Re: NBA 2K18 Questions Thread: Hands-On Gameplay Aug 3rd
We tried this for a while but I didn't like it. It ended up feeling very arcade-ish. As soon as you saw a guy get hot, you had no choice but to go green hunting with him. It just didn't make sense to run your normal offense and get other guys looks when you knew there was somebody on the floor that had the potential for a green.
I think you guys will like how we re-worked the shot system this year. There are green releases, but how they work under the hood is completely different than 2K17 and much more manageable. Attributes/Badges and taking quality shots play a MUCH larger role in 2K18. For now you'll just have to take my word for it.
Looking forward to trying out the 2K18 green release system, and I still hope there'll be an option that only shows whether a shot is green after the shot has actually gone through the net. Out of curiosity, do you still feel philosophically in favor of phasing out green releases if possible, however slowly?Last edited by Sundown; 08-07-2017, 04:48 AM.Comment

Thanks Mike for chiming in. Cool to know it was tried, and too bad it lead to even gamey-er behavior than desired. Do you think that would still be the case if greens were rare even if a player was hot (but only available if he was)-- so that there would be a better balance between heat checks and running a normal offense? Then again, only a handful of players in the league would realistically take heat checks even if they're hot, and I can see the hot-green-hunting mechanic encouraging too much of the wrong thing across the board.

I think what Sundown is suggesting could be quite realistic - but the key would be finding the right way to implement (of course) - the right balance. And I can appreciate the risk if it's not quite right.
But to me, if someone drops back to back 3s IRL, more often than not, the next shot down the court is taken by that player - and this is a rare occurrence. Heat checks are real and to me, hunting for that green wouldn't be so horrible (if exclusive to when a player gets hot).
The key though, would be what happens if the green is missed (i.e; how fast the player "cools off" so to speak) and what exactly determines if a player is hot (which I would imagine would vary from player to player) to begin with.
But if greens would only apply when a player is hot, they would be hunting less. In some games, they may not even get a player hot at all. Perhaps it's a matter of re-defining what is deemed as "hot"?
That said, the system that's going into 2K18 sounds much improved. I personally will turn off meters, feedback etc. but I do enjoy the logic to this years system. I'm just one of the few who prefer leaving intricate systems like this happening behind the scenes (sort of an "ignorance is bliss" mentality).Comment

Re: NBA 2K18 Questions Thread: Hands-On Gameplay Aug 3rd
I'm super curious about shot contesting this year, in 2K17 they felt too effective. I could do "hands up" and post shots would go in probably 20% of the time. The success rate was probably the same re: contested jump-shots.
I'm all for contesting lowering "makes" over the course of a game, but should they be as effective as they are now? Guaranteed outcomes are not a good thing. Plays like a Ben Simmons jumper should be really low percentage when contested....JJ Redick? Not so much.Last edited by Kushmir; 08-07-2017, 06:53 AM.NOTE: Any and ALL of my suggestions are specifically and only related to Play Now Online.Comment

NBA 2K18 Questions Thread: Hands-On Gameplay Aug 3rd
I wish 2K will get rid of the auto contest. It would make defense based more on skill if users had to actually push up on the RS or press Y to jump. How it is currently, it's almost 0 reason to ever ever leave your feet to contest a shot or even worry about a player shooting on you while you're guarding him because the game will just auto contest.
I don't remember when auto-contest was placed in the game but if you go look at some old 2K11 footage, a lot of users used to leave their feet more to contest similar to how it is when watching real basketball. Maybe a bit more because in 2K11 because back then when holding the RS up, you couldn't really move around with your hands up. You was stuck in place. But it was much better and more realistic before auto-contest was implemented.
You can watch a few examples (25:30) in this old Crew vid to see some examples:
Smh. Mike must have changed his mind. Thought he was making 100% make greens when your player was hot or something. Don't like that players know a shot is 100% going in before it falls.

Exactly the whole body cylinder has to have an effect or not, as your example suggested Dirk jump over I.Thomas should have very little effect is on point as well as the distance between the shooter and defender should play a much natural scenario in that i mean in real life we don't see each and every contest(hands-up) plays like the same and not every defender makes a great effort to get closer to shooter, i mean each contest in 2k feels the same in a way defender gets an unnatural speed-recovery to contest better also closing out coming close to shooter so the game in that situations(which is frequent!) plays repetitive and offly-realistic.Last edited by ataman5; 08-07-2017, 08:20 AM.Comment

IMO its a late contest and should barely affect the shot but not everyone is a shooter...it might help cause a miss from someone like Justin Anderson who's not a good midrange shooter to begin with. The other thing it does is let us close the distance between the shooter so its not wide open--which is the main reason most people use block instead (which should never happen) I want to be able to draw fouls on people trying to block jump-shots in 2K18--but that can't happen until contests have better design.Last edited by Kushmir; 08-08-2017, 07:24 AM.NOTE: Any and ALL of my suggestions are specifically and only related to Play Now Online.Comment

It only contests now if you're pressing intense D, right? I just wish they would redo contesting in general to make it more intuitive and dynamic. Look at the running contest Delly gets below...why can't users get animations like that if we point the right stick at the shooter?

Right. And most people are just smashing the trigger the whole possession on D.
Yes. I am glad they are bringing back the manual draw foul. Was kind of disappointed when they added it and said it wouldn't be manual. But it'll rarely happen like you said because it's no point really at ALL to jump when you have auto-contest or could just run under someone (which should be a foul more). With me, I don't care if someone that's like a sharp shooter gets a shot off, long as I go into him and get that contest animation and I am good.

I was just thinking about this. I wish they would add animations for quick releases (which they had at some point in the past) and delayed, hanging releases, like the Jordan clip. Players don't always release jumpers with the same timing and might have to adjust based on defense and time on the clock.Comment

IMO the shot meter should have leeway based on how open a player is and their skill-set just like free throws...players (esp good shooters like Steph or Korver) shouldn't have to fill the meter up (especially if wide open) and like the video shows guys who are good mid-range shooters like Melo shouldn't be forced to have perfect timing for the ball to go in....now should bad timing go in less? Sure. But absolutes/guaranteed outcomes are terrible in sports games.
Its the same rationale with generating 50/50 foul/out-of-bounds violations when guys toe the line. Last year it had a guaranteed outcome and players abused it--now they're risking a turnover. PERFECT.
That's just good design.Last edited by Kushmir; 08-08-2017, 07:30 AM.NOTE: Any and ALL of my suggestions are specifically and only related to Play Now Online.Comment

Re: NBA 2K18 Questions Thread: Hands-On Gameplay Aug 3rd
As some rumours are going around I would like to ask this question...
Is the E-League replacing MyPark in 2K18?
If so, will there be at least a 2v2 or 3v3 queue?
Would be great if anybody could bring some light in the darkcheers
