Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

If the sox could somehow manage to get both Peavy and A-Gon... I'd be in Heaven!

I think the deal would end up having to be something like:

Manny, Lowell, Bowden/Buchholz(one of the two), Mid-level prospect(Moss?) and $$$
    for
    Peavy, A-Gon, and a mid-level prospect

    EDIT:

That would give us this Lineup:
    1) Crisp / S
    2) Drew / L
    3) Youk / R
    4) Ortiz / L
    5) Varitek / S
    6) Gonzales / L
    7) Pena / R
    8) SS/2B
    9) Pedroia / R

    And this Rotation:
    1) Schilling
    2) Matsuzaka
    3) Beckett
    4) Peavy
    5) Papelbon

I think we would be giving up to much for just to get 2 players, considering one of the people we would be trading is one of the best right handed hitters of the last 25 years.

No doubt he is irreplaceable. But Gonzales is 24 and a beast and Peavy is an ace... I think that is about as fair a value as you will get for Manny.

If we get Gonzales, we don't need Lowell. He, and his horrible Fenway avg can go elsewhere and move Youk to 3B.

        You re talking a..
        24yr old power hitting 1B
25yr old power pitcher who has established himself as a workhorse and ace
        and a prospect for...

34yr old power hitting lf who wants out
33yr old 3b who didn't hit anything worth a damn in the second half(.257)
        a potential ace
        and a mid-level prospect

        Sounds fair to me...

If we could get that deal, I'd probably take it...but I highly doubt we'll be able to put it off.

Agreed. I really don't think we're going to get as much for Manny as people think.

I agree that we'd have to take it, if true. That's the best we'd get.

I love Peavy, but just out of curiousity...

what do you guys think of Adrian vs. Loney in LA? Which one makes the better pro when they've been around for a few years?

After seeing what Manny did to the Yankees last year, I'd think you'd be all for any deal that gets him out of the division.

I love Peavy as much as the next guy, but in all honesty, where does he fit in on the 2007 Red Sox? Would they kick a guy like Tim Wakefield to the curb in favor of Peavy? Even though that scenario probably makes the Red Sox a better team, it would be a disgrace to cast aside Wakefield like that. Perhaps they would be forced to put Papelbon in the bullpen.

And anyone who thinks in that scenario they could just give up on Matsuzaka isn't thinking it through. If the Sox broke off talks with him and Boras they would ruin their credibility in the Japanese market and no one coming from over there would want to play for the Red Sox.

We learned last year it's better to have too much pitching than too little.

And with Schilling gone next year, it doesn't create quite that big of a problem.

Hideki Okajima is guaranteed $2.5 million under the terms of the two-year deal he signed with the Red Sox on Thursday. Included is a $1.75 million option for 2009.

It sounds like an even better signing for Boston at that price. GM Theo Epstein said he envisions Okajima as a setup man and occasional specialist against lefty batters. The soon-to-be 31-year-old was introduced at a press conference today. "My name is Hideki Okajima, and I like Boston," he said in English before switching to an interpreter. "Call me Okaji."

All I can think of is

"My name Borat.... I like you.... I like sex!!"
“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on Sheffield

You are right in that you can't have too much pitching but the Red Sox also can't just take a talent like any of the ones projected to fill a spot in their rotation and banish them to the bullpen. It's possible someone would volunteer to work out of the 'pen to start the season, but I'm not sure that's something the Red Sox can count on. They also have the unknown that is Jon Lester (and Matt Clement, but no one expects him to be with this team in April).

Jon Lester, if healthy, will probably start in AAA to get his command problems under control.

                            Clement is done...

Also don't forget that, if asked, Wakefield would probably more than likely switch to the bullpen. He's done it before and can do it again, and if the team went to him and said "We need you to do this" I'm sure he wouldn't say 'no' or feel like they turned their backs on him.

There's no reason to believe San Diego would be willing to move Peavy, so I find it difficult to put faith in those rumors. Proven, talented starting pitchers under the age of 26 really aren't traded that often.

If Peavy was available in a Ramirez trade, the Red Sox would immediately have to accept. Having a set rotation for the next 4 years with a core of:

                                Jake Peavy
                                Daisuke Matsuzaka
                                Jonathan Papelbon
                                Josh Beckett

arguably makes the Red Sox the favorites to win the World Series every year. But again, I find it hard to believe San Diego would move their franchise player and face of the team.

Also, there should be no discussion of moving or relying on Matt Clement for anything in 2007. His right arm is mush, and no team would have any interest in obtaining his services. He will get paid, then become a free agent after the 2007 season.
