Nice idea on the offical thread, now we don't have to hijack other threads and turn them into a Pirates conversation
More Random Thoughts
Oliver Perez definatly looked good today. Not overpowering by any means but he did get it done very well. Maybe it was Spin Williams tinkering with him but he looked a lot better, his fastball even looked like it had a little more bite. But with all the off days we won't see Ollie for another 2 weeks . I hope Mac doesn't have him come out of the bullpen, let him pitch on the side, don't make him work from the pen.
Just as I though Jack Wilson was a pure 8 hitter he makes me eat my words by hitting great in the 2 hole. Wilson has a hot bat and Mac should let him ride it out in the 2 hole. Have Kendall bat 3rd and bump Mondesi down, cause he looked terrible batting 3.
Well I think we have met out Pirate killer for the year. Adam Dunn almost single handedly wrecked the entire series for the Pirates hitting bombes in all 3 games.
And Tike Redman it's only one series but Tike seemed to take a large step backword. He was like 1 for 12 in the series and swang early at bad balls. Nothing like the end of last year where he waited and the worked the count and he did so well. Also in the field Tike was not too spectatular. There were a few balls that got over his head and that he didn't play very well. I don't know if he could have caught all of them but he could have given himself a chance. Only 6 games into the season so I wouldn't be too worried.
And on a final note howabout Jose Mesa. Came in and worked a 1,2,3 inning getting 2 K's. Wouldn't expect it too continue but he looked good for a shining moment. Bullpen in general did a nice job today even (gulp) Boeringer who struck out the side in his inning of work.
On to Chicago Benson vs. Maddox. Come on Benson up that trade value.Comment

Re: Official 2004 Pittsburgh Pirates GameLog/Chat
I'm not going to worry too much about Tike right now. He's probably pressing a bit as the entire offense is struggling. If he's still batting like this in June though, I'm going to have flashbacks of Adrian Brown.
Chris Stynes finally got a hit. It only took him 4 games to do it. Ugh.
I'm not ready to start dooming-and-glooming about Mesa quite yet. Other than last year, he's been pretty consistent at getting people out. I could be wrong, but he looks a lot thinner out there on the mound than he did last year. I think he really busted his butt to get into better shape and so far its worked (3 perfect innings).
Going back to Ollie (as you call him) I must admit I was prepared for the worst and was pleasantly surprised. I can't say I'm unhappy to be rid of Dunn for the time being. Luckily all of his HRs were solo shots, or this series would have been even uglier. Given the way everyone has looked once through the rotation, I'd rather see Perez pitch than Fogg.

Re: Official 2004 Pittsburgh Pirates GameLog/Chat
I'm just about ready to see the end of Josh Fogg in the rotation. I know he's only pitched one game this year and other then one innning he pitched pretty well, but I think he is pitching on borrowed time as a starter. His stuff worked once through the league because batters never saw him before, but now they know him and they hit him. He doesn't hit his spots enough to be a great finesse guy. Let Fogg plat out the year in the rotation and see what happens, but I just hope next year he doesn't take the spot of someone more desevering because he's a veteran.
And while were talking about OllieI was also really surprised to see what he had. I was ready to give him a couple starts to break in the new tinkering that Spin Williams did, but he came out and pitched well. I'm glad Mac stuck with him and didn't do something irrational and put him in the pen or send him down. The only other concern for Ollie is his workload. Over the last year, Winter Ball and the Mexican League he has pitched a lot. I'm glad to see they are limiting how much he does now. We don't want a 25 with arm problems from overuse.
On a last note cause I'm beat, I want to see J.J starting tomarrow. Put Craig at first with Simon out, and Mackowiak at 3rd to give Stynes a day off to celebrate his hit.
Last quicky how do you think gets bumped off the 25 man roster for the return of Bay?Comment

Re: Official 2004 Pittsburgh Pirates GameLog/Chat
I'm thinking they're going to try to sneak Humberto Cota through waivers once Bay comes off the DL. He's essentially useless, since he can't hit worth a damn (even for the Pirates), Kendall plays 95% of the games anyways, and Craig Wilson can always play catcher in a pinch.
The other option IMO would be to either send Meadows (if he has options) or Jason Boyd to Nashville. I really like what I've seen out of Johnston and Grabow, and we need two leftys in the pen.
Of course, we could always cut Boehringer“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in twelve years, we'll be voting for plants.” - Lewis BlackComment

I second that... I'm thinking a June release for him and Stynes unless they get a miracle or something. Didn't know there were pitt fans on here other than you LetsGoPitt.Comment
