Re: Official NBA Live 10 Impressions Thread

I just had the most frustrating basketball experience since 2k9. I was playing with the Grizz against the Pistons and had a three point lead at the half. To start the third quarter Prince hits a three about five feet behind the arc with a man glued to him. I come down on the other end and miss a dunk. Then the Pistons proceed to shoot 90% for the second half, most of the shots heavily contested, while on my end of things I shot 11%. Yeah thats right, 11%. I was running plays, hitting the open man and while, at times, I did take a forced shot or two, I had guys missing open layups point blank. Both teams shot about 45-55% in the first half, nothing strange. I mean the second half was completely out of my control. I haven't EVER seen anything like it in a basketball game before. I really hope this is an isolated incident and not something that will become a problem. And for the record, my guys were all fresh.

One other major gripe that I had was pump fakes. I would constantly get a defender in the air only to have them morph in front of me when I had an open lane to the basket. They would seriously teleport from mid air to the floor right in front of me! It happened about five times in the last game I played. I still say this game is a bit better than 2k, but strangely enough, it shares many of 2k's problems. Oh well, I just had to get that out of my system so I wouldn't throw my controller.

aight so i RENTED the game to give it a shot with people raving about it.

i think it is improved yes but i dont think the game is for me i have both nba2k and live sititng here.

      i just like the feel of 2k more;

live the players play like really general shaq is pretty fast and thats kind of weird, also the collison stuff makes me mad in the paint like i have no clue what to expect when i go in the paint and the no posting button really stinks

i liked the crowd, the passing (awesome), the shots are pretty well made too. the rebounding animations are cool too like players tipping the ball to themselves.

i gotta give it to EA for making it much improved and i might buy both games next year.

      those are just my 2cents

I think Macca summed it up when he said all players are like Ben Wallace crossed with Scottie Pippen on D

Jokes aside, the CPU guys definitely recover wayyyyyyy to quickly after a pump fake.

I have been solely using Utah at the moment...maybe they are just good at rebounding, but the CPU are basically getting none against me.

I have USER def rebounding at 0.
I have CPU offensive rebounding at 100.

Last night I played Detroit...who got NONE in the whole game.

I also played the Cavs...who got TWO for the whole game.

Is it just because I am using the Jazz and playing half court ball with a big front line? Are you guys seeing many offensive rebounds by the CPU?
Seeing PLENTY. I'm playing with my Cavs, and teams are generally snagging 10-12 O-Reb per game against me. Orlando had 20 against me. Maybe I'm just terrible at rebounding.

Whew . . . I read through all the impressions before i wanted to post . . . now its my turn.

I was a sole 2K'er before this year, but that's changed. I enjoyed what the Live demo had to offer, so I plunged into the retail version.

I've read a lot of people's opinions on here and know there are some issues with different aspects of an otherwise solid game, but so far this game has very few WTF moments in it for me.

If I find some space and hit the J, I know the cause and effect relationship involved, and it's satisfying. If I manage to blow by a defender to the hole, I feel like I earned it. If you try to dribble into traffic, you'll get stripped. For me, if I feel that I earn every basket and every basket denial on defense, it is one of the most satisfying feelings in gaming.

Back in 2002, when 2K's first college basketball game came out, I remember that it was tough to score (I also remember their were jumpers that should have been layups). But when you actually scored, it made the game that much more rewarding, just like how I feel Live 10 has been for me.

I played a 12 min qrt games yesterday and the score at the end of the 1st qrt was 20-18 to the cpu. I never thought i'd see the day where I could have a 12 minute qrt play out so realistically and with such a low score without feeling cheated or like i had some unfair advantage over the cpu. Great job making the most sim hoops game ever made EA!!

The Nets are really fun to play with in live 10, i may have to run my dynasty with Harris and Co.

There are some issues (i often feel like i'm on rollerskates on defense) and the presentation needs a fair bit of work (if there is no stoppage in play towards the end of the game it just doesn't show who the player of the game is, that's fine in a close game but when it's a blow out there aren't many stoppages so it just gets missed. They should put it at the end of the game if they can't fit in into a dead ball situation) It's a superb game when it's all said and done.

I need to find a way to get more fouls for both teams.

Very interesting Will...good to hear bro

I am using Utah and I always set my team to half court / play a slow game. I guess with Okur, Boozer and AK47 on the front line it's hard for the CPU to get any ORB against me. I'll change my tempo and see how it goes. Will also play using some different teams. I am pretty sure I'll use the Jazz if I do start a season though (still debating between using LIVE or 2K for a season). The pick and pop / pick anr roll game is a lot of fun

Finally won my first game on all star using the sixers at home against the nets. I built a lead but they went on a run near the end of the game to take a 1 point lead but iguodala nailed a jumper with 30 seconds left to give me a lead I woulnt relinquish. All stats were spot on for a 10 minute quarter game except fouls. I need like 5 more per team to be happy.

Btw, iggy is a beast in this game. His shot is easy to time. I went 15-23 with 2-2 on 3s for 32 points.

I wasn't going to pick this up until at least the first patch was released, but changed my mind.

Boy am I glad I changed my mind. Wow.

The gameplay is amazing. It's so much more polished than the demo. I compare it to the demo cause I played it so often I got used to it. The player momentum seemed like it wasn't even in the demo. You can feel it big time in the retail and it makes a huge difference. Each player feels different. I'm not comparing it to euphoria, but with respect to the momentum alone it almost feels like GTA IV momentum, it's that good.

I don't feel the momentum has gotten enough press in the reviews I've seen. Now I understand what Da Czar was talking about in his Czarisode. This is huge in providing a realistic feel to the gameplay. The momentum makes trying to play on-ball defense actually fun instead of a bore or a chore. The direct passing works smooth now. The game in general is very smooth. It doesn't feel awkward and robotic as previous versions of Live.

The past 4+ years I just had no interest in playing the cpu in a NBA game. It wasn't fun no matter what slider adjustments were made. All this time I never realized the reason I didn't play offline was because I didn't enjoy the gameplay of the game I was playing. I don't even think I'll go online for a while cause I'm enjoying playing offline for the first time in a looooong time.

There are some things I'm not in love with early on, but I will give it time before I comment on them. Gameplay is the most important thing for me and I am impressed by Live 10. Kudos to EA for putting forth intelligent gameplay that stays true to the sport. The bells and whistles will come, but the foundation is most important.

And when a player drives follow him the whole way don't release the stick just because the animation kicked in. If you do what'll happen is the CPU will recognize the anim ended and then just keep moving.

Also when a guy comes in the paint and you put a body in front of him don't press Y (or triangle). Just let the guy run into you and the contact shot will kick in on its own.

Only use Y to defend jumpers and other stationary shots (e.g. hook shots, floaters etc.) because in the paint all it will do is cause you to jump straight up in the air.

I guarantee you if you play like this the CPU will score less in the paint. Just never give up on D until the shot has gone up and you have secured the board.
Just want to add to this great post that holding the RS up (hands up) usually kicks in a contest shot animation.

Once I started doing this in the demo, I had a lot less frustrating "I jumped at that guy all in his face and he wet the shot like no one was there" moments. It was one of the big adjustments for me from 2K since Y dynamically contests or tries the block in that game whereas in Live I think going for the block is a risk/reward thing.

I could be wrong but try it out and let me know.

I just picked up the game and have yet to open it, just wanted to read the last of the impressions.
