Spring Training is only a tryout for minor leaguers, though. As a major leaguer, if they have any need for it at all, it's to work the kinks out and get ready. Pitchers are building up strength, hitters getting back in against live pitching...it's not necessarily a place I'd want to be seen. Either way, a power play to what? Are media members invited to private workouts all the time?
I don't care if they invite the media or not...I'm talking about the front office folks. The way I think about it, if you are putting all of these FA's together and you want to get them signed, wouldn't you want to let people see them? It just strikes me as odd. What's the point of even having this spring training? These players could just work out on their own or in groups if they really wanted to.

As for media, the media covers spring training for every team...if this is a spring training, why keep them out? Heck...I'd want the media covering me if I'm trying to get signed. I don't see what they have to lose?

I don't think they did, I think it was an email that got sent to agents that one of them forwarded to Ken Rosenthal.

Regardless, it's not a showcase. It's a camp for the players to get in shape.

The front office guys have a chance to see the players. It says they can schedule private workouts. It's just the general camp is off limits to anyone but players. It's not a showcase. It's a training camp essentially.

Yes they could work out in groups...that's what they're doing. Working out in a big group. They don't want to set the precedent of putting on a showcase for front office people every year. If they want to see a player, schedule a workout. This isn't for front offices. They are in a union. They have to make decisions as a group, and for the group, for the present, and for the future. They can't just panic and mess up even more than they already have.

Does the media cover Spring Training? Is this not a spring training camp for unsigned players?

Again I don’t understand what the big deal is.

So you think they should do a Spring Training, in front of the media...just like Major Leaguers...while getting paid no money?

          I got nothing.

I’m sorry, are they not major leaguers?

That would be as crazy as agreeing to do something like the NFL combine.

It's not like this is a requirement for anyone not signed who could have chosen to continue their offseason workouts privately. They agreed to do this.

This is quite obviously a stance the PA is taking which I have no problem with personally but it's weird to just shut everyone out.

The NFL combine is a showcase. These guys aren't trying out.

They are choosing to continue their workouts privately. Like I said, I can't find any public union statements on this. As far as I can see, Ken Rosenthal cited an email to an agent with all of the details. It's only weird because it got leaked.

If scouts were allowed in, maybe that could lead to signings...

Apparently we at OS have more clarity than the players and agents on this issue. I mean, if i'm a guy at that "secret spring training" i'd be very much open to having people watch, especially front office guys. It could actually lead to some deals.

I have a feeling this is more on the agents who don't want to lose control of their players because they feel said players will probably cave in a situation like that.

Did nobody post about Wade Miley signing with the Brewers? Minor league deal with potential to be $5.7MM if benchmarks are hit (like making the team, for starters).

Not a bad signing for them. Has a pretty good chance of making the team.
