    Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread

You did seem a bit more optimistic then me, so this isn’t totally surprising of a start. This team seems kind of directionless... half in, but not good enough, and half out, but without a slew of big time prospects to be excited about 2-3 years down the line.

I’ll be seeing them tonight in Philadelphia so that’s cool. Be nice to score a run... maybe win a ballgame, who knows.

      Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread

We may lose 140 games and I am being serious.
      2-13???
Our pitching is just horrible and there is no one coming up this year that is going to help.
This team is jus set up for bad. Its time to clean house.
Time for Jockerty to go for sure and Price.
This isn't his fault, no manager could win with this team.
But word is the players don't respect him like they should and some of his lineups so far this year make no sense at all.
Go ahead and hire a young GM and let him bring in his own guy to manage.
I know Larkin is itching to manage the Reds for some reason but I don't want him at all!
Also lets go ahead and cut Pennington and Goslin and bring up the prospects now.
Bandino should be playing as well as Nick Senzel should be playing 3b everyday now.

I swear to you I know who the Reds GM is! lol
I have no idea why I type Jocketty????
Must be some sort of brain damage I have, I was just talking about him at work then I typed his name on here.
Of course I meant Dick Williams, dude has done nothing but made the team worse since he took over.

            Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread

I told my wife after yesterdays loss that I I figured come this morning we would find out that Price had been let go, but I guess he hasnt lost enough just yet, lol.
In all actuality this isnt the manager ot coaching staffs fault. After all they cant hit, pitch and field for them, and right now we suck at everything. Howevers its much easier to fire a manager and coaches than it is to change up the roster. So I do think a change is needed, even though Im not a fan of firing managers during the season, but something has to be done, and soon.

I dont think anyone including ownership and the FO were thinking postseason or bust for the team, but they were expecting to put a more competitive team on the field, and to start seeing progress. Instead of seeing some progress, it seems we have seen regression instead.

I figured our defense would take a hit, considering we loset BP last yr, and Cozart his yr, so obviously its going to be a downgrade up the middle, from what we had been accustomed too. Although I didnt think it would be quite this poor. Scooter while a good offensive player, isnt much defensively, and Peraza is a better on defense at 2nd than at ss.

Guys arent hitting, Votto has even been slow out of the gate, but Im sure he will eventually get going and be the Votto of old, so not worried about him.

I do think we will eventually start to hit, but the pitching has been a disappointment, that has surprised me, to some degree, granted some of it, is due to crappy defense, but Castillo has really struggled, and we were really expecting him to be the best starter.
Mahle will be fine, this kid will be a stud, Im not concerned, but he is young, he will take some lumps along the way, just got to be patient.

While Price doesnt deserve all the blame, sometimes, you just got to make a change. Plus he is the manager, and while he may not have made any in game decisions that has led to a loss, it is his responsibility along with the coaching staff to have the guys prepared, and when you have lost this many games to start the season, the manager does deserve some of the blame along with his coaching staff.

If I was Dick Williams, I would let Price and Mac Jenkins go. I was disappointed they didnt go out and get a better pitching coach this offseason. Im sure Mac is a nice guy, but the pitching has not been good, for a few seasons now, and while Mac hasnt always been the pitching coach during these past few yrs, once he became the main pitching coach the results never came.

I believe we got talented pitchers, they just need direction, and there just isnt enough progress, to continue on with the same pitching coach and manaer. After all Price is known for being a quality pitching coach, and while he may be the manager now, the pitching has got to have some reflection on him as well.

Personally if Im calling the shots, Pat Kelly is the guy I hire as manager. He has had some success in the minors, and I seen him managed quite a bit, and I like his style.
Thats who I would hire. My guess is when they decide to make the change, whenever that may be, I wouldnt be surprised if its not Barry Larkin. Larkin has shown some interest in managing, and he is a Reds guy. I like Larkin, but not sure how good a manager he would make.

