    Re: The Atlantic 10 Thread

Xavier now actually has a recruit for this upcoming season. Signed a former Purdue commit, Jeff Robinson. PF 6'9" 205 from Lawrence North in Indianapolis. Rivals 3-star recruit. From what I've heard, he sounds like an underachiever. All the skills are there. Just a matter of his work ethic and desire to excel at the game. Anyway, he gives X more depth down low. They were going to be hurting having only 3 guys they could count on down there since Derrick Brown decided to go pro.

Per ESPN recruiting info that can't spell Musketeers:
    Former Purdue recruit picks Xavier

Power forward Jeff Robinson is expected to sign scholarship papers with Xavier later this week after being granted a release from his letter of intent to Purdue, according to the Indianapolis Star. Robinson signed with the Boilermakers in November but was denied admission to the school due to his grades.

Robinson is fully qualified by the NCAA and is waiting for admittance to Xavier.

"We're waiting to see and make sure all the academic stuff works out," Robinson told the paper.

If he enrolls, Robinson would be the first and only recruit for the Muskateers in the Class of 2009.

The only thing I don't understand about Jeff Robinson and his commitment to Xavier is that he was denied admission because of grades to get admitted into Purdue and I thought Xavier had higher academic standards than Purdue does. Maybe I am wrong about that though.

As for his play on the court I have also heard that he is an underachiever on the court and seems like the classroom as well. He didn't play much this season for Lawrence North and only averaged 3.5 points a game but, to be fair Lawrence North was stacked with decent big men. Seems like the potential is there if he can realize that and work towards improving the next couple years.

Xavier does have high academic standards and they want guys that will stay until they graduate. Most people might think that Derrick Brown left after his junior year. Well, he was a redshirt JR and graduated in May with two degrees. Anyway, that all said, I've heard conflicting things about Robinson and his grades' issues. Supposedly Purdue was waiting in November '08 on some scores from summer courses Robinson took but grew tired of waiting and found someone else they'd rather give the scholarship to? He was released of his commitment at that point. His grades must all be in order because I don't think X would have accepted him otherwise. I really don't know all of the details. I hope the Xavier coaches know what they are doing. I have faith. I don't think they would have gone after this kid if they didn't think he could beat out Andrew Taylor for 4th in line behind Jason Love, Kenny Frease, and Jamel McLean. Robinson will likely just be keeping a spot warm for Jordan Latham, who will be a freshman in 2010-11.

EDIT: Here's an article in the local paper about him. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/2...+power+forward

Also, I thought I'd mention this. Xavier has apparently signed a deal to become a Nike promo school in 2010-11. I guess that's the same kind of deal that Syracuse, Ohio State, and Florida, among others, have with Nike? People keep mentioning how people will be able to buy Xavier Nike gear in any sporting goods store in America, just like with those three schools? The uniforms could be interesting. They're getting new ones for this season but I guess it'll really kick into gear in 2010-11. It might be a nice recruiting tool. Hey, anything that helps I'm down with.

            Re: The Atlantic 10 Thread

From Pat Forde's "Red-hot College Basketball Rivalries" (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/colum...sportCat=ncb):

            6. Dayton-Xavier

Why It's Hot Now: Under Brian Gregory the Flyers have challenged the Musketeers' three-year reign atop the Atlantic 10, but haven't knocked them off. After Dayton won the first meeting last season, some of the Flyers jumped up on press row, a celebration that resonated with the X players. Before the second game, with the league title on the line, the two teams went chest-to-chest during warm-ups, a confrontation that worked against Dayton and in favor of Xavier, which easily beat the Flyers for the 24th straight time at home. The two campuses are about an hour apart, which means there are plenty of opportunities for the fans to taunt one another.

Upper Hand Today: This is Dayton's chance at a hostile takeover. Xavier lost a lot of talent and experience from last season's team, not to mention its coach, Sean Miller. The Flyers return a nucleus that could, for once, make them the team to beat in the A-10.

Upper Hand Historically: Dayton leads the all-time series 81-68, but Xavier has won 31 of the past 42 and seven of the past eight.

Rudy Flyer to D'Artagnan the Musketeer: Xavier, where coaches only rent and never buy.

D'Artagnan the Musketeer to Rudy Flyer: If you could beat us with any consistency, somebody might come after your coach, too.

Good ballplayer. Nice compliment to Jimmy Baron the last few years. Gets lots of steals. Beyond that, I couldn't give you a more detailed explanation. When I think of Rhody the last few years, Jimmy Baron and Kahiem Seawright cross my mind the most. Anyway, here's his page on Rhody's website...

I was trying to figure out who and the heck you were. No more Marino, huh?

Xavier has their MM either tomorrow night or Saturday. I'm sure you'll have fun at Charlotte's as a student.

That is a tough test to start the season. Hopefully they'll win...for the conference of course.

Xavier's first game is against Youngstown State tomorrow night. I'm actually planning to watch the Cincinnati-West Virginia football game at a bar somewhere instead of going to the game. It was a tough decision.

Make sure you post some stuff on the UD game at some point.

Notice who they all picked. I love it. The Musketeers can do their thing under the radar a bit. Let UD wear the bullseye this year and see if they can live up to expectations. XU was able to do it.
