Re: Hate to say it but this game seems scripted

I get the feeling Live 10 just isn't meant to be played with slider sets. I tried using L4D's sliders and just didn't like the experience.

It's not like in the 2K series where you may tweak and customize the game to your liking, as there's DNA and all sorts of things going on under the hood, which greatly affects the way sliders work. Besides, all the problems that are being reported can't really be fixed by sliders anyway. They may be mitigated, but not fixed.

I'll just wait for the patch and try to play the game on default for the time being.

Some may just not care who hits what shots in whatever situation, so they cant identify. Either way, I think its been expressed enough that it should be viewed as a valid discussion..
And what about the people that feel like the right people do take the right shots in certain situations or can bait the CPU into doing it from their defense?

How do you make everyone happy when it comes to a sports videogame? Some complain about the contact in the paint on layups and such. I actually like it as you have to adjust when you drive, you can't just look to dunk over everyone or get a clean layup, but it's possible. Now what if they change it due to complaints of people. Now it's the other way around. Now the people that were complaining when it was more contact will be happy and on the hand I along with others who preferred the contact in the paint will be unsatified.

What I'm trying to say is as of now, I think it's very well possible to play good defense and get the players that you want to take the shots to take them, and to actually miss as well. Everyone was having problems with Bonner when they played the Spurs but he went 1/8 with me. I'll play some more games against the Spurs and test it out more. Other games he may hit some contested shots. It's not impossible. It can happen.

I'm also not down playing how everyone else who may be feeling the way you do feel. I'm just saying, I believe it's possible for it to be the way you and others would like as of now that's all. No disrespect to the opinions of you and others.

I've just had the most incredibly frustrating game against the Hornets. Everything was fine until the end of the 4th quarter, when the Basketball Mecha CPU switch got flipped. Their guards were out-rebounding Gasol and Bynum, and getting offensive boards as if they were juggling the ball. Consequently, I lost the game. It's not like I was playing badly earlier, because they only got as many off. rebounds as I did. The thing is that they got all of them at the very end of the game, when they needed to.

It's like clutch factor in 2K10, but there's no way to turn it off. It makes playing with strategy moot, because even if you do everything right, the CPU will find a way to win. It's infuriating when I lose because of stupid nonsense that shouldn't happen, and makes me want to toss my controller.

Man, I wish my replays werent messed so I can post vids from my last game....

I won by 15, but the shots Magloire, Quinn, and Haslem were hitting were ridiculous to keep it close...its not about losing man lol Haslem was slashing through the lane like Wade....players may run at different speeds, but their animation speeds are all the same.....maybe thats my beef...they hit so many contact animation layups man..I can see wade...But jeez..

i've played plenty of games, and i'm not seeing anything 'scripted' at all. how can it be scripted when YOU are controlling your offense and your defense? are the same things supposed to happen everytime down the floor? that would get pretty boring real quick. yeah the cpu is going to go on runs, hell, i go on plenty of runs myself, but isnt the realism of the NBA about teams going on 'runs'? i just don't think a video game in which a human being controls half of what happens during a game can be considered scripted.

Re: Hate to say it but this game seems scripted

              I got a few points:

              1. I think that what we are ignoring is that the developer's interpretation of what happens on a "run" isn't being accounted for. What I mean is it appears to me that there is a boost of some sort for which ever team is on the run (user or cpu) because I often hit shots I nornally can't when I am on a run. The developer's seem to have programed a run as one team getting hot and becoming "better" or unstoppable and the other team going cold and can't hit anything. Don't forget also there is a hidden tempo meter that goes up with certain triggers, which probably aren't exclusive to just hitting a few shots in a row. It could be something like getting a key stop that starts a run or many other things. With that said it's not very difficult to stop a CPU run. You just have to do something "key" that lowers there tempo meter, like getting the ball to your proven scorers in a high percentage area (not 20ft jumpers even with Ray Allen). I'm talking dunks, layups, short jumpers with your stars because you know even there success rating is lower when the other team is on a run.

