I've heard that when Zaun comes back that Gibby'll work out a platoon between the two catchers similar to the Molina/Zaun platoon a couple years ago. I think the main difference is that if Gibby has any brains Barajas will be getting most of the starts. I can see Zaun being Halladay's personal catcher no matter what though.

Nice work by the Jays hitters to make Joba work and eventually fall to pieces. Hopefully they'll have the same approach with "the moose".

Man, the offense had nothing today, and on a day when Litsch wasn't as sharp as he has been we really needed it to come up big. 0-8 with RISP was bad, blew chances for runs early in the 1st and 4th, something you just can't afford to do especially in Yankee Stadium.

EDIT: Another tidbit here in case you didn't see it, Gibbons said Wells is ahead of schedule and may be back in the Cubs series next weekend.

Yeah Litsch was bound to have a stinker. In other news, I think Rios needs to imagine everyone in pinstripes as that's the only way he starts hitting LOL!

Today is going to be tough against Chien Ming Wang. Hopefully they can scratch out a win.

We'll see how the rest of the game goes, but we let them back into it easily after getting the big inning. Nice to see the Jays jump on Cabrera's mistake and put home 5, but the pitching and defense (normally our strong suit) have been less than sharp thus far.

Edit after 8: OH WHAT A CATCH BY WILKERSON!!! Potential game saver right there, beauty play.

Well so much for that being a game saving catch. Why the hell was that pitch any where near the strike zone, forget right down the pipe. *sigh*, absolutely no way the Jays should have lost this game. They need to regroup fast or else they could start to slide.

Lengthy homestand coming up and there is absolutely no reason the Jays shouldn't take AT LEAST 4 of the first 6 games against weaker teams in Baltimore and Seattle. Hopefully they can make it at least a 6-3 homestand, and on paper there is no reason they shouldn't be able to. The Cubs might be a tough task, but they are sub-.500 on the road.

Is the book out on Ryan right now? Not that he was an enigma for scouts earlier, but it seems that in his two blown saves recently the opponents haven't been caught up in the bravado he brings to the mound and have taken advantage of his decrease in velocity this year.

I've noticed this not only in the blown saves but in every SO this year for Ryan. I think he needs some kind of offspeed/breaking pitch if he wants to keep being an effective closer. He only has one year left on his deal right? If that's the case i'd let him walk after '09 and make Accardo the closer.

He's signed through 2010 I believe. I don't necessarily think the book would be out on him now more than it was before, I just think he hasn't hit his spots when he needed to in his last two outings. He's given up too many walks, and don't even get me started that hanger right down broadway yesterday on the 0-2.

I just think that before Ryan's whole game was based around being able locate and blow his two pitches by guys, but now after the surgery teams are starting to note in their scouting report that he has decreased velocity. i

In most cases he isn't throwing his fastball and harder than your average starting pitcher, SPTO menioned him adding an offspead pitch to his repertoire, and I think that becomes almost necessary at this point because he can no longer throw hard enough to have the same kind of success as before with just a fastball and a slider.

That said it is still a relatively short time removed from the surgery, but I'm not sure if anyone really regains their full velocity after Tommy John, although Burnett was still able to throw quite hard after it.

Just picking up on the TJ surgery point but i've often heard that the majority of pitchers actually find their velocity INCREASE after surgery. So I dunno...Just putting it out there.

Some pitchers thow harder and some throw softer, it all depends on how the pitcher's body reacts to the "new" ligament. One thing I have noticed, although I may be crazy, is that his delivery seems more free and less violent than it was before. I wonder, if it is actually happening, that the slightly altered delivery may be causing him to lose his location and some speed. At the same time, though, he is still 12 for 14 in save situations plus another couple good innings in non save situations. I think he may have just had a couple bad games, which is bound to happen to a closer every now and then. We'll just have to see what happens next time he hits the mound, I guess.

That's a great observation about his delivery. I also wasn't 100% certain on how pitchers react after TJ surgery, for some reason in my head I thought I had heard it discussed that it was uncommon to come back from the surgery and achieve the same velocity as before. I think in actuality I was just mixing up recovery details about the common ACL injury in football with the UCL injury in baseball. Can you blame me after watching the Ducks lose four key players to ACL injuries this year?

While B.J. is 12 for 14 I haven't noticed him be nearly as dominant with his pitches as he was in the past, he's really struggling with locating anything on the outside against right handed batters which he used to be great at. He may still get stronger as the elbow improves, so the jury is still out.
