Knowing when to take a guy out is something that can be taught, it's not some gut instinct thing. With the emphasis on sabermetrics, and knowing that they're basically doing a Dave Roberts manage by committee, one of the biggest data departments in the league, he'll have all the help and information he needs to make those moves.
I don't really know what to say to you not believing him capable of doing the things that make a winning team given that you weren't in the interview, have no idea what was discussed, don't even know where he's coming from as a manager. Dude hasn't even had his opening press conference. Regardless, mark your calendar. 3 years.
This just makes no sense to me. Other than taking the starter out early in the 02 World Series, Dusty has never had a team that I would've expected to run through the league, that I look at him as the piece that blew it. If only he hadn't booted that double play ball in 03, oh wait, wasn't him. If only those Reds teams weren't trash, oh wait, he just manages. If only every DC team didn't do the same run the regular season and choke in the playoffs routine, guess that's son him. Given that none of those teams won anything with the manager that was there before or immediately after Dusty, I don't blame him for that entirely.
I think the number is 3 wins or losses, is the difference between a good manager and a bad one that's been worked out.
The only way you'd expect Dusty Baker to have won a championship would be if you believe the manager is the difference maker. Because I don't believe that, and have seen AJ Hinch and Ned Yost win rings, we'll just have to wait and see lol.
In an alternate universe where the Mets have 27 rings, we're talking about how poor of a strategist and bullpen manager Joe Torre was for moving a clearly superior shortstop to 3rd base and running relievers like Scott Proctor into an early grave. Alas, the wins erase all of that.
