Re: 2015 MLB Hot Stove thread

Why is pitching more valuable than hitting?

You could certainly make the argument that certain avenues of acquiring runs are cheaper than others, but I don't see what makes the real value of pitching greater than hitting. If anything, with the inherent riskiness and volatility, I'd put it as less. But a run is a run is a run.

Except we'd probably flip him for two more pitching prospects.

And I'd rather have a good hitter than pitcher. Give me the guy who is going to start six times per week on average over the guy who will be lucky to make two starts in a week.

During the Winter Meetings at the earliest. But most likely afterwards maybe around Christmas.

Supply and demand...in this day and age I'd say a good hitter is more valuable than a good pitcher since hitting is scarce. In 2000, I'd take the pitcher every time.

From the sound of it. The Dodgers maybe moving on from Zack Greinke. They'll be looking at younger controllable pitchers via free agency or trades.

I mean, you see most teams clamoring for two or three aces to carry them through playoff series nowadays.

I expect the hot stove to heat up around mid December.

As for the Braves....I honestly don't understand this huge tear down. You have to have SOME pieces for when the team turns it around. Ah well....

                          Couple Blue Jays notes:

                          - Jeff Blair suggests the Jays trading Dickey for younger pitching

                          - The Jays like Dioner Navarro but strictly in a backup role and most likely being Estrada's personal catcher. Everything hinges on a couple things, Dickey being traded so then the Jays can also let go of Thole. The feeling is that Martin was quietly frustrated with catching Dickey and it took a toll on him mentally and physically. The other thing is the willingness of Navarro to take the backup role as he made it clear last offseason that he'd rather be a starter though there's a belief among those in baseball that he's no better than a solid backup these days.

                          - There is also suggestion that the Jays may spread the wealth as it were and not go too hard for a stud. They'll of course make an offer to Price but it's not expected to be something off the wall. Some names for the Jays being bandied about are Volquez and Zimmerman.

Dealing Dickey would be risky though, cause what SP would you even be able to get for him at this point in his career? Never liked the original Dickey deal to begin with, but his value obviously is lower now than it was when Mets dealt him. If they're all in for this year, it might be best to keep Dickey for now at least. If they're out by July, then some team can get him as a mid-season deal, where his age won't matter as much to teams since many teams give up alot just for a guy who pitches 2-3 months.

If Martin really doesn't want to catch Dickey alot, then it might be better dealing him, cause Thole on roster...not good. But SP isn't a position Jays are strong at, so dealing Dickey, and then you only got 2 locks for rotation unless something else major happens.

Only showing below direct quotes from Coppolella.

“I know it’s hard for our fans, but I’m not running for office. We are doing what I believe is what’s best in for the long-term interest of the Braves. I’ll trust our scouts and analytics.

“I’m getting so tired of this,’’ Coppolella told USA TODAY Sports on the eve of the quarterly Major League Baseball owners’ meetings. “If guys want to take shots, or (degrade) us, fine. But let’s let it play out for a few years before we start branding our pitchforks and torches.

"I feel in my heart this is the best for the Braves."

“Trust me," Coppolella said, “we are not tanking."

“I cannot make it any more clear: We are not trading Freddie Freeman," Coppolella said. "We are not. I’d give my right arm before we trade Freddie Freeman. It is not happening."

“I didn't expect it," Simmons, now a cornerstone in Anaheim with Mike Trout, told MLB Network, “but if you see what's happening in Atlanta ... you won't be surprised when you hear it's happening. “I'm happy to be part of an organization that's trying to win, win right now."

“There is a method to this madness," Coppolella said. “Judge our trades in two to three years. Not now."

“We want to win," Coppolella said. “I don’t think anybody wants to lose. It’s painful. But we had one bad season, not three of four years. If we truly were going to tank, we wouldn’t have had Aybar come back in the trade. If we were trying to tank, we wouldn’t have signed (catcher) A.J. Pierzynski. If we were trying to tank, we would have traded Maybin at the deadline last year, and we had plenty of offers. We want to win. And we will win. I’m not under any delusions that we’ll win 110 games, but we’re not going to lose 95 games again. We will win more games than we did last year."

“I get it, Simmons is real good with the glove," Coppolella said. “Real good. But there’s more to it. We like our trade. That’s why we made it. We feel we got more talent back than we traded away. You can make an argument that we are actually a team that can win more games with Aybar.

“To us, it’s just like five years ago when the Royals traded away Zack Greinke. Everyone was saying, “What are they doing? How can you trade a 27-year-old Cy Young winner?’ Well, how did that work out for them?"

“Or how about the Mets two-years ago when they traded their Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to Toronto for a kid in Double-A and another in high-A," Coppolella said, “How did that turn out?

“We’re not afraid of the criticism and taking the risk," Coppolella said, “but we’re tired of it."

“It's a very valued move to go get a top one or two or three draft picks by making sure your major league team is out of the market," Boras said. "If organizations do that and they do it consistently, they've been rewarded for it. There are grand incentives to tank a season. It’s very clear that 'draft dollars' are readily more valuable than dollars themselves. That’s a real problem."