Pat Kelly is my choice, for 2 reasons, one I have seen him manage quite a bit and I like how he does things. Also alot of these young players have played for him, so they know him.

IMO and maybe Im being bias, as a long time Reds fan, but I have watched a lot of these young kids grow up in the minors, we have more talent than our record indicates.
The season isnt completely lost yet, but contineu to wait, and the losses continue to mount, it will be a lost season here real soon. Not that I think were a postseason contender, even beofre the season, but we sure the heck should not be anywhere near this darn bad.
Plus they continue on losing without making a change at manager and shaking things up, will definitely effect ticket sales, as I believe it already has, considering as empty as the stands looked while the Cards were in town. Just seemed like there wasnt much of a crowd, for a Reds Cards game, and typically those games brings in the fans, especially this early in the season.

There’s nothing to be excited about with this team. That’s the worst feeling. It’s not even a team that’s a couple years away, it’s completely devoid of a direction as I mentioned a week ago. I wouldn’t show up to the ballpark regularly either.

Team needs to be completely blown up and restructured. Sooner then later. Holding on to anything we have isn’t worth it.

Those Votto rumors will swirl uncontrollably soon enough. Sucks, but he deserves better and I think it’s starting to catch up with him. He tried to stick it out but he’s not getting younger... go get a ring Joey.

I am not trying to be a jerk, but honestly I couldn’t disagree more with you on about everything you said above. Lol
Did you not read any of the preseaon predictions? Everyone of them had the Reds finishing last in the NLC and most of them had them losing 100 games.

I have no idea why you thought the pitching would be better!
Besides the closer, the pen is full of guys no one else wants at all. They are a bunch of cast offs.
As far as the starters go, I like Castillo a lot (I’m sure he will be the Yanks or Reds Sox #1 pitcher in about 5 years) but the rest of the starters have ever done anything that would make me think they would be better than they have been.

Same goes with the everyday position players, they have 4 guys that would or could start for 75% of the other MLB teams. Votto, Scooter, Barnhart, and Suarz. The rest of these guys are back ups at best.

Lastly heck no to replacing Price with Kelly, that would do nothing it would be the absolute same situation.
You might as well keep Price if you are going to replace him with Kelly.
Hire Larkin and give him a 5 year contract. It would bring excitement to the team and City and that is exactly what we need right now.
Also Larkin would not be afraid to call players out and that is what needs to happen right now.

                  Re: Official Cincinnati Reds Thread

I never said they would be a postseason team, but we should be seeing some improvement from the past few yrs. Which is what I was getting at. We seen to have regressed, not got better.

Obviously you dont watch MILB games, otherwise you would know Pat Kelly is a darn good manager. Price had no experience, Kelly has experince as a manager. Its harder to manage in the minors with players coming and going, and if you can win in the minors, you can win in the majors.

Tyler Mahle isnt some back end of the rotation at best pitcher, this kid will be a stud in time. The Bullpen looked a heck of a lot better on paper than it did last yr as did our starting rotation.
Jerad Hughes, isnt no has been pitcher, guy has been one of the msot underrated RP over the past few yrs. He was very solid for the Pirates, and wasnt bad for the Brewers last yr.
David Hernandez isnt some scrub either, but he does have a history of injury issues.

Also Amir Garrett should be a quality pitcher, and he has been pretty solid out of the pen so far. Why on earth Price had Reed start over Amir baffles me.
Iggy is a lockdown closer, and Wandy Peralta is a solid reliever as well.

Offensively this is basically the same lineup outside of Cozart, and if pitching hadnt sucked so bad, last yr our offense was good enough to be competitive. So you would have thought we would atleast be able to put some runs on the board this yr, and that hasnt happened.

This team should not be nearly as bad as it is. Losing Suarez has hurt, but I dont think our recored at this point would be too much different even if he was playing.

