There was legitimate concern about Billy. He didn't show much at the plate last season with Louisville. All they talked about once Choo left town was major league pitchers would just bust Billy inside all the time because he didn't have the strength to do anything with those pitches. Obviously he's adjusted and been fantastic after getting off to a slow start. I think it was okay to have some concern. Not re-sign Choo at $15 million/year concern though.

Choo was poor defensively in CF. They had a poor left fielder. Wouldn't have been hard to move Choo to left and play Hamilton in center genius.

We got a little more under .500 then was comfortable. I thought we might pack it in early and concede this season as just average. We still have a really good team, and getting contributions from Mesoraco and Frazier who we weren't counting on to hit so well have carried us to this point. Now it's time to call on the big guns to allow those guys to ease into a supporting role.

The starting pitching has been a god send. It's like the bullpen said, "We're gassed/ineffective," and the starters took the ball and didn't relinquish it. I really like that mettle, to be backed up against it, and the best pitchers on our team really put the team on their back.

There's plenty of season, and we're gonna need another strong summer push to challenge STL and MIL. Speaking of whom, I expect MIL to fall back down a bit but still challenge for the division and wild card. STL will probably step their game up too, in unison with the Reds just to block us from taking the division and play the Wild Card Death Trap Game.
I agree with much of what you say except the bolded part. Those guys are not projected as just supporting casts members, they are very much integral to the team succeeding. Mez was looked at as a future "middle of the order" power guy who is showing that is likely to be his future. Frazier had a good rookie year and a terrible sophomore season. But he has the talent, sans injuries and not listening to staff, to be a big time 3rd basemen in the league.

In fact, with the way Votto hasn't rebounded fully from his surgery 2 years ago and Bruce's consistent inconsistency, I would argue that Mez and Frazier are the future of the Reds offensively if they continue to improve.

Pretty clear the core of this team has changed and that is now Hamilton, Frazier and Meso

I still wish the Reds would have signed Morse. Could have had him for $6 million. Foolish to think a power hitter like Luddy could come back from a major shoulder injury. Can you imagine Morse in this lineup with everybody else? Wow

You're right. I would say that they were counting more so on Frazier, but Mes was supposed to get his feet wet as the featured catcher. I didn't think he'd be bashing a homer in 5 straight. I wouldn't expect that of anyone! But he's proven he can hit up here. Not to mention, he has to get some credit for the SP's stepping up, too. We always talked about Hanigan's ability to call a good game for these guys, maybe Mes picked some stuff up or maybe our pitchers are just great.

It is kind of scary how the core is shifting to Hamilton/Mes/Frazier. Like, in a good way. Bruce/Votto are only what, mid-late 20's? Phillips is a bit older but still, the point is it's nuts we have 2 "eras," if you will. And playing simultaneously and all in different positions.

I really hope we can capitalize on these fortune. We gotta do it before the new core commands huge contracts for their work, too.

I'm hoping this recent hot streak is the beginning of something bigger. I'm still in disbelief that we swept up the Giants. Those guys were right there with Milwaukee for best record in the NL, just had a no-hitter, and it was in California. We're supposed to be getting swept out there, not them!

Still a lot of work to do. But it's nice to see we are currently leading the race for the 2nd WC.

A difference a month makes....people on the web calling for firesales after that 4-0 shutout loss to Josh Collmenter. Price calls the team out in the media (could you imagine the previous manager doing that?) Since then, the Reds are 20-9.

Sad though that despite such a hot month, we've only picked up a measly game and a half on the Brewers. They leveled off in May (when our bats took a vacation) but they had a hot June as well.
