Re: MLB Off-Topic
So the Pirates are cheap, we all know this. Teams cut guys in all sports to avoid paying bonuses, it happens. But when you're a team like the Pirates and a guy has played for you all year, it looks even worse. Rowdy Tellez was four plate appearances shy of a 200k bonus for the year. You designate him for assignment right before.
Great work Nutting.Comment

Maybe you should have a positive WAR Rowdy, and they would've considered keeping you on. This was his own doing. A bonus should be earned.
Is it cheap and was the rug pulled under him? Sure. Does he deserve the bonus, or do I think less about the Pirates organization for doing this? Nah, not really.
I would like to hear that this was one of those oblivious actions though, instead of doing it on purpose. Kind of like an "Oops, oh well" deal.
To be clear, he is the only active Pirates position player making over $1M with a negative WAR. The fans hated him. He was dead weight. Good riddance for them, I say.

And if I am a free agent, I'm looking at this like the Pirates are trying to get better. Keeping Rowdy does not make Pittsburgh better.T-BONE.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
It was mentioned in the other thread too, players are definitely gonna take notice of that kind of stuff. Or more specifically, agents. Rowdy's agent isn't some big name or anything, but I'm sure others will still take notice of this.
Why sign with a team who is offering you bonuses when they've proven they are willing to do what they can to not give you the bonus.Comment

I don't know. I'm on the other side of the fence here.

The Pirates stunk all around. If he was the hinderance your making him out to be now then he was the same hinderance months ago and should have been DFA’ed then (he absolutely should have and some wanted him gone a month into the season).
Knowing all that - you wait until 4 days left in the season in a move that is just all around a crappy move. They aren’t “getting better” with 4 days left in the season.
The DFA is a really weird message to send right now and will certainly be noticed. They didn’t even have to DFA him to avoid paying the bonus. Could have just not given him another at bat but I’m guessing Shelton wanted no part of that because he’s not naive and sees how rotten that would be.
Any defense to this is bizarre to me and I’m no Stan for the players with what they make. The guy should have been released awhile ago. You see no difference in waiting until now when his performance hasn’t depreciated in the recent months compared to where he already was?

If he was such “dead weight” and bringing the team down, why not DFA him at the beginning of September so you could put another player on the 28 man who you think has a chance to help the club compete next year and beyond? Why wait until he is 4 PA away from a bonus to do it?
Look I get it’s a business decision but if the defense to the questionable timing of the decision is because he was hampering the team not only does it fail to make sense but it raises even more eyebrows to the timing of the move.

I'm with you that you don't string somebody along for that long if you're not going anywhere and no significant changes were to be made, but I don't see a reason this guy should get a bonus. I don't know who's decision it is to cut short his PA count, but I'm not going to go on 93.7 The Fan and complain that they should "give him the bonus that he deserves."
Again, not defending the Pirates here. If this was a one-time occurrence though, I'll let it be. If they do this historically and we find this with more valuable players, there is absolutely a bigger conversation to be had.
But yes, I agree with you. Re: MLB Off-Topic
Looks like a lawsuit coming out of the Ohtani 50/50 ball.
One fan is suing the ones who are auctioning it saying that they forcefully obtained possession of the ball by holding him down and grabbing it from him (he says he was the original person to gain possession of the ball).
There's no doubt footage that will 100% prove exactly what happened, so will be interesting to see what comes out of it.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I've never heard of anyone getting DFA'd in the final week of a season before (unless disciplinary issues were involved). This was clearly a bad-faith move by the Pirates to get out of paying Tellez the 200K, I hope the MLBPA raises a big stink about this.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: MLB Off-Topic
It's such a shady thing to do. IIRC, hasn't the opposite happened before too? Different circumstances/owners, but I read something about how CC Sabathia missed out on his bonus because he got ejected during his final start of the season for standing up for one of his teammates, but the Yankees agreed he should get the bonus anyways.Comment

HoF pitcher getting his 500k bonus on "good faith" for an $8B organization with 100 wins vs underperforming position player getting 200k for a $1B organization way out for the playoffs are two different thingsLast edited by l3ulvl; 09-27-2024, 02:11 AM.Wolverines Wings Same Old Lions Tigers Pistons Erika ChristensenComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Pirates ineptitude allowed the player to have the chance at the bonus, then Pirates frugality snatched the opportunity out of his hands.
The Pittsburgh Pirates, ladies and gentlemen.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds
