I actually feel like defending human players is relatively easy, but it is the HOF CPU that I sometimes struggle with. Trying beating the CPU 1v1 in Blacktop and pick a worse defender, it is very hard to win, to say the least. On the other hand I think it´s beneficial to practice in blacktop to improve your defense, although sometimes it seems that no matter what you do, the CPU is gonna score, especially on those contested layups. I highly recommend picking a mediocre defender like DRuss, or if you want a real challenge Jose Calderon, against players like Westbrook, Lowry (very good defender btw) or Gary Payton, who have both super strong defense and offense.

Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread
So, I have Suns on MyGM.
We were playing the Warriors and I thought the best chance we have is to set all players on "Off Ball Screen: Switch". I set Intensity to Tight (or Smother) on both On-Ball and Off-Ball to almost every player of the GSW.
And then the game started. And Curry used a screen, got wide open and made an easy three. Then Klay. Then KD. At will, just a screen and my defense is suddenly in panic. No-one is switching, players are just stuck behind screens fighting to follow their assigned player.
And I guess KD is a big guy, but if you are Bledsoe, you must be able to at least beat a screen for once. Even if I never asked you for this, Switch remember?
Even spamming the "Switch Everything" command did nothing.
I usually try to play games I am losing. Even if it goes very bad, I at least use these games to see how my bench players are doing, or try boosting a player's stats. This was one of the few moments I pressed the "get-me-out-of-here Sim the rest of the game" button.Comment

Originally posted by Lakers 24 7Defensive controls are slower, less responsive, clunkier, and more sluggish than they were last year. 2k8 still the best in terms of control. This could eventually be a series killer if it doesn't get addressed.Comment

Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread
So after another game where my coaching gameplan didnt seem to mean anything to the players (I did read in another thread that it resets to default *that's a MAJOR bug btw* ), I decided to just simulate the season just to see the new off season features.
One that stood out to me was the League Meeting where the owners decide on League and Game Changes. My owner asked for my opinion on 5 topics before attending, and while all 5 were a bit ridiculous (like eliminating Goaltending), I saw after advancing that they decided it's ok from now on if player salaries dont match during trades.
And they voted 28-2 for it, because why the **** not.Comment

Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread
It's not about the on ball defense. That part is fine and i love how they made it this year. The issue is the off ball D. It's breaks down too frequently. Even if i'm containing my man well, guys just lose their man for no reason. I can sit here and tell you exactly why guys are getting open, but i really don't feel like nitpicking (don't feel like writing a book lbs). This is a big issue with the game at least for me. If guys keep losing their man for no reason down the stretch or key moments in the game regardless of defensive setting, it makes for a very frustrating and unrealistic experience
Curiosity. Do you not play off-ball defense? Because that is a crucial part to playing solid defense with 2k17. If I don't play both on-ball and off-ball defense, the CPU will simply set up screens for outside shooters and rain shots all day. I have to constantly switch from on-ball to off-ball back to on-ball and back to off-ball on the same exact play. I must watch the entire field. I must take control of my off ball defender and fight around the CPU screens. It is a chess match where I do read and anticipate what the CPU defense is trying to do.
Can't rely solely on on-ball defense. That is not going to work on 2k17.
Loving the game. Can't get enough of it. There are some quirks but overall, a very addictive game.Comment

Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread
The CPU's on-ball defense isn't even fair. It's like they know where you're going before you even make a move.
I decided to mess with sliders. I turned way down "on ball defense", "lateral quickness" all even "body-up sensitivity", and nothing changes.
Last year when you messed with them you could tell the difference.Comment

Disclaimer: For 2k17, I only play user vs offline cpu, hall of fame default setting. Any other online, blacktop, myplayer mode and or modes where you are player locked, I wouldn't know.

I played blacktop to 50 against kyrie using D'Angelo Russell. I'm happy with how hard it was to defend kyrie. It was actually next to impossible, which is how it should be. I really loved that i had to give up something to take away something. He pretty much got the jumper whenever he felt like it. I still won though (barely by 3 points). Couldn't really drive past him so i posted him up. he started giving up the jumper, and with the way D'Angelo Russell is rated in this game that's a big no no. Thanks for putting me on to blacktop. It was actually really fun and a good way to improve user on ball DComment

Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread
Minus the ultra skinny players, the game looks, sounds, and plays great. I just wish Iguodala and Livingston would quit complaining about starting over Durant and Curry, respectively. Seems like 2K has yet to fix that in MyGM.Dubs, Niners, GiantsComment

Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread
Well just bought the game two days ago, played a little bit, I will say that I'm quite disappointed, as a whole thus far. Out the box game play seems way to fat, guys blowing by each other with no regard. I was on superstar and it just seems to unrealistic and hard for me, AI is making almost every shot and contested shots at that too. Graphics re still good, thought we see more of an update. Ill be playing NHL and MADDEN until some patches come out, maybe they should have released so early like they did.
Ill hold hope the patches make it better, but I;m not going to her this game is sim, cause I'm just not seeing it like past years this year. Its upsetting cause I have a been a huge 2K support since the dreamcast days.
Holding out hope, but as of now I'm not feeling the game too much.N.Y Mets

NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread
The defense in this game is broken, defenders get caught behind their own teammates and other players too often leaving players wide open on the perimeter, sometimes players will double team for nothing, sag off their players for no apparent reason, just a bunch of stupid defensive breakdowns. Think im going to put this game down until the first big patch, its too early for basketball anyway I'm still in football mode.
It's a good game but it wasn't ready for release. I recommend in the future they release the game in late October to allow for more development time and to coincide more the the NBA season.
It's not broken but it does need work especially defenders sagging off players in the paint i think players getting caught on offensive players could be possibly nerfed or fixed with a defensive swim move animation

Re: NBA 2K17 Impressions Thread
Positives
1.) AI look for the 3s more often. Like it or not it's part of the NBA now and should be a part of 2K. Glad its finally in the game. In a game I recently played the Warriors attempted over 30 threes.
2.) Controls feel much better this year, players don't feel as stiff as they did in previous 2ks, the movement is more fluid.
3.) the pace of the game, its feels faster than last year, it feels like I'm playing with athletes.
4.) fouling animations look more realistic, every foul does not look like a violent collision.
Negatives
1.) the CPU you're going up against still react way to fast to loose balls, deflections, etc but it doesn't seem like it is bad as it was in 2k16.
2.) the bad transition defense stated by previous posters. Sometimes the opposing team's center runs free to the basket without anyone on your team running back.
Sounds like they did what I feared: Put in shiny baubles for the casuals to want to play (dream team, Kobe stuff, expansion teams, etc.) and didn't improve defense, transition D, bigs running under the basket or picking up a ballhandler for no reason while there man runs to the basket, and in MyLeague contracts.
Sad. Unless I see some different feedback or info after patches, this may be the first year I don't buy 2k in years. Might go for Fifa, Madden or Hockey instead.Comment
