Duke's line was pretty awful, but it sounded like he gave up several cheap hits, and three of his runs came after a botched double play ball by Castillo. Hey...gotta be optimistic, right?

I've been fiddling with a few different avatars, this one probably won't be up for long.“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in twelve years, we'll be voting for plants.” - Lewis BlackComment

Originally posted by LetsGoPittThere was a nice blurb about Capps in the Post-Gazette today. He really seems like someone the Pirates could use. I especially like the fact that he hasn't given up a walk all spring, which is something I'm used to seeing way too much of from Pirates pitchers.
For what it's worth, I read an interview with DL and he stated that Capps is high on his list. Last year he said Maholm was that guy and the year before he stated Duke was that guy. So needless to say, expect him to spend some time at the MLB level this year and in the future.Comment

Originally posted by joebooDid you see his numbers combined in A, AA and MLB last year? 77.x innings pitched, 6 walks. That's impressive.

Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
Snell went again tonight.
5IP, 5H, 4ER, 2BB, 4K, 1HR
There was a nice wind out to center tonight though so those numbers might be a bit inflated. The closer and closer we get to opening day the more and more worried I get about the rotation.Comment

And at the risk of sounding dumb, why is Xander Berkeley your avatar?“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in twelve years, we'll be voting for plants.” - Lewis BlackComment

Originally posted by LetsGoPittHe definitely sounds like a guy who could be a setup man or even a closer in the near future. First thing you want those guys to do is pound the strike zone. Something that Gonzo hasn't done very well this spring, I might add.
I don't get Gonzo. 2004 he was dominant and had excellent control (43 IP, 6 BB). Last year, he lost it. He had that knee injury so I figured that might be the problem. However, this spring isn't making me feel better.
Gonzo and Ollie are so frustrating!Comment

Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
Listening to the radio driving into work this morning (Fox Sports with Tunch and Wolfley....Pirates guy Dan Potash was the guest). They were talking about the numbers in the spring - specifically starting pitchers.
Wolfley was concerned, but Potash stated it's nothing to worry about. Tracy isn't concerned and often, pitchers get beatup a little at the beginning of the year before they find their groove.
I can't say I'm not concerned a little. With a staff so young and unproven, I think they need to start off on the right foot. I'd hate to see Ollie walk a bunch of hitters and get tossed around in the opener. Same goes for the entire crew of young guys.Comment

Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
The closer we get to go time the more I get a little worried. I know how Spring Training is and that numbers don't mean anything but when you look at this staff there is nothing but question marks.
Everyone on the staff has excellent potential but you don't know what your actually going to get when the season rolls around. The Ollie from 2 years ago or the one from last year? Maholm and Duke from last year or the ones getting hit hard in Bradenton? Snell from spring training or the one from his last couple call ups to the majors?
I'm hoping for the best but this could be a long up and down season with the starters.
Pitt - Nicely done recognizing Xander, He was actually a character from the show 24 from a few years back and since there's a new season of the show in full swing I'm repping him. You guys see all these George Mason avatars popping up recently? I've been flying mine since before it was cool.Comment

Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
Like I said before, I don't put much stock in pitching numbers, especially with guys who are locks to make the rotation. Usually at this point in spring, those guys are monkeying around with things like new pitches, or working out pitches that they aren't as proficient at. So they're not pitching to get guys out so much as they are trying out their stuff.
On a different note, Jose Bautista is certainly doing everything he can to make the team. He even played shortstop the other day! If only he were already on the 40 man roster. In the meantime, the Post-Gazette is reporting that Carrera is a virtual lock to make the bullpen (argh!) and the human windmill (Jose Hernandez) is also practically a given. Personally, I'd rather see Bautista.
Karlos - believe it or not, I've never seen an episode of 24 (I can't commit to watching something every week b/c of my time schedule).“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
Thought I'd mention here, too, that John Thomson was scratched from his start today. Supposedly a "sore elbow", but more likely a trade. Only guy we're [Braves' fans] hearing is Wilson, though it's not unusual for Schuerholz to surprise us.
We should know one way or the other later today...Comment

Pirates cuts today - Bautista, Paulino, Edwards, Strickland and Reames.
Wells, JVB and Bullington go on the 60 day DL.Comment

Re: The 2006 Pittsburgh Pirate Thread
Nothing too suprising about the cuts. Moving those other guys to the 60 day DL opens up the spots to put Carrera and possibly Duckworth on the active roster.
Just came back to see the Pirates on ESPN. Got to see the last two whole outs. Jack flew out and Craig whiffed on a fastball on a 3-2 count to end it. Can't see the box score yet but Ollie started and it looked like he did well. The interesting thing is going to be seeing where his fastball was. Hopefully it topped out higher than 89mph.Last edited by Karlos05; 03-29-2006, 07:09 PM.Comment
