Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread

Last season, Miami became just the 10th team ever to have 3 outfielders reach base safely at least 250 times.

    They traded all 3.

For reference, the other teams were the 99 Orioles, 96 Indians, 35 Giants, 32 Indians, 32 Yankees, 31 Yankees, 29 Cubs, 21 Browns, 21 Tigers.

EDIT: I was curious so I looked up those OF trios.

Nice research. This is another statistic that drives home my frustration with the MLB's system. The poor Marlin fanbase that this is affecting is almost criminal, especially those that are paying for that stadium.

        Finally, some Machado news.

He and Tim Beckham are switching positions, with Machado moving to shortstop and Beckham to 3rd.

The NL Central is going to be a lot of fun...the Cardinals, the Brewers, and the Cubs are all legit.

It's crazy how quickly fortunes change in baseball...the Cubs may be the 3rd best team in their division now (pending their own moves).
Nah. The Cubs are still the top dog in the NL Central even if they do nothing else this offseason. The Brewers have major questions in their pitching staff. Much moreso than the Cubs. Adding a couple of outfielders isn't moving the needle that far for them. Here's Milwaukee's projected starting rotation at this point:

            Chase Anderson
            Zach Davies
            Jhoulys Chacin
            Brent Suter
            Yovani Gallardo
            Junior Guerra
            Brandon Woodruff

They're going to score plenty of runs, but they need to recapture the roll they were on last year and sign a guy like Darvish or Arrieta, or trade for someone like Salazar to really matter. They finished 6 games back of an underperforming 92-win Cubs team last season even getting a career year from Jimmy Nelson (who will be out until TBA).

Interesting to see that FanGraphs is projecting the Brewers to be below .500 (77-85) this season, although I think that projection was from before Milwaukee's recent spate of activity.

St. Louis scares me a bit more if Ozuna plays well and Pham repeats last year. With Alex Reyes coming back at some point, they could get hot. On the other hand, losing Grichuk is a big blow for them in the head-to-head matchups against the Cubs. He was a certified Cub killer.

It'll be an interesting 3-horse race in the NL Central, but ultimately the Brewers and Cardinals should be more in the wild card mix.

Still room in the payroll to add top SP according to Attanasio.

As I understand it that FanGraphs projection already accounts for the recent moves by the Brewers.

Then I'd question the validity of it. That projection says the Pirates will finish 1 game ahead of Milwaukee. That doesn't make any sense unless the data is from before Pittsburgh traded McCutchen and Cole.

Sounds like Ryan Braun will be playing LF, 1B, and 2B this season.

2B? Has Craig Counsel lost his mind?

Apparently, He hasn't played the middle infield since he was a SS at Miami.

He was awful at 3B...I don't see it going any better at 2B. I think this is something they might try in Spring Training...and then shelve it.

I would assume the only way he actually plays 2B is if the Brewers hold onto Santana, Phillips, and Broxton (Broxton has a minor league option though). He will play 1B though for sure from what CC said, but he did also say if they can't find a 2B in the open market they will plug him in at 2B from time to time. I'm with you though, they give it a try in Spring Training and realize it's a waste of time and move on.
