Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread
I really wish they would just make Cody Reed a reliever and be done with it, the kid just cant cut it as a starter. I think he could possibly be a descent reliever still, although I wouldnt be disappointed if they just dump him altogether.
Its a shame we didnt get anything out the Cueto deal that has panned out. Finnegan, I had some hope in, but how he acted like a whinny little b#### when he got demoted, made me sour on him. As before that, I thought if nothing else Finnegan would make a quality reliever, I suppose he still could come around, and figure it out, but he didnt do anything to help his cause in the minors.
Between getting crap for Cueto, and giving away Chapman and getting nothing back, is a big reason why this team hasnt seen really any progress in this rebuild.
I think we need some better scouts. In baseball you miss more times than not as a scout, but this has been rather pathetic.
While I dont think we will every overtake the Cubs for being the joke of baseball all those yrs without a world series title, but we are starting to become a joke with this crappy rebuild. Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread
Well this dreadful season has finally came to an endI sure hope the Reds front office, gets it right with whoever is the next manager. I think Riggleman did a good job, considering the mess he was handed. Was it enough to remove the interim tag, I dont know. I like Jim, I think he is a good man, and I dont think you can question his knowledge of the game and his in game decisions. There is no doubt he was better than Price at in game decisions, but he should be, he has much more experience managing. And IMO he is a better in game manager than Dusty was. I liked Dusty, and most players loved playing for Dusty, because he was a players manager, and they played hard for him, but some of his in game decisions were questionable thru the yrs.
But with Riggleman its not his ability to managed games and his decision making in games. I think the question is or should be, what do the players think of him to lead them as the manager. Do they have trust in him to lead them to a World Series, should be the question Dick Williams should ask all the players, or all the main core guys, like Votto, Suarez, Scooter, Barnhart, as well as I would want to know what the pitchers think of his ability to lead them to where they want to go.
Barry Larkin has already been ruled out, which I was glad to hear, not that I dont like Larkin, he was 1 of my favorite players, although Davey Concepcion will always be my shortstop, as Bench will always be my favorite catcher and my favorite all time player, but I do like Larkin. I also think in time Barry may very well be a good manager, but he himself has said he isnt ready to managed in the bigs, and is happy doing what he is doing with the Reds.
Im sure many Reds fans are saying John Ferrel because he won a World Series as the Red Sox's manager, well there is a big difference in managing a big market team like Boston with a open wallet than there is managing a small market team. Let alone its easier to manage in the AL than the NL, due to the not having to make as critical decisions due to the AL having a DH, makes it easier. But a big market like Boston can be tough to deal with, but thats only when your losing, that its tough on a manager, lol. Personally Im not a big on Ferrell being the manager if they go that route.
Nor do I think I want Joe Girardi either, although Joe did a heck of a job with the Yankees, considering he managed some of their lesser talented teams, and was still competitive. But rumors were the reason Joe was not kept was because he didnt mesh well with younger players, so that doesnt bode well considering how young we are. But I do think Girardi is a good manager.
Ive said for a couple yrs now that Pat Kelly would be my choice, if you can have success in the minors, with players coming and going as they do, then you should be able to manage in the big leagues and be successful. He is highly regarded around baseball for his knowledge of the game, Ive heard several say, no one knows the game any better than Pat Kelly. So if the players buy into Kelly, and trust he can get them to where they want to go, then thats who IMO they should hire.
Obviously to some extent a manager is only as good as the players he is given, as no manager, not even the great Sparky Anderson can win with crappy players.
I wont be overly disappointed if Riggleman stays on as manager, and they are able to keep the coaching staff intact. Nor will I be overly disappointed if they dont make Riggleman the manager either. I just hope whatever they decide to do, works out. This rebuild has not went well, and IMO a big part of that was giving away Chapman for nothing in return. Its one thing to trade away talent that you cant afford for prospects that end up not panning out, that happens all the time, but when you give away a talent like Chapman, for basically nothing in return, thats just flat out ignorance. I dont know if it was Jockety who pushed to get rid of him, or if ownership just didnt want to deal with a player who was charged with domestic dispute, but whoever it was that pushed to get rid of Chapman for nothing in return, needs to not be a part of any baseball decisions being made.
