Holy Moly!

Chris Shays made Rob Manfred look like an incompetant boob and furthermore took him from being a cocky, arrogant guy to becoming a sniveling little whiny brat!

The last panel was the most damning of them all. I can't believe that MLB announces agreements and contracts when they haven't even been committed to paper. It also seems that MLB has witheld information by not even submitting the latest draft of the policy as well. The testimony makes me wonder if the Keystone Kops are running baseball.

I"m glad that Waxman suggested that Selig should be out of the job. I think if there isn't any action done then 1 of 2 things will happen:

1. Congress will take away the anti-trust exemption

2. There's going to be a much more stringent drug policy mandated by the government for all sports (i'm thinking this is the most likely scenario)


MLB is in a world of hurt and the cmte. really exposed the incompetancy and institutional problems of Major League Baseball as a whole.

Everything you just said, I stand in agreement with. I only mention that because I have outwardly expressed my displeasure for the way this proceeding has been conducted in that it pointlessly called out specific players. Congress is negligent in going down this path but since I happen to follow baseball maybe some good can come from putting Seligs feet to the fire. He kept saying Im the pioneer in all of this steroid testing...Im the innovator in all this and kept emphasizing that Fay Vincent had no steroid policy. I was hoping someone would paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen and say, "I knoe Fay Vincent, I respect Fay Vincent....your no Fay Vincent." But alas no one seized that moment.

Seriously though, hes right and this is the shame of it all. He can give only one answer which is no and even then no one believes him. Just look at the comments about Sosa in this thread. The fact is that by Congress calling him out there is a stigma of guilt...which is why this was pointless coupled with the nonanswers.

You actually believe Sosa doesn't deserve to take the flack he's getting?? This moron all of a sudden can't speak English or understand what the hell is being said... a complete copout and utter disgrace to the Latin community.

McGwire is another one, repeatedly stating over and over "I'm a retired player." No **** you jackass, you don't want to focus on the past... we all wonder WHY? But ask him how great it was for that HR record run and WOOOOOOOOOT! Let's talk about that past! Idiot.

While Canseco seems like the lowest two bit goofball out of everyone there, his allegation, whether false or NOT, have brought to light a problem that SEEMS pretty prevalent in baseball.... but the main issue here is that the MLB should have a stronger policy against an illegal substance. THAT'S IT. It's sad that it took a person such as Jose Conseco to have the gov't address this, but at least it's out there FINALLY. But it makes you think were was everyone when Caminiti was pointing finger, then 6 ft under? (R.I.P.)

I actually have to give credit to Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling. The only two panelists I have any amount of respect for, Rafaels apparent honesty and sincerity in his answers and Schilling's responses being the reason.

But it makes you wonder... if Schilling can say that he believes the new policy WILL have an impact... and the MLBPA does NOT want blood testing... what are they hiding? What exactly are the negative outcomes to league wide blood tests?

Anyway, good discussion. I haven't commented much, but I have read all the replies... and you all make great points... but I still think (on a side note) that you can't call Bonds "the greatest player ever" with all this information. He's as guilty as they come, IMO. To say he "still would be as good" without Steroids is just speculation, as no one can say that...

My comment was more about perception regardless of whats fair or not fair. And this is what makes McGwire's comment on point. I dont think hes addressing fair/unfair as much as a reality of what is perception. Ill be honest with Sosa. People say he got big then recently he got small but it hasnt been noticable to me except for 1999 when he came off the banquet circuit after his 1998 season. My g/f says he looked a lot smaller in 2004 vs 2003, but again, I dont see it although Ive been given every opportunity to pile on. Oh and before you go thinking Im proSosa, I place a significant portion of the blame last year on Sosa. I cant tell you how many times that selfish f*** ended the inning with a runner on 2nd because he was trying to add to his HR total rather than score the run. I would really like to pile on but that would be dishonest of me.

His best 5 years of his career we're his last 5. Imaging when he's 45! That guy will really be great! ...unless there really is a steroid policy...

I don't know about that. I just consider McGwire to be a scared individual who is afraid to dampen his legacy. I also believe that McGwire did in fact take steroids. There is freakin' way that if he didn't that he wouldn't say that.

One thing that really irritated me was how that one Senator called him out and asked him directly..."Are you going to deny it?" and when he didn't say anything, he said "Do you wish to plead the 5th?". That really pissed me off.
