Mike is doing a fine job. In fact, I think he's a better man for the job than I am.

With that said, I have an "insider's" knowledge on how these things work. I've been to the 2K offices, have spoken to many people in the company, and have 12 (!) years experience working on 2K's ratings.

Mike and everyone else that has ever worked on ratings for 2K do not have 100% creative control. Their hands are tied in various aspects. Dunking is one of those things.

For example, Derrick Rose and Kobe Bryant will always be better dunkers in game than they are in real life. That might as well be fact. 2K knows who their fans are. They are here to sell video games. Stars are exciting. Dunks are exciting. End of story. 36 year-old Vince Carter was still 75 dunk in 2K14.

My specific issue with the dunk ratings is poor scaling in relation to actual performance. Old-man Carter (who is still a better dunker than most) is mostly capable of the same stuff in-game as LeBron James.

2K14 Dunk ratings
90 LeBron (134 dunks, 10% of FGs)
84 Rose (32 dunks in his MVP 2011, 2% of FGs)
75 Carter (15 dunks, 2% of FGs)

This is just the tip of the iceberg. I am highlighting that the dunk ratings absolutely need revision given that they impact gameplay in such a major way. Given that Mike was a late addition to the development team it's "obvious" that he wouldn't have time to make sweeping changes to this league-wide problem, as that would require 2K Sports to actually recognize it as a problem. It's my "astute observation" that they don't. At least not yet.

Of course, the fact that I've spent the last 6 hours writing an article analyzing what I've seen in the video, causes, solutions, etc, yeah, you're right, sounds like I'm just an internet gremlin with a personal vendetta and no insight to contribute.

Difficulty affects the defense, but it doesn't affect the animations and their trigger points.

STG might be playing on Pro but he also isn't very good (in fact, he is terrible). A good player would still be able to trigger those animations against a quality defense.

I've dropped 51 points in 2K14 with Iman Shumpert (80 Dunk) in an Online Quick Match. It's widely known that anyone who can dunk is easy to score with. This has been the case for years and is getting highlighted by MyTeam. People will run with the likes of Robert Pack (98 dunk) who might as well be Westbrook.

Austin Rivers (77 dunk) is widely known to be a MyTeam superstar and Zach LaVine will have a better dunk rating. Shooting percentages are far from realistic in 2K because it's too easy to get dunks regardless of difficulty. There are many factors that go into this but the most controllable one is ratings.