              2. Also this is key, I've said it a bunch here on this forum, what most of us are calling contested shots aren't contested according to the games strict logic. I have an experiment for you: the next time you consider yourself contesting a shot but the opposing player hits anyway stop the game and look at replay; notice the position of your player the moment you hit the contest shot button. If you were directly in front of him then you were in the wrong place, LOL! Try sliding to the side where the shooter's shooting hand is and making sure your two feet are bracketing (on each side) his shooting hand. Also don't use "Y" or triangle in anyway to challenge the shot just push up on right analog stick. On fade away threes do this too it's important that you lining up with his release point not where he took off. This works on dunks and layups too. It's not important that you close out as much as you be in the right position. Your margin of error is the distance between your defenders two feet so as long as the ball is released and travels over this little gap while you push up on the right stick you are contesting the shot. When I see the shooter (human/cpu doesn't matter) starting his shot I line my self up properly then push up on the stick. It works best if you gap the shooter some so that by the time the ball reaches you overhead you've already pushed up on the stick. Funny thing is I often get blocks in post doing this. Now see how many "contested shots" go in for me it's near zero. Remember distance from the shooter is not critical but alignment is!

2.a. Now on the problem of switching and they shooting before you can react: that normally happens during "run time" try switching to 1-3-1 zone and not playing on ball D. I usually play the defender that on the line of 3 defenders that's closest to the 3 point line on the side of the court that the ball is on. I slump back to cover the man in the corner on that side as well as the quick dump down low now when the shooter shoots I let my AI teammates challenge the ones up top. If the ball is passed to a player on my side I am in position to challenge and no need to switch so I just do my challenge routine. If ball is dumped down low I move my man down there to help with double team but I don't switch to my center. This game is great with double team logic in my opinion, at least most of the time. Last if it's cross court I switch to the wing defender on that side and since it takes the pass a while to get there I can usually get in position to challenge effectively.

Using these two defensive techniques I usually can shut down the "unstoppable stuff" then I usually just get beat by sound basketball, LOL. Usually for me the CPU/humans stops forcing the wild stuff and go back to sound strategy I am 6-2 in my (Portland) dynasty and have been using the "2" technique all along and started using the "2a" part after I noticed CPU play while watching Da_Czar's video in his experiment thread. I really hope this helps you guys because I think this game is great, I just can't shoot worth a crap! I didn't want to get on and say "you were doing it wrong" as some guys are especially sensitive to that but I did want to be specific on what I was doing and how I have seen what you guys are mentioning but here's how I stop it. I think all the guys that say they don't see the runs or are effective stopping them don't go in enough detail as to why they don't have a problem. Remember also that with this gain nothing works all the time so you just have to be effective at slowing your opponent (CPU/human) down and efficient at scoring. I also like how no one player can stop any one other player but by utilizing your help and properly challenging shooters you can slow anyone down. Your AI teammates won't play D for you but they are very good at help D, so try taking away your check's strong side and making him drive into the help D and guys like Haslem and Bonner go back to rebounding and taking charges!

... hmm doesn't that happen in real basketball. Teams will go on dry spells and the other team goes on a run. It's called timeouts, use them when your team isn't executing or the other team is going on a run. I've found after timeouts I more often then not, things settle down. Players miss open shots a lot in the NBA, just because someone is open shouldn't mean its a guaranteed bucket (if anything that would be more scripted). Just play around with some of the sliders and know the playbook for the teams you play with. You really need to watch more live basketball games. Sometimes you just won't be able to stop a player when hes hot, it happens in real life, it happens in the game. Live 10 hasn't felt scripted from my experience.

Dude, I didn't want to quote your entire post but you are spot on. Even though it took me a while to figure out the cpu especially on their runs, with help and suggestions from guys on this site and specifically in this thread things have improved greatly for me.

Now if we can do something about the Vlad Radmanovic's of the league having crazy handles and the agility of Rudy Gay I'll be totally straight.

Thanks for that post, loadleft, I always suspected what you said about contesting. I will have test that out.

I think what has confused online also because defensive assist actually prevents you from properly contesting, but helps guard against the drive. I'm still trying to get used to that, assuming I'm correct.

This is annoying to me. I thought the point of DNA was to eliminate scrubs doing things they can't.

^^ I hope it helps and I'm glad to assist. If you start to contest shots like this let me know if you notice that your opponents off. rebounds go down. I initially had problems with too many easy put backs but Now I don't. My theory is that once I stopped using "Y" to contest I started staying in position to rebound vs. jumping out of position. Now most of my rebounds are gotten by simply walking towards where the ball is coming down vs. jumping at the rebound although when in a crowd I still have to jump.

