    Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves

I get that, to an extent. But when you know you aren't going to win in 2016 or probably 2017 at this point, those controllable years don't do much for you. In 2018, Simmons will be 28 and making $11 million. He'll no longer be the bargain he is now. With Miller, we got another major league player that is controllable for longer.

For Mallex Smith, he needs another year in the minors anyway. At that point, he becomes your 4th outfielder or you can move him or Inciarte. I don't think you can reasonably start them both long term unless you find a surprising source of power at a non power position like Catcher. Albies is still 2 years away, minimum (whereas Swanson will probably be up in 2017). At that point, if Swanson's defense is adequate, you have options. If Albies is a terrific defender and Swanson isn't quite up to par, you can move Swanson to second, where he played for a while in college.

On Swanson, if you believe MLB.com's ETAs he is projected for 2018 as well as Albies.

Yeah I understand Simmons's contract situation when ATL should be good again and I was fine with him going except for the fact that it was just another piece of our Braves that was gone, and one I wasn't expecting. I am just ready for the tear down to be done and let us start getting to know these new guys as we see them trickling into ATL over the next 3 seasons. I just hope Freeman makes it through the rebuild. He's under control through what, 2021? That's plenty of time for ATL to become relevant again, but for the fans that go to games and watch the games now, we need someone on the team that we can claim, and at this point Freeman and Teheran is it.

I saw somewhere else (can't remember where, tbh) that said sometime in 2017. He's a college player and they tend to move up faster. We'll see. He's only 99 abs in, so it depends on how well he starts.

Yeah, that's true. I think Simmons was also a case of his offense not improving like they hoped, and his defense regressed slightly. They said they absolutely aren't trading Freddie, and it's hard to go back on that.

Well, they aren't going to be 95-100 win team. They could very well be quite competitive Astros style. If Teheran pitches more like 2013/14 and the last 2 months of last year and less like he started, Wisler builds on last year, and Blair is up and productive.

              Good. That'd be selling low.

Here's what Kiley McDaniel wrote on Fangraphs back in the draft (ironically he was announced in October as Atlanta's assistant Dr. of Baseball Operations):

Swanson was an advanced defender with a light bat in high school, then played second base his first two years at Vanderbilt and over the summers. Scouts got their first recent look at him playing short this spring and it still works. Swanson is a plus runner with fringy raw power and a strong 6’1/190 frame. He’s a contact hitter with more 10-13 homer power that wears out the gaps and would be a nice 6th-10th overall pick most years, but a high probability shortstop with some ceiling is hard to ignore in this draft.
Watching some video of him, there isn't much weight transfer and barely any stride. I don't see a 20+ HR power with his stride and body type but he's got a good compact swing that should translate into a .300/type hitter.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

He's a middle infielder, so I can absolutely live with 10-15 hr with a lot of doubles and a high obp.

Reports that teams haven been calling on inciarte. Kind of a tough call. Finally got a bat, but could we potentially turn the Miller trade into another big haul?

Shouldn't trade Ender Inciarte. He's better than Shelby Miller.

He probably is. But if you can get another haul for him. I know the goal of the Miller trade was a major league bat, so I can't see them immediately moving him for less than that. The Cubs did reportedly come in 2nd for Miller by offering Soler, so if we could get him, I'd ve good with that.

Soler had a negative WAR though while Inciarte had a 5.3.

Unless we just get bowled over, I hope we keep Inciarte. He's basically a faster Heyward with a bit less power.

We still need to add some pop, but I like Inciarte in center. Wish we could dump Bourn on somebody.

One-time Vols QB signee (he was drafted before he enrolled) Casey Kelly acquired along with a minor league catcher for Bethancourt.
