McDermott having the same thing happen to him as Wyatt did for Temple. Having to do all the work on offense and not getting any help.

He's getting help from the refs now. If they are going to call a foul every time he establishes post position, then he'll free throw his way to victory.

In terms of strategy, I think coaches believe (and I'd agree with them on this) that they have a much better chance of stopping a team from scoring at the end of a tie game by playing straight defense than if they were to chance things and try to trap a player over 20+ feet away from the hoop where, as a result, any good college basketball team would be able to deliver the ball to the open man who was left by the trapper which in turn would lead to an unnecessarily easy basket to likely win the game.

Maybe we're just not seeing eye-to-eye on the goal of a defensive team at the end of a time game. For me, and most every coach in the entire nation, the goal is to get a stop. I think that's priority number 1, 2, 3, and 4. Doing anything that may lead to the other team scoring (randomly trapping) just to re-gain possession yourself (except now trailing) is likely at the bottom of any coach's to-do list.
How are you playing defense if you standing for 30 sec and the guys jacks up a 30ft 3 pointer and maybe it goes in?

The guy standing at the top is usually the best player im pretty sure the most coaches would agree to get the ball out of his hands and make someone else beat you.

The best Defenses are when the defense dictates to the offense not the other way around. Run a guy at them make them pass the ball make them show your their hand, especially if all 4 guys are standing outside the 3 pt line

Vic: No Kenny, that's girl versus girl.
        Kenny: What's the difference?
Vic: Well, in one, one girl wins. In the other....

The only thing I can say about these guys is that they call it on both ends, but too bad we'll see an NCAA tournament game decided by backups since every starting front court player will be fouled out.

They should really expand it to 6 fouls for the tourney

Is this Mc D's kid good enough to play at the next level or is he just good because his teamates mostly give him the ball? Never really seen creighton play

He hasn't done anything since his 4th to earn a 5th. That's why he's giving up layups on the defensive end.

Quite frankly, he's only committed 2 actual fouls and the rest were garbage. Same with every player that has 4+ fouls in this game... mostly off-ball, mostly routine defensive positioning or screening that's been called a foul every time in this game for some reason.

He'll be a spot up shooter at the next level. He doesn't have the quickness to guard the 3 and doesn't have the size or athleticism to guard the 4. That makes him a tweener and a role player.

I agree a coach would love for an opponent's best player to not have the ball with the game on the line. However, in many instances, accomplishing this feat is easier said than done. If a coach double teams at the top of the key as you suggest, suddenly, instead of forcing the tough, low percentage 30 footer you mentioned, all sorts of open alleys may reveal themselves when that great player is able to absorb that double team and properly react, finding the open player for an easy layup. Then we'd all be left wondering why in the world a defense decided to randomly try to trap 30 feet away from the hoop in the middle of the floor.

Dictating a game through defense is not as simple as just saying, "We're going to trap now, because we can." A team still has to be smart as to when they'd employ such a strategy and as I've maintained, I do not believe randomly doing so in the middle of the floor in a tie game is good strategy. There's a low percentage chance of forcing a turnover. Conversely, there's a high percentage chance of unnecessarily sending your defense scrambling, losing assignments and giving up an easy deuce. Then, instead of being in a tie ball game, that defense is now looking at a deficit with a limited amount of time on the clock.

It's admittedly a tough spot to be in. During a tie game with 30 seconds left, defenses are in fact in a little bit of a situation where they don't have many options aside from playing straight up for a stop. And I think most coaches just believe the chances of an offense hitting a buzzer beater against strong five-on-five defense is much lower than if that coach were to try to double team a single player and create a window for that offensive team to dive through.

I think there's a reason why desperate teams trailing by 8 with 1:30 remaining tend to get showtimed upon so often (like in the Gulf Coast-Georgetown game). Because those trailing teams are attempting to trap everywhere and hoping for that very, very small chance of success to come to fruition. Instead, what most often occurs is a defensive breakdown, as the offense finds the open man, who then requires help from the helper, which then leads to a big alley oop or dunk for the team already ahead.

Refs just let 10 seconds tick off the clock while Duke took their time passing the ball in.

Pretty awesome day of games, wish the Illini game had ended differently but I can't complain, Groce got more out of this years team than I expected and while I'll miss the seniors (yes they had some major flaws but still) I look forward to what the future brings starting with the 2013 class and if Groce can reel in some of the big fish he is in on in 2014 look out.

Illinois basketball is back thanks to John Groce.

The fouls in the Creighton/Duke game was ridiculous.
