.

Shoot, I had just made a much longer post but it didn't go through.

Anyway, I show this video to my Geometry students every year (it related to spherical surface area, and just for the love of the game). The only thing that is completely done with a human touch is the stitching.

Although this was uploaded to YouTube in 2015, the segment is part of an episode that was released in 2008, which means the amount of automation that you see has been going on for over a decade, maybe even two or three.

Nevertheless, since around 2017 there have been changes to the baseballs. Or the bats. Or both. Whatever the case, it would certainly be nice to go back.

To the untrained eye, a slow pitch softball and a fast pitch softball are also seemingly same (I mean they're far different, but players will pick up one or the other and be none the wiser). Heck, ASA vs. USSSA slow pitch balls are radically different when it comes to flight, but they are both very, very similar to the look and touch. Don't second-guess the fact that baseballs can't make similar changes.

                Here's the article I've been referencing: https://theathletic.com/1044790/2019...n-the-changes/

It's from The Athletic and behind a paywall, but this is what I've been referencing regarding what they've found to be the differences in balls this year from last year and back to 2000

^ Can't read the article, but I did read the part about Mazara's 505-foot home run, one which I did not see on video until just now.

For once, I actually do not have a dispute with Statcast's estimate.

To get off topic in the MLB off topic thread, but the Athletic is worthy of a subscription in my opinion. Good writers and great articles.

                        More MLBPA talk:

                        Service time brought up again.

The interesting part to me was at the end. Rebuilding teams hurt the industry? How is that their fault? You got 5 playoff spots for 15 teams. Last year we saw 7AL and 6NL teams who had at least 83 wins. Year before it was 5AL and 7NL.

So what exactly do they want the lesser teams to do?

Expanded playoffs would be nice. 6 teams make it. LWC is 3v6,4v5 in 3 game series. 1 and 2 seed get BYEs. LDS is still 5 game series, LCS is still 7.

We dont want some 70s win team in playoffs, but you do want more teams involved in playoff picture. If your team is projected for 84 wins and WC is at 90, you aren't gonna be as interested in September baseball. If you're projected at 84 and 6 seed is at 85, you got a shot.

You don't mean it that way, but it just reads like an attempt to appease people who don't care enough to watch their team when they're bad. I think there's enough teams in the hunt now, and I definitely wouldn't expand it so people who don't care can maybe maintain interest in the 6 seed.

Please never expand the playoffs anymore than it already is. Baseball doesn't need to be like the other sports where half the league makes it into the postseason.

I would very much prefer they go back to just an eight team playoff.
