If every team in the league breaks the rules and only one gets caught, it would stand to reason that they are doing something particularly egregious or outright stupid. Maybe he left the guys that were supposed to cover his *** in the Bronx lol.

Even if Blakely had been the one suspended for life, it'd make more sense. It'd be just as easy to assume based on what we know that Coppy learned some bull**** in his 10 years with the Braves and then brought Blakely over because he thought he had found a crack in the system. The point is we don't know. What we do know is that according to you the Braves are doing what every other team in the league is doing, and their front office got caught and punished. Makes you wonder what incompetence there is in the Atlanta organization if anything.
Atlanta got caught for one reason; Coppy is such a jerk that people turned him in (in fact, there are rumors that it was folks on the INSIDE of the organization that reported it, but who knows for sure). I'm not making up my own talking points here...I've read probably 100 articles since the penalty was handed down and the general themes are:

    1) The punishment was over the top because Manfred wants to discourage teams from doing this in the future.

    2) Every other MLB team is freaking out internally. One article I read quoted multiple GM's anonymously who said "this changes everything".

I'm not defending what the Braves did...they were wrong, they got caught, they deserve to be punished. I'm pointing out that every other team better start dotting i's and crossing t's because MLB is taking this seriously.

BTW - I still want to know what Coppollela did outside of this. To get a lifetime ban for this is is over the top. Lots of GM's have skirted the rules before...to get a lifetime ban is crazy.

If nothing else, given Blakely's statement basically saying "I was only doing what I was told" it's that there is not a lot of loyalty involved there. Seems like he "plead guilty" and was surprised to see that any of it came back to him and wasn't all on Coppy. Interesting that Jon Hart just slid away with no repercussions.

I think the Otani stuff is kinda holding things up at the moment.

I don't think it is now, if you had asked me a week ago it would've been. I think it's the 2 big sluggers Martinez and Stanton.

Partly but Ross Atkins made an interesting comment in regards to the slowness of things on the Blue Jays At The Letters podcast a couple days or so ago. Here's the quote:

“More teams now value players in a similar way,” Atkins said. “I think that’s good for baseball because that allows more trade discussion. I think what that then creates is more patience in free agency. To understand what’s available to you throughout trade, throughout free agency, and to make sure that you have a picture of the entire market.”
In essence, front offices are now thinking more alike and thus are playing the waiting game a bit more on the free agency side of things. Atkins also mentioned the major names as a factor in the slow offseason as teams are weighing what they want to do in terms of giving up big bucks or assets. (on the Stanton side of things)

Personally, I fear we might see something very much akin to this slow start in the big free agent class coming up.

According to Nick Cafardo the list of teams interested in Jake Arietta are the Colorado Rockies, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, and Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays.
