BTW - another discussion, but I'm not sure I like Darvish over him that much. I didn't realize how old Darvish is. I thought he was 2 years younger, but he's a few months younger than Arrieta. Who knows what they offered Arrieta, but I don't think Darvish is much better than Jake.

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
I agree with all of that...which is why when framing the discussion it should be about what he would do GOING forward. Instead I'm seeing discussion about what he has done in 2016/2017, which was pretty darn good to be honest. Not 2015 good, but still very good. I've seen you guys talking all offseason about how you want to re-sign him, don't want to see him in another uniform, etc, and now that the Cubs get Darvish it feels like "meh, good riddance Jake".
EDIT: And if I might just add...I'm glad Arrieta is getting a fresh start somewhere else (assuming the Cubs aren't still in play, which they shouldn't be) because it dawned on me that he was being treated with a "it's never good enough mentality" by those that held onto his 2015 performance too tightly. I count myself among that group, where a 3 WAR season is just "meh" as you say in that context.Last edited by WaitTilNextYear; 02-11-2018, 09:02 PM.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

You can start with John Lester and work your way back. You can make convincing cases for Bryant, Rizzo and Hendricks as well.

If we want to use stats to further the discussion, Arrieta had the 7th best WAR on the team that year. The two pitchers ahead of him were Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks.Boston Red Sox

I want him in Milwaukee cuz we need him and he'll have a chip on his shoulder to stick it to Chicago.

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
Which is why the original comment that spawned this is silly.
But, Arrieta might not have been in the top 10 players responsible for the Cubs' winning run in 2016...Let's see...Jon Lester, Aroldis Chapman, Kyle Hendricks, Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Addison Russell, Ben Zobrist, Dexter Fowler...that's 10 players? I'd argue that each one was more fundamental to the Cubs winning it all. Arrieta didn't have a bad year, but the team was loaded.
If you just want to go by WAR, Arrieta was 8th on the 2016 Cubs team. Ahead of Schwarber, Baez, and Chapman. But, it's hard to argue the importance of those 3 in the playoffs and World Series.
And to the dude saying that Cubs fans are "meh" on Arrieta just because he's leaving...that's total BS. As I said before, I love Jake and always will. This all originated from the guy saying Jake was THE driving force to the WS win, which is just ridiculous. Sure he played a part, but there were indeed about 10 guys who played a bigger part, and I would've told you the same then as I am now, so my opinion hasn't changed because he's not a Cub any more. There's also no denying Jake hasn't been as good since the first half of 2016 (he hasn't been bad, just not as stellar as he was during his previous stretch of dominance), but hopefully he'll bounce back because I truly do wish the best for him.Last edited by jeffy777; 02-12-2018, 12:10 AM.Comment

Haha, I hope soon.
I think I'm over Arrieta... Sign Cobb and trade for Salazar or Odorizzi.

Yes, this isnt a rotation that will lead us to victory, but last year our rotation finished 10th in ERA... The rotation above IS A LOT BETTER then what we had last year.
And we have our ACE coming back in June.Milwaukee Brewers | Green Bay Packers | North Carolina Tar Heels | Wisconsin BadgersComment