Hopefully 2019 we start to see a team that can compete for the Post Season. Teams that start rebuilding at the same time, and even after us have seen it payoff in playing winning baseball, while we seem to be stuck in the mud.Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread
Im happy to see that the Reds are doing a extensive manager search. I just hope the pick the right one, and I hope its not Brad Ausmus. Ausmus sucked with the Tigers, and Im not sure which was dumber him or Matt Williams when he was the manager of the Nats.
I like some of the names I have see that they have interviewed. Im dont think I saw Buck Showalter being on the list of interviewed candidates. But maybe I missed his name. Not that I think they should hire Buck, I like Buck, and I think he got a bad rap over not bringing Britton in that WC game, although it was a dumb decision, he is far from a bad manager.
However much like Dusty Baker, Buck can get a team to the postseason, but cant win once he gets there. Granted Buck didnt always have all the talent that Dusty's teams had. As Buck did more with less, while Dusty did less with more, lol.
I just hope they pick a manager that uses both old school and new school thinking in his approach to managing games. Because if your stubborn in all old school thinking, or all new school thinking, you wont have the ultimate success, which is to win a World Series.Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

I’d like to see the Reds promote Farrell from scout to manager or bring in Girardi.
If they promote Buddy Bell from special assistant to the GM to the dugout, my head may explode.

Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread
Girardi has withdrawn his name according to rumored reports, and seems to be staying with his gig at MLB network.
David Bell is the favorite according to this same rumored report. The Bells have a long history with the Reds, I wa a huge fan of Buddy as a player, not quite old enough to remember Gus Bell, lol.
Not sure how I feel about David Bell, if he is the guy. Pat Kelly has long been my guy if were staying in house of in the Reds family that is.
To me Girardi would have brought instant credibility, he is a proven winner as a player and manager. Although reports of why the Yankees didnt bring him back after getting them 1 game away from the 1 World Series last yr was his lack of connecting with the young players. How true that rumor is, I dont know. Honestly I just wonder if it wasnt just time for a change, Joe had been with the Yankess for a very long time, which is odd for a Yanee manager, lol.
Farrell, I truly dont want to see, IMO he won a World Series due to all the talent the Red Soxs had. Heck Dusty Baker, could have guided that team to a World Series title, probably, or maybe not
I dont know, Im just not a fan of John Farrell to be the manager of this team.
Honestly Girardi would have probably been the best guy, just because he is a big name who has proven himself. Yes, he guided a loaded Yankee team to a World Series, however, he was able to manage some of the least talented Yankee teams in a loaded AL East, and keep them competitive in the yrs they missed out, or just barely snuck in to the Post Season.
So obviously Girardi would be the safe pick, and for a guy who supposedly had trouble connecting with young players, he still got them to 1 game from the World Series last yr. So You cant deny he got guys to play hard and up to par.
When I saw that David Bell was a candidate, I had a feeling he might be the one who came away with the job. If Girardi withdrew his name, I would love to know why he did so. Was it something he didnt like that he heard while meeting with them, or simply just decided he wasnt ready to go back to managing just yet?
The 1 person, I will be pissed if they hire is Brad Ausmus, I dont like him, I didnt like how he handled things when managing the Tigers. My biggest fear is they will make him the manager. I would rather they bring back Dusty, atleast Dusty, would get the team to play competitive ball. Dusty's problem was he could win in the Postseason, as his team always choked. If it happens 1 time, you blame it on the players, but when it happened as often as it did with Dusty, you got to start putting some blame on him, along with some poor decisions he made at times thru his career in the postseason.
I truly cant stand Ausmus, Ive been a life long Reds fan, I come from a family line of Reds fans as well on both sides of my family as well, but man if they hire Ausmus, it will be hard for me to spend the money to buy MLB TV so I can watch all the Reds games. Obviously I will still root for them, regardless, but I cant stand Ausmus.Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread
Well its official David Bell is the new skipper of the Reds. Not my 1st choice, but atleast its not Brad Ausmus. Bell is from Cincinnati, and understands the history of the Reds, and he has baseball pedigree, although that dont mean your automatically going to be a good manager.
So I guess will just have to see, and I will give him the benefit of doubt. However a manager is only as good as his players are, so these young players got to start to show something, if not maybe its time to make changes to scouting department.Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread
Wow I cant believe the Reds were able to make that deal with the Dodgers, to get Puig, Kemp, Alex Wood, and Farmer, for Homer, Jeter Downs, and Josiah Gray, along with the Dodgers giving the reds 7 million on top of the deal.