I saw someone mention that we should sticky a HELPFUL TIPS thread and I agree. I bet if we all collaborated we'd fine that a lot of the issues we think are flaws in the game have to do with out technique vs what the developers programmed in the game to be the norm.

Can't dismiss this when it seems many of you are having this issue. Very interesting though, just reading through this thread. I LOVE OS, you guys are diehard just like me!

(I play only on Superstar in Live, always have, first thing I do with Live/2K every year is create a settings file with HOF/Superstar. All of my brothers/boys, it's like unbreakable tradition lol)

But for me personally, I've been playing with my boys H2H since copping 10/3 (gotta love NYC lol) and there certainly are runs and swings of momentum where Nash is a BEAST and can't miss. Then, there are times when I run plays for JR Smith and I have had him go 6-7 from 3 when he's got daylight. Then, some games where JR goes 2-6 from 3, and never really gets going all game. It can be the same game where Nash or whoever my boy is using (D.Will, Wade, Granger) is kinda cold too.

Actually, we've had games where Melo will absolutely go OFF, something like 15-23, 4-6 3PT and is hitting anything he gets a look at, and during the same game Granger is lighting me up (Can you tell I use the Nuggets a lot lol). Other games, Melo could be lighting it up and my opponent is cold all game. Vice versa, another game Melo never gets going, Billups goes like 8-17, and Granger (yeah, my dude likes the Pacers) will be like 9-20. To me so far it really feels dynamic and I just try to focus on getting good looks, and when Melo and em are sitting, this is when I really go to the playbook to use the clock and get a quality look until the stars come back in.

But head to head, this is the best time I've had with a bball game, ever, bar none.

In my Dynasty though, to me it feels like the same things apply, albeit with a few tweaks to my strategy. I'm 12-2, and when I played the OKC, I blew them out tip to finish, Melo Billups and JR all had big games and were sitting halfway through the 4th (the storyline before the game was "Easy Win For Denver?" lol). Versus MIA, yeah Wade had 31, 6, and 5, but I easily beat them by just shutting down the others. No big runs, maybe a few unbelievable shots by Beasly and Wade inside, but the game was never close.
But when I played the Lakers, Kobe shot horribly like 8-26 but Odom and Artest KILLED me. I was able to overcome a 9PT 4th qtr deficit to win at the buzzer with a Melo nice animation layup. No big runs, kinda back & forth all game with them in control, but JR and Melo heated up late. (I'll tell you one thing, if you master JR's release, they BETTER NOT give you a look from elbow extended, he's LIGHTS OUT).

I'll end this obnoxiously long post with some tips: Instead of pointing out how it feels scripted, let's try to figure out how to "interrupt" the script, so to speak. For example, when a run starts, maybe I'm at Staples and Kobe runs off a few 3's, followed by a Gasol dunk, I will immediately call TO and change something about my strategy. The key here is CHANGE SOMETHING. Maybe you were doubling Gasol in the block, had TMac on Kobe, change something. Whether it is throwing Battier on Kobe, and putting the tall TMac on Fish, putting DBL to YES on Kobe and switching tempo to "Halfcourt" if you had it on "Balanced." Maybe even switching from M2M to a 1-3-1. But again, CHANGE SOMETHING, give them a new look somewhere. I do this, and it works wonders in my Dynasty and against my boys/bros.
Because it makes them adjust something too, and that's the point. You can't allow them to keep up the run against what you were throwing at them previously. Try it.

One more thing, I'm a HUGE sliders guy (honed my skills on 2K9 lol) and I really feel I've got a good set that irons out many issues, and the thing is they are working great vs the CPU and H2H. I'm one to sit there and just do the whole "move a slider...play... move a slider... play... repeat" until they're right to me. Having tweaked the current set in awhile. PM me if you're interested.

Again, gotta say, I love this site.

                            Good advice Holliday.

No chance I ever play on superstar () but good advice.

Superstar cheats...Nuggets went on a run the other day & had Birdman hitting elbow jumpers on me.JR Smith & Billups hit every shot they took.

I actually think A LOT of this will alleviated by the upcoming patch. Beluba has said openly the turnaround jumpers the CPU are taking will be removed. These seem to occur mostly on runs.
