It's July 1st, and the Orioles are 32 games back.

They're the first team to be that far back in the Divisional Era (since 1969).

Not only did a large chunk of Braves country (the figurative area as well as the actual market) not get the game, but Arizona and San Francisco couldn't watch an important NL West matchup. Hell, there are a lot of Cardinals fans in Mississippi that missed out to watch a game between New York and Boston.

I am so ****ing sick of having Yankees-Red Sox force fed down our throats every ****ing time they play. For all the hand-wringing done about the dwindling interest among the youth and pace of play, this **** is getting just as toxic. MLB is failing at promoting teams that are not the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers or Cubs. A smart league would be ramping up the crazy AL and West race between the out of nowhere Mariners and the defending champions or the still-wide open NL West just as hard as they're riding the AL East.

The MLB (and the stations that broadcast them) act like there are only two teams in the league and then complain when people don't find it interesting.

edit: bet y'all can't guess what the SNB game is this week

It also seems like he's totally showing genuine concern out there now too. Just a couple days ago he fouled off a 3-1 fastball, and uttered a very loud and audible F-bomb in doing so. He really believes in himself right now, which is one of the better things to actually hear at this point. It didn't sound like frustration, it sounded like confidence and expectation.

I remember watching a SportsCenter highlight of a game at the Metrodome where an umpire returned from a long absence from umpiring after something (maybe an injury or an illness, who knows). He was behind the plate for the game.

Anyway, there was a pitch that was maybe borderline or something, and a second or two after the catcher caught it he and the batter turned around to the umpire, who just shrugged his shoulders. Total "I dunno" moment. I can't remember if they officially declared it a no pitch or a ball, but it was one of the crazier umpiring moments I had seen before.

Again though, it's one of those moments that will be probably lost forever in the crazy ol' Blzer past and no article or video can retrieve what it is that I'm talking about. This day and age it will be simple enough through MLB.TV, but I believe we're talking about the late 90s on this play (if not 2000 or so).

If anyone remembers what I'm talking about and can back it, that would be an awesome retrieval.

I ended up having to watch the condensed game on MLB.TV late at night.

And boy oh boy... the play-by-play announcer was dreadful. Never called moments off the bat, ever. It's like he was a newbie at it. If you can, watch parts of the condensed game and see what I mean.

I'd like to know what his name is, and oust him as one of my least favorite PBP guys in the business.

EDIT: According to Watson's graph it was Kenny Albert. Thank you.

MLB Reddit streams boys. If you can't find a game on cable. That's the ticket.

The one negative I have about Heyward is as great as he's been at bat, he still doesn't have any stolen bases on the year. I'd like to see that aspect of his game return as well. Perhaps that's not in Maddon's philosophy though and he's red-lighting him more often than not.

Anyway, anyone catch this great play yesterday? We just talked about fantastic defensive pitchers, and this has the earmarks of everything great in the moment. Too bad it came at a cost (negative x-rays, by the way):

Clearly they were arguing more on principle than anything else. I mean there is a reason I own MLB.TV instead of going through Reddit or something or another.

I love the backwards hat though. You never see that in baseball during a game. So it really stood out.
