Also I know FIP says he's basically the same guy with having the best defense in the sport but you can easily tell he's completely different this year.
Not trying to turn this into the Cubs team thread/discussion here, but just to your point...I don't see how Joe can go with an order other than Lester/Arrieta or Arrieta/Lester in Games 1 and 2. In fact, Lackey might be 3rd in the pecking order with Hendricks 4th although I'd probably have Hendricks start Game 3 over Lackey based on recent performance.

You can come up with all sorts of factors (maybe Kyle would be better suited for Game 2 since it would be at Wrigley and maybe you want a more experienced guy starting Game 3 on the road), but Kyle's lack of velocity could be exposed in the playoffs. I feel that velocity and stuff are even more paramount in the playoffs than usual because you're unlikely to out-finesse a good team with all of their scouting/focus squarely on you. I'm not comfortable elevating Kyle Hendricks higher than #3 for that reason. Arrieta and Lester have a better shot at getting by on stuff alone and when Arrieta goes bad you just yank him right away.

The Cubs are deep at starter and I was even thinking what about moving Jake Arrieta to the pen just for giggles? Imagine getting 5 IP out of whoever and then trotting Jake in for 2, Rondon for the 8th, and Chapman. That would never actually happen and it probably wouldn't even be a good idea, but the thought struck me as another way to manage the logjam at SP (at this moment, Jason Hammel might not even make the postseason roster, imo).

Pirates can pack it in now. I'm in favor of shutting Cole down for the rest of the year.

I would agree with you if Hendricks didn't miss bats but he does he has an above average strikeout rate to go along with the weak contact he generates. Arrieta command is still off and in the playoffs I'm more worried about that becoming a concern than hitting 96 on the gun.

Hanging on at a half game out of the 2nd wildcard spot. Really need the Nats to help us by beating the Mets, as I'm not sure we can beat the Cubs.

I'm glad I've been busy the past week so that I've gotten to miss most of Toronto's choking. Talk about a bad time to forget you're supposed to be an offensive powerhouse.

I think the Cubs will clinch the NL Central Division either by Thursday.

Gibbons may be fired as manager if the Blue Jays choke this year. Gibbons may never manage again, if they don't reach the World Series soon.

Barely. Hendricks has a 7.91 K/9 this season and the NL average for starters is 7.85 K/9. It's probably more accurate to say he's become an average strikeout pitcher whereas he had been well below average in the past.

No chance that Hendricks starts ahead of Lester or Arrieta in the playoffs so it's a moot point.

Wow...I went to bed with them up 4-1 (it was nearly 130 AM here) and thought they had that one wrapped up. Their bullpen has been so bad in the 2nd half...unfortunate.

Walker (Finally) talks with Mel Stoutemire Jr about things he can do/improve to maximize his success, Mel tells him to add a hip turn to his delivery, similar to Felix, and to utilize his secondary pitches more, so hitters aren't sitting fastball all the time. He's also been working on a changeup with Felix. His 1st start since, he fooled around and almost no-hit the Angels, who have been giving him isuues all season. Didn't even last an inning last game against them. Many people don't realize that Felix was struggling and inconsistent before he added his hip turn. Strange that something that subtle could make that big of a difference.

I don't know what's more upsetting: that it took this long for Godgers to say something about Taijuan or that he completely butchered the name of the son of former Yankee pitching coach, Mel Stottlemyre
