Re: #SimNation: Teach Me How Thread

I have several questions I would like answered, whether it's suggestions, tips, etc. Thanks in advance OS community.

How do you properly close out on a shooter? (Should I change my contest settings, i.e select intense-d, manual or always? When running towards a shooter, do I hold the right trigger along w the right stick towards him? or Should I hold the right trigger along w y and/or triangle button?)

The reason I ask, is because I would like to play discipline defense. Meaning, I don't want to jump for everything, but have an effective contest. From my experience thus far, hands-up is either delayed, ineffective, or non-responsive.

How do you properly contest a fade-away? My experience, is the fade-away is money for the CPU, regardless of whom is executing it(I don't mind Dirk Nowitzki or LaMarcus Aldridge, but I do have a problem w Dwight Howard performing, executing and dropping these like he's MJ or Kobe.

On defense, 2K from my observation, wants you to manually control the on ball screen, off ball screen, pin downs, etc. So for defensive settings, is it better for guards and wing players to change screen options from auto to whatever I desire, leave hedge alone(unless it's someone like James Harden, I might want to double off the screen, etc) use hedge settings when selecting on the bigs, so if I fail to control manually, the CPU is communicating properly between the bigs and guards/wings?

BTW, this is pertaining to all offline game modes against the CPU. Thanks again OS community.

This following video will help you on close outs extensively:

This video I talked about how to use the hedge and also showcased why "Hard Hedge" is ideal:

In Video 1 I also talked about an interesting aggressive defensive system, that one you can try at your own risk ^_^ I have recently developed a better system (check out video 2 for that). However; the close out fundamentals I talked about in there still holds true so check that out ^_^ I will be happy to answer any questions you have. Is always nice to talk sim defensive tactics ^_^

Remember the days we complained about stars not being stars? 2K heard us loud and clear on that one haha. Shutting down him and Lebron both in the same game is the toughest (and most enjoyable task) I've attempted this year in 2K. Even if I win its an escape.

          Good luck in the series.
I actually tried your advise on the defensive strategy and started mahimni at pf with hibbert to control the inside. I was able to limit kevin love and lebron and i just let kyrie be kyrie as long as we always contest his shots. What actually lost my focus is when lebron started to drive down the lane and we all tend to help on D, and mosgov does his series of putbacks. Then kyrie went on a shooting spree over oladipo and ghill, i even put sloan on him but failed. then on the offense the cpu adjusted with paul george on driving down the lane to which caused us the game hehe.

But basically they are the 1st seed so they are expected to win the game. Ill just try to readjust and put dwest back on the starting lineup and will let them love to the damage while ill try to take out kyrie on his game and lebron take jumpers ( PG can guard him well in 2k)

Hands up is ineffective during real NBA games also. Most NBA players jump to contest shots why don't people realize this

I hold turbo and use the right stick to contest, I usually only jump vs bigs but I have issues with playing good post defense. But for any mid range or three ball a right stick plus turbo/intense d hands up will do the trick. This could also be used with a triangle contest, hands up when he starts and then just jump when he releases the ball, might be a better contest... But as Jerseymade said if you are in position a manual right stick contest is just fine.

As far as screens go it depends on what you personally want to do, in my experience I can either read the screen and kill it completely by going over, or in the more typical case for me I remember my matchup and just do what I would tell the cpu to do (So if I go under a screen on a player I manually will try to go under, etc.) No one screen setting is the best though, it depends on what matchup you have. I have yet to understand ice though and try it out, but as far as I know ice defense is a pick and roll killer.

Run the pace offensive set. I just played a game vs saluteme757 and he has almost gotten that down to a science.

I'll upload the game to show off his work today.

Count me interested too.I'm trying to find a freelance offense for a team of players(myleague) that can shoot(3pt range), pass and dribble 1 through 4 and the 5 is able to knock down mid range and pass as well.So i figured either pace(probably) or swing motion offense.

Thanks Sam, enjoy your videos. I'm a little disappointed though (with myself), I must have overlooked this video and it would have come in handy...well, better now than never.

I agree with you, in your video, the defensive philosophy is not effective, if you don't play good on-ball defense.

Also, I notice, by setting tight pressure for off ball for the bigs, my bigs do a much better job at limiting their rebound success. I believe someone mention earlier in this thread regarding this and boy!, does it work.

Thanks shuuto12 for your suggestion. I have used this technique and the effectiveness is 50/50 or maybe less...(I, myself haven't perfected it but sometimes I will launch like a canon and and will be out of position. Great when the CPU misses the wide open jumper and I grab the rebound and outlet for a easy cherry picking score lol)

You're absolutely right, hands up is ineffective during real NBA games on the PERIMETER, yet hands up is effective during real NBA games while in the post if you have proper position.

My question I asked was how to properly executing a close out on shooters. For basketball, regardless if it's high school, collegiate or professional, you want to be disciplined when closing out, meaning run out towards the shooter to contest the shot, if he does shoot, but also to be able to get in a defensive stance and react if he either pump fakes and drives or drives against me by using my momentum against me. This is what I am trying to accomplish in 2K.

Does anybody have defensive settings suggestions that correlates with certain POE? Sam already suggested how he uses the Protect the Paint, Physical D with both on ball, off ball pressure set to tight. go under on screen, hard hedge and help on drive. I'll throw out some POE and would appreciate it if you can respond w defensive settings suggestions that work well together.

                          Limit Perimeter Shots
                          Physical D
Run in Transition and/or Crash Defensive Glass

                          Neutral Defensive Focus
                          Conservative? and/or Neutral Defensive Pressure
                          Some Run, Some Board

I have ? mark by conservative, because this appears worthless during my experience and wonder if anyone uses this POE setting?

                          Thanks again OS community.

This is my best defensive system:

I use this one when I am trying hard offline and online.
                            -Protect the paint
                            -Netural Defense
                            - Limit Transition

And Matchup Specific Defensive Settings. (See video for details)

For a 48 minute game, this has been the most effective and reliable system for me. I can use this all game. Vs HOF CPU I can hold teams to about 90 and under over 48 minutes. Online I can hold people around 30-40 over 20 minutes. This system is my favorite this year for 2K15.
