    Re: Mets rumors

Wow, I'm glad I didn't have internet at home this past weekend and then OS was down on Monday!! Nothing like hearing that Kazmir is traded from the Braves announcing crew.

Somehow all the experts at ESPN.com have us in the "winners" column of their trade deadline reports. They must think that Peterson can do something with both these pitchers. Benson will be resigning soon as he's seen what Peterson has done with Glavine (not his fault no one wants to score a run when he pitches).

The more I think about this trade, I think that management did it looking towards next season. I don't know how Peterson does it, but he said he can fix Zambrano in "10 minutes" and that is why we traded for him. So unless Kazmir goes on to be the next Nolan Ryan, I'm just indifferent about these trades. They don't make me more excited, but they don't make me disgusted.

But hey, what do I know?? I'm just a Mets fan living in Memphis.

but you just dont trade your best chip for what will be a 5th starter. Regardless if he goes on the majors, it is silly. Some reporter just said that because of this deal, they are going to miss out on getting Wade Miller & Barry Zito in the offseason. Be glad you are in TN, fsquid.. everyone up here on the radio is ripping the Mets for the Zambrano deal...

I'm only trying to imagine what he could have been thinking and that is the only logical explanation. Victor has some great stuff, he just can't control it at all (like Rick Vaughn). We will see if Peterson is the guru that he is said to be.

what is keeping us from signing those guys in the offseason? There is no cap in baseball.

Duquette has said that Peterson was a major reason why they made the trades. He looked at both pitchers and the ones they were giving up and told them to make the deal. Benson I think will be signed long term soon. Benson really wanted to be a Met because he and Glavine share the same agent and he has heard great things about Peterson from him. Zambrano has great stuff and if Peterson can get him to walk less batters he will fit really well in the rotation. Reading some stuff on ESPN and CNNSI the experts feelings on Kazmir, Peterson, and Huber were mixed and they wondered how any of them would do in the Majors. Peterson to me seems like an over-hyped pitching prospect along the lines of Aaron Heilman. A nice 4th or 5th starter but nothing to fight over. Kazmir might be really good, but you really have to look hard to find a guy his size (5-11) that lasted as a starting pitcher. His long term career might be as a middle reliever or closer and if that's the case I dont mind trading him and getting Zambrano.

The two best Met minor leaguers are already playing for the big club (Reyes and Wright) so trading anything else to get some young pitching help is a good thing. The one thing I dont understand is why they didn't approach the A's about a deal for Zito that would have packaged Wennington, Kazmir, Seo, and one other player. Wennington would have played second for the A's and solved that problem, Kamir could be in the rotation a couple of years from now, and Seo could fill in the rest of this year and give them something at the 5th spot. Zito is the only one of the big 3 that likes Peterson and would love to be back under him. He is younger than both Benson and Zambrano and has career record above 500.

The Mets should also give up this year and switch Reyes and Matsui in the field. At least you would have your best fielder at his natural position and only one player would be learning a new position. Matsui doesn't have the range for short but will fit in at second. His bad throws will be minimized with the shorter throws from 2nd than short and he can relax more. It would also give him big league experience at his future position next year and give them a leg up on the training. Reyes and Wright would also learn how to play with each other sooner and that will only help going into next year.

                    Re: Mets rumors

I have a feeling they did try to make a move for Zito but Beane asked for Wright or Reyes. Beane probably did not want Kazmir, as he is not exactly what the A's build themselves on: college pitching. Beane and the A's scouts have a spectacular eye for pitching talent as their major league staff can attest to. When you produce Eric Chavez, Mark Mulder, Barry Zito, and Bobby Crosby from the first round of a draft and none of them have been busts, you must have a good scouting system. Too many teams have 1st rounders who are absolute busts.

I wanted Zito, but Beane probably was not willing to pull the trigger on the deal.

                        Re: Mets rumors

Maybe if the Mets had included an outfielder the A's would have pulled off the deal. Maybe the A's would not want to keep Kazmir but they could have used him as trade bait somewhere else if they woudn't use him in relief. Wiggy would have solved the hole they have at second and Seo would have been decent as a 5th starter to plug the whole of Zito. He hasn't pitched that well this season and with Hudson coming back soon Seo would get them along to the postseason where the big two and some mixture of the other guys would work out. Remember they also have Rich Hardena and he is really comming on. He would move into the 3rd spot and they would be fine. They do have one hole in the outfield and if the Mets could have come up with some quality outfielder (maybe Cliff Floyd) I think the A's would have made the deal. They know long term they can't sign Zito and to get a nice package for him now would be the smart move. I think the A's will still move Zito at some point but maybe they had to wait until the offseason to not upset some fans now.

After seeing Zambrano pitch 2 games, I think Peterson can help this guy and he can become a good starter for the Mets. He's got the stuff, he just needs to somehow find some consistancy. I'll look forwarrd to seeing what he does next year.
