How could you forget Lionel "L-Train" Simmons? One of the best games I have ever attended in person was in 86 when La Salle came to Richmond. Both teams combined for fewer than 10 TO's and was a wonderfully executed game by both sides. It was also Johnny Newman's, who was my favorite player growing up, last home game.

This is a P2K question but why don't they get better recruits right now? Are Philly kids that want to stay home and get overlooked by Villanova just more likely to go to Temple instead of La Salle? Sort of off topic, but can you imagine if Kimble and Gathers had stayed home and played with their buddy, Simmons, back in the late 80's instead of going to the west coast? What a monster team that would have been.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

Re: The Atlantic 10 Thread
You beat me to it. I was going to mention Lionel Simmons. At least he had Doug Overton playing with him. La Salle has usually just had one guy, like Carr, Townes, or Steve Smith, without much help. It would be nice to see them bounce back one of these seasons. They have a good coach.
LOL I didn't think you guys wanted me to go all the way back to the late '80s.

Philly kids just don't stay home. Plain and simple. Some New York heads on here said the same about kids from there. Nova has to go to New York, North Jersey and Maryland. St. Joseph's almost the same. They can get some players from the area that aren't as big time. Temple had the Simon Gratz HS pipeline (except Rasheed) and that well finally dried up.
Big-time players from here don't play here. It's that simple. Hopefully Fran Dunphy can get more players to stay by getting Temple back up there.

Re: The Atlantic 10 Thread
You're right. Hell, even X has two Philly kids on their team: Jason Love and Charles "Death Wish" Bronson.
Yeah and that one they didn't win was the best A-10 game I've seen so far. Didn't lose by much. Lost to a team a bit hotter than they are.Last edited by SlimKibbles; 02-04-2008, 12:00 AM.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

Re: The Atlantic 10 Thread
Charlotte hands Dayton a win tonight, Charlotte has played horrific basketball the last 5 minutes of their last two games.
The obvious pain on my part aside, it was a good win for Dayton, they are in a tough stretch but their only bad loss remains Richmond. A very big win for them, they need to run off a few in a row to get back to the top of the A10 standings and tonight was a great start. Coming back from 11 down late in the second half with two of their bigs fouled out and Brian Roberts going 30+ minutes into the game without scoring. The first 35 minutes go nothing like you planned but you still manage to come through in crunch time, the kind of game NCAA teams have to win a few times throughout the year.Comment

Re: The Atlantic 10 Thread
Don't know about Joe's but Temple had to travel to Richmond, where the Robins Center is a tough venue for visiting teams. Plus the Spiders are playing decent as of late, especially on the defensive side of the court. When you can go scoreless for 7:30+ and still never fall behind by more than 8, the D is doing something right. Really looking forward to see how the Spiders play down the stretch. Finishing strong would give a huge amount of confidence to all the young'ins heading into next season.S.O.S Crew

Re: The Atlantic 10 Thread
St. Joe's got beat because they ran into Duquesne playing their best game of the season. Same thing happened to Xavier last season when they played at the Palumbo Center. They just wouldn't miss. Last night the Dukes shot around 60% from the floor and made 78% of their 37 FT attempts. That's a good recipe for a loss no matter who you're playing. 9 times out of 10, the Hawks would handle them fine. Duquesne was just on fire last night, apparently.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

Charlotte over St. Bonnaventure, Duquesne over La Salle and GW over Dayton.
Bad loss for Dayton, they will need to make a run in the A10 tournament to be in a good position for an at-large bid, a win over Xavier would do them well too. Unbelievable they give GW their first win since since their A10 opener when they held St. Louis to 20 points.Comment

Re: The Atlantic 10 Thread
Not sure if you saw the box from that UD/GW game but GW took 42 shots the entire game. 28 of those shots were taken by only Rob Diggs and Wynton Witherspoon. Nobody else on GW had more than 5 points if I saw that right. Maureece Rice didn't even score! Just from the stats, that had to have been a rough game to watch. Diggs put on a nice performance though with 29 pts and 11 rebs.
Leemire Goldwire went for 39 @ St. Bonnaventure, there is some debate as to whether or not that is the all-time high scoring game by an opponant @ their gym. Nice way to break out of a terrible two game slump.Comment

Wow...with all the history St. Bona has with the opponents that have rolled through Olean during conference play, that would be an impressive achievement by Goldwire. Saw he scored a lot of points. Didn't he hit 8 3-pt shots?MLB: Cincinnati Reds

Re: The Atlantic 10 Thread
Yes, I think he was 8-13. Unfortunately, they needed every one of his 39, only a 4 point win vs. the Bonnies, but after two frustrating losses, I'll take it any way they can get it.Comment

Sunday scores...
Rhody-65, Fordham-63
Xavier-76, The Joe-72
Temple-80, UMass-70 (OT)
SLU-64, Richmond-55
P2K, the X/SJU game was a great one. Constant back and forth. All about momentum today. X continues to amaze me as far as learning how to win close games. They used to choke in games like this but they've really played well in tight games since losing that Tennessee game. I was getting so ticked about X leaving Ferguson open from beyond the arc. Even after making three or four 3's, they still would leave him open long enough to get a good shot off. Even if X would have lost, I still would have come away feeling like it was a great basketball game. I still can't believe X was a 10-point favorite this morning. I should have bet a crap-load of money on The Joe. No way in my mind this would ever be a 10-point victory for X, if they won at all. The game in Philly on 3/6 should be a great one. Not feeling good about X's chances at their place but they'll be very battle-tested on the road by that point after having played Charlotte, Rhody, and Dayton before that game.
EDIT: Phil Martelli's quote about XU's Stanley Burrell...
“Is there anybody here from the Xavier administration? Do you know when graduation is? That GD Burrell, every year, every GD game makes a shot against us. He was averaging 7.5 points coming into the game in seven league games – or eight games. Doesn’t look like the same player, playing great defense. Dagger. I want to be here to make sure that s.o.b. gets out of here to be honest with you.”Last edited by SlimKibbles; 02-10-2008, 08:36 PM.MLB: Cincinnati Reds
