This Victor Zambrano Deal may go down as one of the dumbest ever...EVER! Bring back Steve Phillips!!!!! I am just beside myself right now. We could have gotten much more for Scott Kaz.

It's a done deal, Kazmir to the Devil Rays for Victor Zambrano. the Mets also dealt C Justin Huber to the Royals for Jose Bautista, Bautista was then dealt to the Pirates in the Kris Benson trade.

It's a done deal, Kazmir to the Devil Rays for Victor Zambrano. the Mets also dealt C Justin Huber to the Royals for Jose Bautista, Bautista was then dealt to the Pirates in the Kris Benson trade.

I dont understand why they would want Zambrano? He doesn't have lots of control and has arm trouble. He is also 28 or 29 so he is no spring chicken. Why deal away a fireballing lefty pitcher is Kazmir for this guy? What was Duequet thinking? Dumb deal for the Mets that will hurt them in the long run. Why did they need Zambrano if they got Benson? Makes no sense.

According to the New York Daily here are the deals the Mets did:

ATLANTA — The Mets pulled the trigger on two trades this afternoon, obtaining Tampa Bay pitcher Victor Zambrano and Pittsburgh pitcher Kris Benson, the Daily News has learned.

The cost was high. The Mets shipped top pitching prospect Scott Kazmir and Double-A pitcher Jose Diaz to Tampa Bay for Zambrano and Triple-A pitcher Bartolome Fortunato.

They traded Ty Wigginton and pitching prospect Matt Peterson to Pittsburgh and catching prospect Justin Huber to Kansas City in a three-way deal. The Mets will also receive Jeff Keppinger.

Zambrano or Benson is expected to start Saturday against the Braves at Turner Field.

So what exactly do the Mets have left in the minor leagues? I am happy that they didn't trade away Milledge, but I think they pulled off some dumb moves. They traded away too many guys who could play next year or the year after that to make a run at the East that they are 6 games out of and have to beat 3 other teams. Why?

The GM of the Rays said dont be surprised if Kazmir pitches for the big club come September. I think that is too fast for him, but he is proptery of Tampa now. Zambrano actually has a 10-1 record in interleague games so maybe he will pitch better in the National league. If Peterson can get him to be less wild he might be nice 2nd or 3rd starter. If they dont sign Benson long term these deals are horrible because the Mets are not going to win the East this year.

The Mets really gave up some very good prospects for pitchers that may not work out and one of them (Benson) may only be a rental. The Mets sure are going for broke this season.
