Idk bout Chapman but I know u guys gotta trade Cueto. Sorry but the Reds are headed in the opposite direction of everyone else in the Central and need to stock up cuz the farm is thin, especially with position players. It is a shame that you guys r gonna have to get rid of Cueto tho cuz not many pitchers can survive in that little league park. Just trade him to the AL please.

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
Cueto is not going to give us a hometown discount. His agent is saying the money they want is going to comp to Lester and Scherzer.
Meaning between $155-$200+ million.
Trade him. You can't let him walk for nothing.Comment

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
Sounds like the Reds have traded for Marlon Byrd. One of the players headed to Philly is pitching prospect Ben Lively according to Ken Rosenthal.
Edit: Phils are paying half of Byrd's salary. Reds waited till the trade market and free agent market dried up and got boxed in. So they made a low-cost, low-impact trade. Front office showed a lack of aggressiveness/creativity...and this is the result.
It's better than what we've rolled out in LF the last two years, but not enough to contend like ownership would like us to believe they are still contenders. They are banking on Joey Votto returning to MVP form, Jay Bruce playing like he did in 2010 and 2012, Todd Frazier and Devin Mesoraco continuing to improve....there are more things I could write down, but I'm feeling lazy.
That's a lot of unknowns to be banking on.Last edited by jasontoddwhitt; 01-01-2015, 12:09 AM.Comment

Hate that trade. Hate it. Walt could have gotten him dirt cheap 2 years ago but instead let Pittsburgh. Now he gets him when he's projected to fall flat next year.
Not to mention his awful option which will likely pick up b/c Byrd will get 550 PA.
At least on the bright side is that he's not a former Cardinal right?

That being said, a possible lineup of
Hamilton
Votto
Frazier
Mesoraco
Bruce
Byrd
Phillips
Saurez/Cozart
Is still a solid lineup. Health is the biggest key. Can Votto stay healthy? Phillips?
Assuming everyone does, that is 5 guys (Votto, Bruce, Mesoraco, Frazier & Byrd) who will likely hit 20 homers next year.

Yeah we got Byrd a little to late, should have blocked the trade in 13 so the Pirates couldn't of got him, and we actually could have used him too.
Personally I wanted Aoki because he don't strike out and gets on base, and would have been a good 2 hole hitter for us. We have enough swing and miss guys already, and Walt decided to add another, lol. Aoki probably wanted more than a 1 yr deal along with money, and with them feeling Winker is getting close, and Philly basically paying Byrds salary for us, they went the cheap route. Hate we had to give up Lively, but if Byrd hits like he did in 13 he will be productive for us.Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
If the Reds stay healthy they can compete in the Central IMO. Really, injuries have devastated the team in every year except for 2012 and 2010. Part of it is bad luck, part of it is older players, but I like that lineup if they can roll it out there most of the year.
Yeah, I feel if we stay healthy we have a good team, and we just had some bad luck last yr with injuries. Unfortunately when you have so much money wrapped up into 1 player, and have a bare farm system for a small market, you basically have to have some luck on health or else your not going far.
We stay healthy and Votto gets back close to what he was before he got injured in 12 we can have a potent offense. Your figure BP is declining in offense skills, but I think healthy he still is a above average hitter, so just being healthy I key for both Votto and BP. I think Bruce gets back to where he was before he got injured, so not really worried about Bruce, he will be back to hiting 30 HR and drving in runs. If those guys are themselves, to go with Mez, and Frazier that's a pretty good offense, with only Cozart being a sure out.Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
I would be surprised if the Scherzer deal didn't put the nail in the coffin on us signing Cueto long term.
Of course, it may have given Cueto incentive to work out some deal the Reds are stupid enough to do like give him 10 years but pay him for 20.#WeAreUKComment

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
I think its will be hard to sign Cueto with the way these contracts are going for pitchers now days. Cueto will probably be open to a home town discount to a point cause he likes playing for the Reds, but only to a point will he be team friendly.
While I would love to keep Cueto, I don't think it would be wise to go crazy on a deal, even if they are capable of it. We already have Votto's deal handicapping the team, we don't need another. Plus it never seems to fail, whenever a guy gets a huge deal they become injury prone it seems, lol.
Pitching is where were strongest at in the farm system, and while they are just that prospects, I think were going to have to hope they turn into something special, and we do have very good pitching coaches for them to learn from.
Pitchers now days are very fragile, and while Cueto hasn't had any major arm issues he has had quite a bit of time on the DL in the past, and you figure its only a matter of time before a major injury hits. There was a part of me that felt Latos was the guy to keep between the 2, but that was probably just splitting hairs because Latos being younger, and Cueto is the better pitcher.
Walt definitely has his hands full trying to balance finances along with fielding a competitive team. Ownership has shown they are willing to pay, but Id say they are probably at their limit. IM sure they regret now giving Votto that deal, but hindsight is always 20/20, and at the time I was excited as anyone about Votto staying a Red longterm, and I think the fan in ownership and Walt got the best of them in that deal, rather than sound business judgement. Hopefully Votto gets back to what he was before the knee injury set in, but him probably getting back to 1 of the most feared hitters in baseball is probably just wishful thinking unfortunately.Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
Unless Cueto gives the Reds a 9 figure discount they shouldn't even entertain the idea of an extension imo.
If I was Walt I'd try and package him and BP somewhere.
