Major League Baseball opening day team payrolls and salary figures for the years 1998-2025 and player salary statistics through 2026

The 98 season, Cleveland was 4th in payroll.

The current total of Clevelands payroll now would have them in the bottom 10 of payrolls in 1998!

Thats ridiculous, and not just Cleveland specific problem obviously. Let that sink in. In an era where the average payroll is 120m, you have teams who are less than a third of that!

Sadly, what owner would vote for a payroll floor?

Imo the cap floor should be 50% of whatever the league average was the prior season.

I do not have the answer to this, but one question I do question the context of that stat. What I mean is, in 1998, the NFL's salary cap was $52m and in 2021 that number was $182m. So, the NFL saw a cap jump of nearly 4x during that 23 year window you're looking at.

There isn't a cap in baseball, but there are 2 ways that I can think to look at it. The first is average payroll. According to Stevetheump, the league average in 1998 was $41.1M, and in 2021 that number was $119.7M (a 3x jump). We can also look at the bottom of the barrel each year. In 1998 that was Montreal with an $8.3M payroll. In 2021 the Pirates ranked last with a $31.3M payroll (roughly equivalent of the NFL salary cap increase over the same period). Where individual teams like Cleveland rank now vs. then may have changed, but the overall distribution (relative to the league average) has changed very little outside of the top (ie: StevetheUmp shows Cleveland with the 6th highest payroll in 1998, 145% of the league average. The 6th highest payroll in 2021 was 143% of the league average.)

So, the reason that I mentioned the NFL's salary cap to begin with. Baseball is not nearly as marketable as the NFL, and in fact it's arguably become a regional sport, but we've still seen large increases in payroll across the board. So, finances might not be as 1 sided as they seam. Also, there are clear distinctions between certain markets in baseball. In 1998 Baltimore's payroll was 175% of the league average. In 2021 the Dodgers were 197% of it.

I have no doubt that some teams are gaming the system, but I think this is just a reality of an uncapped sport. Markets like LA with their mega TV and huge population are just going to have more money to spend than small & mid market teams.

Meh it’s just a cell phone. People are going make a whole lot of noise about it though.

Also, I bet the whole league was doing it at that time.

Funny how the teams who seemed to be crying the most about others cheating are the ones cheating themselves.

Yankees went on about some guy in a white shirt 400+ feet away in the stands relaying signs to Jays players in the batters box.

              How the tables have turned.

Not sure how I feel about this

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- With one out in the second inning Saturday afternoon at Charlotte Sports Park, the Braves put runners on first and second base with Ryan Goins coming to the plate. Rather than walking out to the mound to go over a new set of signs with pitcher

If this is meant to combat the electronic sign-stealing, just stop that from happening. Let natural sign-stealing still be a part of this sport, and make good signs to prevent it from being picked. If this is meant to speed up the game, you're speeding up the wrong part.

It says in the article that Sanders shook him off on two pitches and Zunino called a new one through the device.

The calling of pitches and such is all in place just that it’s done electronically versus hand signs

I love the folks in this community, but any kind of change really is the devil on this site. Open mindedness and seeking to understand are invaluable skills in life.

I have no issue using an electronic device for signs, seems kind of strange they waited this long to try it when the NFL has been doing it seemingly forever.

If you really think about it, Astros were ahead of the curve here…

Probably because MLB doesn't teams to not abuse this in some way. If they did what the NFL does, and let coaches talk directly to players, you know there would be problems.
