I had the same problem at first man (I think everyone did). I would miss open opportunities and lanes because I would forget to hold LT to shoot.
What really solved the problem for me was putting in time in Practice mode. Training camp to learn the moves, and lots of time in Freestyle to practice shooting with LT + RS and building the muscle memory.
Also another thing that helped was using the shot button (X) in the beginning. Training camp actually teaches you the different shooting moves using the shot button instead of the shot stick. Its definitely easier to pull the moves off with buttons, so I used that mostly at first, but it just feels more like basketball and more fluid using the shot stick, so I forced myself to get used to the LT modifier in Freestyle.
I have to say, by now my brain is so trained that I use both the shot stick and shot button for different situations. Certain things are just easier with buttons...basically anything that involved a double tap of the R-stick to me doesn't feel very natural, so I will instead use B and X for those shots- hop shots, stepbacks, eurostep layup, hop layups, etc. I can never quite get the hang of double tapping the R-stick, I always seem to miss the second tap or something. I have been forcing myself to get used to it more lately, but it still feels weird.
Overall its a tradeoff. I felt much more in tune with shooting last year, things just felt like more of a natural extension of the brain last year with just using the R-stick in different directions. However I can't argue with how much dedicating the R-stick to dribble moves opens up the game. It really feels more natural and fluid. I guess it was a necessary change, but I still think shooting overall feels a little less natural this year.