I like Larkin, but not sure if he would be a good manager. People bithced about Price not having any managing experience, well Larkin hasnt ever even been a coach, let alone a manager. Pat Kelly is a much safer bet than Larkin. Kelly also has managed some of these young kids we have, so he knows them.

My guess is if they fire Price, Riggleman will be the intern manager. Im a little surprised Price hasnt been fired with how bad we have been. Granted the manager and coaches cant hit, pitch and field for the players, but its much easier to fire managers and coaches than it is to get new players, lol. I just think with now going into the 5th season of struggling, a new voice is needed. Iv never been a big fan of firing managers during a season, but when you get off to this bad of start, and you have a manager who hasnt had any success as a manager, a change is necessary.

Yep, I was afraid this is what would happen, Riggleman would get the interim job. Yet they bring the guy up I said they should hire as manager in Pat Kelly, lol.
I lost respect for Riggleman when he walked on on his team when he was Nats manager, because he was upset at the FO and ownership over not getting a contract extension, and he didnt want to be a lame duck manager.
If a manager will walk out on his players and quit on them, then why would any player trust what he says when the going gets tough and he needs to rally them. He has shown he will quit on his team before, so not a guy I would want managing my team, especially not young players.

I know Riggleman said he regretted what he did, at Washington, and that he wish he had handled it differently. I dont think Riggleman is a bad manager, he had crap as Cubs manager to work with, and he was bringing a young Nats team along and they were improving, before he quit on them.

I liked Price, but the change was needed, he just happened to get his 1st shot at managing, with a team that was on the decline, as ownership and management were refusing to admit the window was closed. Price definitely didnt help himself any those 1st couple season, with some managing decisions, but he did improve as a manager, even if the wins dont show up. Price likely wont get another shot to manage, but Im sure he will end up as a pitching coach somewhere, which I believe is what he is best at anyway.

It would be great if Rigglemen gets them competitive, atleast, but only thing I worry about, is then them giving him the managers job, and I dont want Riggleman as manager. We seen it happen before a manger or coach get fired and a team starts to play better, then they give the manager or coach the full time job, and the next yr they suck, lol. Thats what worries me, as I dont want Riggleman as the new manager, interim is one thing, I can live with that, but not full time manager

The only way he is going to get the full time job or they remove the interim title is if he preforms some kind of miracle and makes this team way better.
If that happens he deserves to be the manager, period.
That's not going to happen as there just isn't enough talent on this team to compete with the Cubs, Brewers, or Cards.
I fully expect Larkin to be the manager on opening day next year.

LOL, Things will eventually get better for the Reds and us fans. It is definitely frustrating to watch them at times. Its extremely rare for me to not watch the Reds. Typically this time of yr, the only way I will miss a game, is if the Pacers are playing. Outside of that, I never miss a game, but I have been watching all the NBA playoff games, and havent watched the past 4 games. Its been yrs since I have missed that many Reds games. Heck Im not sure I have ever missed that many games in a row, lol. Typically this time of yr before I retired from farming, if I was in the fields planting I would have the Reds games on in the tractor.
We had a stretch of seasons before before Castellini group bought the team from Carl Linder when we were embarrassingly bad, and this team ranks right up there with those crappy teams. The thing is this team shouldnt be this poor. Outside of Cozart, this is basically the same offensive group, so you would have thought we wouldnt have gotten off to such a horrible start offensively. Now defensively, us where we really miss having Cozart, and when you this bad up the middle of your infield defensively its going to be a struggle, especially when your dealing with some young SP's, you have got to be solid defensively behind those young inexperienced pitchers.

Hopefully with these last 2 games, our offense has shown signs of life, and Suarez may not be too far off from coming back. While I wasnt expecting being able to compete for the Postseason this season, I definitely thought we would start to see progress in the rebuild this season.
While this season is already a complete waste, I do know better days are to come, even though it may not seem like it.

I guess this gives us a little feel of what it must be like to be a long time Cubs fan, when your in April, and your out of contention and already looking to next season
