Looks like they reversed course. Either way I am fine with Dave Roberts. I posted a few weeks back I had a feeing he would be the guy.

This is the 2nd managerial hire that was originally reported as one guy then it ends up being another. I'm not sure what kind of philosophy Roberts will bring compared to Kapler.

Interesting hire to say the least.

Puzzling decision. Hope the Jays end up with Kapler.

Pretty sure he'll stay in LA and go back to his player development role.

The post I put up yesterday about Kapler was from Hardballtalk..........then 10 hours later Roberts was the guy. Kapler was the frontrunner from the begining, but Roberts has more experience on the bench. Dodger players did inform management that they preferred Roberts over Kapler. Some think Kapler would be perceived as a "puppet" for upper management. Kapler did anger a bunch players during spring training and in the minor leagues over player workout habits.

I think they made the right decision with Roberts. And, with him and Dusty, we're back up to 2 managers of color (for what it's worth). There were zero for a bit after McClendon was let go. Not that I like Roberts better because of that--I'm just not sold on Kapler.

Kapler's best years as a player came at the height of the steroid era, he flamed out prematurely, latched onto some good Red Sox teams as a specialist (kind of like Roberts), and I remember the guy somehow had his own commercial (lol!) like he was the next coming of Mickey Mantle/5-tool player. I remember watching it like, who is this guy?

He also managed the Red Sox's A class affiliate to a putrid 58-81 record in 2007. Not a fan of his TV work either.

C'mon man, you can't use that as a knock against him. Records don't really matter all that much in the low minors. Interesting stuff about Kapler though, sounds like he's a bit of a hard *** and then you have the whole "puppet" deal. Dave Roberts isn't going to be completely an old school guy as he spent some time working with Bud Black who's closer to the old school but has a good grasp of sabrmetrics and such. It will be interesting to see what happens in LA. I have a feeling Roberts will be more of a players' manager.

Yeah, but when that's your only managing experience...

It sounds like he's a better candidate for a front office job than as a manager. Or at least he should try to manage in the minors/get a bench coach gig for a little bit. Doesn't seem logical to just jump right into the Dodgers MLB position with a resume as thin as his. Friedman was smart enough to see that apparently.

I agree with you in general, I'd like to see a guy spend a good 3-4 years managing or coaching before getting an MLB gig. There are a few exceptions like Mike Matheny where the transition from playing career to managing at the big league level is near flawless.

I like Roberts. I said in this forum a few weeks ago I had a feeling he would get the job. I had no issue with either getting the job. I'm excited to see what Roberts does with this team. We need to get over the hump.

Also the Dodgers have checked in on Aroldis Chapman.