I hated seeing Jeter Downs in the deal, as I think the kid will be a good one in time, but if Puig, Kemp, and Alex Wood stay healthy, and produce like they are capable of, then we just got a heck of a lot better in the short term anyway. All those guys are FA at the end of 19, but seems management and ownership patience have ran out on rebuilding and waiting for prospects to figure things out.
All in all I think it was a great deal for us in the short term, because Gray and Downs arent anywhere near ready for the show, and we were able to get rid of Homer. I wish Homer the best, but with no better than Homer pitched last season, along with injuries, they couldnt afford waiting to see if Homer is able to bounce back after the injuries, and how poor he performed last season to go along with his contract.
Im surprised the Dodgers made this deal. Outside of Jeter Downs, and/or Josiah Gray, becoming HOF caliber players, Id say we definitely got the better of the deal. I do think both guys have a chance to be quality players, and I really like Jeter Downs, but Im tired of sucking while other teams who started rebuilding about the same time as we were, are now postseason teams, while were still losing 90+ games each yr.Everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread
The blockbuster between Los Angeles and Cincinnati sets up the Dodgers’ pursuit of Bryce Harper and the Reds’ commendable one-year contention experiment. But it cost us all Yasiel Puig in Dodger Blue.
Good breakdown. Paints this as a really good deal for Cincy: makes us remarkably solid this year while not committing to anything past this season. In fact, we can probably make back any prospect capital we gave away if the team tanks the season by dealing these guys mid year.

I really & honestly think this was a way to pave the way for the Dodgers to sign Bryce Harper. The Dodgers could have probably still done it without this big trade to the Reds but it did save them some money towards signing Harper if that's what it was done mostly for. That was my thinking as well, with why the Dodgers would trade the talent they did, for a couple prospects, and Homer, who they were going to release anyway, and they gave the Reds cash on top of the deal.
While it is likely a short term fix, to make a run at the postseason, and not a deal that makes us better now and in the future, depending on how good the team ends up being this yr, this has the possibility of being a great trade for us, even if it is just a 1 yr run, with those players being FA after this season.
I do think Josiah Gray, and Jeter Downs, have the talent to be good players in the future. But they havent did anything in the minors so far, that indicates they are close to being big league ready. So while none of us can predict the future, this was a great deal for the Reds.
Reports indicate that the Nats are making another run to keep Harper. If the Dodgers whiff on Harper, and got rid of players who were impact players for them, the Dodgers may have screwed themselves this season anyway. Which would make me very happy if that were to happen, as I was growing up a Reds fan, back when the Dodgers were are hated rivalEveryone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread
I dont know what kind of season we will have, but no Reds fan can say that the the ownership and the Front Office isnt trying to put together a club that can compete for the postseason this coming season.
I know Sonny Gray didnt pitch well for the Yankees, and has some durability issues as well, but maybe pairing him back with his college pitching coach, and a change of scenery will get him back on track. Because when he is right, he is a top of the rotation starter.
Starting pitching should definitely be improved. I still have faith in some of our young pitching prospects, that got ruffed up a bit like Tyler Mahle. Sal Romano, I think can be a effective arm out of the pen, or for that matter, I think Mahle could be a effective option out of the pen, if he doesnt make the rotation along with Sal.
Because barring injuries, Gray, Wood, Roark, Castillo, and Disco are the 5 starters, so those young arms, like Mahle, and Romano, will only be in the rotation due to a injury. But with Disco's injury issues every yr, and Alex Wood and Gray havent been overly durable in thier career's chances are there will likely be 1 or 2 who end up on the DL. Hopefully not, as I like our rotation if all are healthy, and the bullpen was solid last yr, considering how over worked they were due to poor starting pitching. Hopefully those like Hughes who were used often, doesnt come back to bite us this seasonEveryone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted- Luke14-11

So as of 15 minutes ago the Reds are the front runner to land JT Realmuto.
If nothing else this team is going to be fun to watch compared to the last couple of years.
And they will be much more fun to play a season on the Show with! lol
Seriously I love all the moves they have made so far and would love to see Realmuto behind the plate.
Reading all of the Realmuto talk on twitter, you would think Barnhart is Johnny Bench.
I like Tucker but he is a very average catcher, while Realmuto is one of the best catchers in the majors. Get it done Reds!!!ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment
