    They're gonna fall short.

I'm happy the Mets are contending, considering the shape of their bullpen and the fact that they've been bitten by the injury bug. This team seriously overachieved here, and even in a weak division I think it would've taken a lot to make the postseason. They just wouldn't have the legs(and arms) in the long run and the past week and a half was evidence of this. Now with Zambrano in the rotation.. UGH. This team isn't going to make the postseason with a pitcher that walks 96 batters in 128 innings.

I'm not too pleased with the trade for Benson, could've subbed in two or three decent prospects with a chance to make the Pirates or Royals instead of Huber who would replace Piazza in two years or so and Matt Peterson, especially since I am well aware of Benson's desire to play near his home in Atlanta(I read something about him recently moving there. If I'm wrong, oh well :P). Should've just waited to get Benson in the offseason and trade Wiggy and several other decent players for another pitcher, anyone but Victor Zambrano, at least.

Get Zambrano off this team, please

Armitage - No you're correct about Benson moving his family and house to ATL already. I posted that and it's been widely spread on the news here in PGH. He moved them a few weeks ago preparing for a trade. ATL is also where Benson grew up.

I was surprised with the prospects being thrown around as well. You actually got a good middle infielder in Keppinger. The Pirates let Jose Bautista go in the Rule 5 draft and have been wanting to get him back. I think that had a lot to do the Mets giving up Huber. I'm not sure it was a good move though..

Probably not, as Piazza's days as an everyday catcher are just about over. I think the Benson deal could've been done with three or four decent prospects with decent chance to make a major league roster instead of top guys like Peterson and Huber.

As for Zambrano.. the Mets gave up far, far too much for a pitcher that can't find the plate with elbow problems too(I'm starting to hear Zambrano has a bum elbow now, so again, please correct me if I'm wrong.) I would've given up Ginter or maybe Seo straight up for him, not much more than that. These deals were panic deals, something I think Steinbrenner/Cashman would've done if Steinbrenner fancied Benson or Zambrano. Cashman, though is far more intelligent in my mind than Duquette is

I believe that Zambrano has shoulder tendinitous. The Mets aren't sure when he will be ready to start. Benson on the other hand is going to start tommarrow against Atlanta. It will be his third consecutive outing versus the Braves.

Zambrano is a good pitcher if he's healthy but hello.....YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME. Why does Wilpon try to trick Mets fans by saying they didn't go after Guerrero becuase of potential injury problems, and then get two pitchers who have potential injury problems?

Armitage - Yes I believe the Mets could reverse the trade. It happened to the Pirates last year with a trade to Boston. The guy coming from Boston was injured and the trade was reversed. That was over a year ago so the circumstances are a little fuzzy.

If it helps, Peter Gammons is reporting that Tom Glavine's agent is also Benson's agent and the Mets believe that will help to re-sign him. I still think he'll go to ATL, but that's just me. He also said that Rick Peterson should be able to help Zambrano's wildness and could really get both Benson and Zambrano to reach their potential. Take it for what it's worth....
