Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
Hi, this is a long one and I apologize up front.
I have found something that I think could benefit the understanding for those folks who have been frustrated with the recruiting algorithm in CH2K8.
I have seen plenty of other posts that rail against the seemingly uncontrollable nature of the recruiting part of the game, particularly when you and another school are the recruit's top candidates. I was ready to send another rant to the board when my team -MIZZOU- lost out on the overall #1 recruit (a SG from Missouri) going into my 12th season, while getting the #2 (a SF from Missouri). This was particularly frustrating for me as I had done everything to get them since their sophmore years.
Since I save each season, I decided to go back and see exactly what variables needed to change that would allow me to get the #1 guy.
Here are the constants: #1 overall guy (SG1) wants - 1. Good coaching. 2. To be wanted. 3. To go to a big program. His top 3 choices throughout the whole exercise are Michigan State, Mizzou, Vandy. Tom Izzo is rated A+, Vandy Coach and I am A-. Without doing anything other than the usual recruiting stuff I sink from 80% on SG1's list from his JR year to 76% in his SR year and am already behind Tom Izzo's recruiting efforts.
Scenario 1 - I note that MIST has one SR SG. I change my team makeup to match. Due to my original drop I figure that the variable PLAYING TIME is still part of the equation, even if it doesn't have the most weight. RESULT: I do not drop from first to second on SG1's list until 2nd or 3rd week.
Scenario 2 - Given that playing time is a weighted factor, but coaching skill is most heavily weighted (but also out of my control), perhaps if I changed Izzo's roster to have a bevy of SG's in front of SG1 I would stay competitive. I change MIST so that 3 PG's and 2 SFs become SG's - RESULT: I lead SG1's list until the very last week of recruiting where Izzo wins again.
Scenario 3 - Given the above 2 learnings I go back to MIST and change an additional 2 players to SG's giving the lucky Tom Izzo 8 SG's to choose from. RESULT: MIST drops from SG1's radar like they were wearing concrete slippers and MIZZOU gets the top two prospects in the country who happen to be from Missouri.
Yes it's not in the "spirit" of the game, and of course MIST rosters were returned to normal, but now that I understand more about the weighting of the different variables, (i.e. that SG1 felt that A+ coaching is 9 spots in the roster chain more valuable than A- coaching) I know I will not suffer extreme frustration next time the "unexplainable" recruiting loss happens.

That is a good study.
Now if I could do something about Memphis signing all 4 PG's I have as targets and offered, even though I'm rolling with Kansas, maybe I'll be able to figure out this recruiting after all.Comment

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
Been saying the same thing for a long time, I did the same test with Stanley Robinson on UConn and changing his position from a SF to an PF. He is the only SF on UConn's roster, despite that when I started a legacy I'd get a few 4-star SF's interested but not the elite AA's.
I changed quit that legacy, moved Robinson's position to PF (so I had no SF's on the roster), started a new legacy and I had every top SF in the country wanting to come to my school.
I signed the #1 and #3 SF's in that scenario. I think I signed #7 and #25 in the first scenario."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

What I am getting from the recruiting studies is to get the top AA kids, you need to not have any from their position on your team.
So how do we get around that? Alternate years with switching all guys position to PG and SM, and then the following year to SG and PF?
Also, anyway to cheese in recruiting that anyone found out? I would love just once of running a dynasty with a team like memphis and actually getting some of the best kids on a yearly basis.Comment

hazey, from what I have been able to find, the game has a lot of glitches but is basically "cheese-free". My whole goal has been to build a program that can get top recruits almost at will and send them to the pros. Things that have worked for me in CH2K8 is:
1. Longevity and establishing a winning program. The more often you're in the sweet sixteen the more likely a freshman or sophomore will dream of playing for you. Corrollary: Power conferences get the best players.
2. High coaching stats. The best recruits care about playing time and seem to care about getting coached up. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that player ability ratings (not actual player game stats) determine draft status, and good coaching accelerates development.
3. You have to start on them early and consistently contact them from JR year on otherwise you're gonna lose to the powerhouses. This is true unless you are their "natural" number one choice due to location or something like that.
For instance, when I was a "B" rated coach in my 2nd year with a major program, I created a 3 star FR point guard in my backyard and couldn't pull him in. Did it again with a SR the next season and put him overseas and still couldn't get him.
Now as an "A" rated coach with almost 10 straight years of "sweet sixteen's" or better with the same team, I created the Micheal Jordan of college players and put him in Argentina and got him (btw-doing this gives you a slight edge in timing since it takes good recruiting schools a week or two to find him plus they might have allocated all of their scholarships elsewhere).
Using the above points, I can now easily pull two 5 star players a year and my starting five and a few bench players are 5 stars. Those players without 5 stars were recruited because of some special statistical item I needed (high assists/turnover ratio, defense and rebounding, etc).Last edited by asanders28; 02-04-2009, 11:16 AM.Comment

That's a great post asanders thanks. I'm going to focus on those points. Normally I wouldn't play any game cheesing, just take it for what it is and work around it, but the recruiting in this game has been struggling. Never did even think about creating prospects though I'm definitely trying that too.Comment

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
Does anyone have any advice on how to progress the quickest as a coach when it comes to getting into a power conference? Im at Niagara right now in like 10 year or so. Event though I dominate the conference continually and get like 25 wins a year, I rarely get offers from any schools that would be considered a step up. It seems as though by the time my coach is good enough to coach at those elite schools, I have like 5 years left in career(I sim a lot).Comment

Koshi, how do you feel about the post/perimeter playbooks for the CPU vs the balanced one you made? I feel like it's a little too much all-or-nothing using the post playbook when it comes to the CPU guards. I'd like to get a little more balance from the CPU, so naturally the 'balanced' playbook seems like it'd be the answer!"You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Does anyone know what exactly scouting does for the coaching attribute?
Anyone know if a higher grade for scouting under coaching means
a)they scout more players?
b)they give you reports on more categories?
c)the reports they give are more accurate?
In my closed legacy mode I'm not sure how much emphasis I should put on coaching when I'm progressing my coach. When I look for targets, I look exclusively for guys that fit my priorities, not just star ranking or anything like that.Comment

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
I don't understand the custom playbooks. I tried to put one of his playbooks together, but his playbook had 20 plays in it and where I looked it only let me put in 8 plays. I could find his plays, I just couldn't find where you could put in another 12 plays.
I've never messed around with the playbooks, and I was completely confused on how to try and create a playbook.Comment
