Tomorrows Pirates game should be fun. If the WC is in Chicago, will make me even more nervous during the game .

Max Scherzer was a bloop single, an over-sized elbow pad, and a throwing error away from throwing three perfect games in a season.

And Greinke ups the ante even MORE with 8 IP 1 ER 8 K and his 19th win.

        How do you choose between...

        222.2 IP | 19-3 | 1.66 ERA (2.77 FIP) | 8.08 K/9 | 1.62 BB/9 | ~6.0 fWAR

        229.0 IP | 22-6 | 1.77 ERA (2.35 FIP) | 9.28 K/9 | 1.89 BB/9 | 7.3 fWAR

        229.0 IP | 16-7 | 2.16 ERA (2.04 FIP) | 11.55 K/9 | 1.65 BB/9 | 8.4 fWAR

I vote option C...but I think Arrieta is going to win it because Grienke/Kershaw will split the vote.

Could happen that way. Looking at Kershaw and Arrieta's lines, I'd actually be quite happy with a "co Cy Young" although that probably has no chance of happening. I really think they both deserve it. Greinke also has a good case, but he's been crazy lucky this year as evidenced by his .232 BABIP against, 86 LOB %, and 7 HR/FB% (all way better than his career norms). Arrieta has been pretty lucky too with .246 BABIP against, 80% LOB, and 7.8 HR/FB%. Kershaw has a more "normal" .280 BABIP against, 78.1% LOB, and 10.2 HR/FB%. It's hard to completely disassemble the luck from the skill in these numbers though. It's a great race and a great thing for baseball.

If there's any year for a Co-Cy Young this is it. It isn't out of the realm of possibility as its happened before. (1969) I mean how the hell do you choose between those 3?! Might as well give out two and let the other Dodger pitcher fume about it.

Doesn't WAR always win these days? We'll see just how much it has infiltrated if a guy wins despite having 6 fewer wins and 1 more loss than another guy.

Granted that Felix did lead the league in ERA so he still had at least one of the shinny objects writers look for when voting.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think the reason that a co Cy Young is almost impossible is because the ballot people have to rank their guys numerically (1-whatever) and the ballots are tallied up for each guy amongst 1st place votes etc...to arrive at a final numerical score. So that means that the numbers have to miraculously work their way out to a tie and the voters can't just get together to conspire and decide there are 2 guys equally deserving.

According to Wikipedia the current formula is:

Score = 7F + 4S + 3T + 2FO + 1 FI, where F is the number of first place votes, S is second place votes, T is third place votes, FO is fourth place votes and FI is fifth place votes.

The Trout vs. Cabrera debate of 2012 and 2013 says "absolutely not".

For the Cy Young, I think the voters have moved from looking at wins/losses to looking at ERA, which is why Scherzer isn't really in the conversation despite tossing two of the most dominant pitching performances ever in the same year.

It actually wouldn't be that hard if it were a two way race. Last year there were 30 total votes for both AL and NL Cy Young.

If 15 voters selected Arrieta for 1st, the other 15 selected Kershaw and they did the same splitting with the 2nd place votes evenly between them it would be a tie. In a 3 way race is much trickier.

All of this is a simplification on my part of course.

It's not stupid at all. He is essentially the 5th starter. He doesn't want to pitch out of the bullpen. He will not start at all in the ALDS, especially after starting on 1 day's rest the week before. If he won't come out of the bullpen, it's a wasted spot. And the playoff rosters can change each round I believe. There is nothing that says he won't be on the ALCS roster if they get there. It's smarter to get all the players you can that WILL play, whether you think they deserve to be there or not (which I have no idea who you are talking about but I'm going to guess Thole or a reliever).
