I think a hall for the best players in the game is somewhat diminished by not having the games all time hit leader. He should be put in as a player, where he added to the game's reputation - and not as a manager, where he detracted from it.

But this shouldn't be a Pete Rose thread. The hall-of-fame should be renamed the hall-of-swell-guys-who-played-baseball, some-much-better-than-others-but-no-*******s-allowed.
I creating Ryan Langarhans and put him in the braves roster, but not only my entire braves roster changed but other teams roster changed too. Why is that. Now if the braves or other teams trade or sign players, there will be no point for chsnging it. If u don't have online like me, u be sad too.

You make an interesting point about the all time hits leader. By referring to rose as this, you imply that this distinction in and of itself is worthy. Many would say the record holder for HRs in a season is a more prestigious record-- a more prestigious distinction.

I would say that careers and not seasons are what should be considered for Hall-of-Fame induction. Maybe some sort of a separate HOF for outstanding individual accomplishments in a single season... that way Maris can get in there for 1961 but not be on the same level as, say Ty Cobb, who was his clear superior across their entire careers (which I think that absolutely nobody would argue.)

Either that or make a Hall-of-Legends within the hall and put people like Cobb, Walter Johnson, Ted Williams, Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson etc in it, to differentiate... make people have to be in the HOF itself for 10 years before they could be voted up... they would never do it but at least it would differentiate the Mantles from the Mazeroskis.

I think that Maris should get in. Sure he didn't have the greatest career but there should be some way of honoring him and his magical season of 61 HRs.

I don't think the HOF voting is a joke. People say it's like a popularity contest then how come guys like Ron Santo, Gil Hodges, and Tony Oliva haven't gotten in the HOF? These guys are all under the vets comitee right now and they STILL haven't gotten in. If it was a popularity contest at least one of them should be in the Hall.

I also think that Thurmon Munson should be in Cooperstown as well. His career track was looking a lot better then his peers (Fisk and Carter) at the time of his death.

It's not really the Hall of Fame, it's a Hall of Numbers.
                    NFL: Tennessee Titans
                    MLB: Cincinnati Reds

It became a joke when they let Phil Rizzuto in for being a Yankee which is one example why it can safely be called a poplularity contest.

No, he shouldn't be in. Last night on Sportscenter Tim Kurkjian (or however its spelled) made it seem like Maris is acknowleged by the hall for this historic season by saying "Maris's name is already all over the hall of fame and I think thats good enough," and I would have to agree. Acknowlege him for his terrific season, but don't induct him into the hall based soley on that one season.

Heres the thing that I find interesting about a particular argument about it being one season. A lot of people suggest that letting him in for one season opens the flood gates but it doesnt really. Given that the single season record for HRs is one of the most revered records in all of sports, why cant this be THE exception? The difference between Maris and Brady Anderson is that Maris broke the single season HR record and Anderson did not so theres no real basis for comparison in that regard.
