Heh... Thanks! I had to get that out there at some point. I just love watching this guy pitch and the emotion he shows. Heck, he was even fired up to see Torres get out of that jam. Rarely do you see a pitcher on an under .500 team get pumped like that!

Good game, guys. In fact, the Braves and Bucs have had a few good games this year.

BTW, a name I heard mentioned possibly going to Pittsburgh for Benson was 3B/SS Wilson Betemit. Former top prospect who'd fallen on hard times the last couple years, but has regained some of his prospect status with a good season in AAA. Still just 23 years old, I believe.

The rumor was Betemit and "2 other prospects" for Benson.

Oh, I almost forgot. Speculation was that the Braves might have been showcasing former Penn QB Mark DeRosa to the Bucs tonight. He got a rare start at short, which raised some eyebrows. Maybe to prove to the Pirates he was capable of playing there?

Contrary to popular belief we are not trying to trade for every middle infielder in the league. The Bucs are logjammed at second/short and I don't think that Littlefield will be looking to add any more bodies to the problem.

Betemit? The name doesn't sound familar. So you say that he used to be a decent prospect but hit some hard times? Injuries? Hitting slowing down? Being pushed off by the other Braves stud 3b prospect Marte?(I think) This and some prospects may catch Littlefields eye so maybe something could happen.

DeRosa has also played 2B & 3B, as well as some OF & 1B. It seems unlikely, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Regarding Betemit: He made a rapid climb through the minor leagues, and in 2001 was considered the Braves best prospect, and one of the best in baseball. He was even called up to the big leagues in late 2001. He was definitely on the fast track.

He spent all of 2002 and 2003 in AAA, struggling through injuries and sporadic performance. He was given an opportunity this spring to make the Braves, but didn't make the cut. So back to AAA he went - for a 3rd straight year. When he got off to a slow start, many were ready to slap the "bust" label on him (I was one of them).

But, he's turned it around since. This is the first year he's been injury-free since 2001. Here are his stats (and remember, he got off to that slow start):

.281 AVG, 11 HR, 49 RBI, .825 OPS

Maybe he's finally turned the corner. As I said before, he's still very young.

His numbers look pretty good, though I think Littlefield is really looking for some guys who can fill in right away. I'm not up on Atlanta's rotation, but the three guys I've seen so far looked pretty good.

Congrats on the game today...one of those classic 1-0 pitching duels. Too bad we came out on the short end of it.

Ouch, it stings, getting owned by the Pirates. Thanks for giving the Pads an over-the-hill player (he plays like it). Anyways, the Pirates were impressive that series, Kip Wells pitched well, and Ollie mowed down the Padres.

I'm giving this thread some bumpage, even though the Bucs are being owned by the Cardinals (along with the rest of the NL)

Nice to see back around Pitt The Pirates talk has really died down. Maybe that's a sign that it's time to move on the Steelers talk.

The Pirates have been playing very well over the last month or so. Been playing good baseball(with the exception of getting wrecked by St. Louis today and yesterday). They have got a real nice team together and look to be building a strong core for next year.

And with about 3/4 of the season over

The Goods
Oliver Perez- This kid is a keeper. Becoming one of the best in the league
Jason Bay- If he cuts down on the K's he can become that much better.
Jason Kendall- Is having a great year in the leadoff spot. Really playing with a new desire this year(I mean have you ever seen him charge the mound?)
Jack Wilson- Had a great first half and is starting to slip but still a force in the field.
Tike Redman- Yes I'll put him here because he has really stepped up in the second half. He is proving he still deserves to be here.
Rob Mackowiak- Is doing great playing most of the time this year.
Daryle Ward- Great signing. really provides a spark to the offense.
