Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)

CAn anyone mainly briefly explain what the different types of playbooks are good for in this game?

    1. Motion
    2. Box
    3. 4-Out
    4. Flex
    5. UCLA High Post
    6. Princeton
    7. Stack

I went through most of the higher profile teams, and they all use the same playbook "motion". I'm assuming motion is what you want to use when you have great players?

There really isn't a single great playbook, they all have so-so or crappy plays that you don't need. Find Koshi's playbooks a few pages back and use those.

I don't use them. I use the balanced one, along with another balanced one I created. I really shouldn't have even posted those, they each only have twelve plays. I recommend adding plays to each to make them balanced. The CPU does a good job of finding playmakers, and besides twelve plays doesn't give you a lot of variety.

It's explained in this thread, and yes it's a bit confusing: LINK.

Custom playbook are easily the best way to go about things, for both user and cpu: LINK. Here are plays that work well in custom playbooks: LINK (the post right below that one also lists some "hidden" plays that work well too).

Custom playbooks might seem confusing at first, but it's well worth it to take the time to learn how to create and make use of them.

Well this isn't really a tip or information, but I just thought I'd throw this out there.

I typically play my games on All-American because I still get a good challenge from it, but when March Madness rolls around, I go to MOP for the tournament. It helps emulate just how intense the NCAAs are and how everyone brings their A game night in and night out, and just makes it that much more special.

How do you determine who sets the pick on the pick and roll? My center was doing it the whole season, but the last game my PF started to set them instead. I'd like to know how to change it back to my center if possible.

I don't know, I always assumed the C/PF with the highest offensive awareness rating, or low post awareness rating did the pick and roll, but I could be wrong.

I have a question for you guys. When I am in man to man defense, and the CPU sets a good pick, is there a way to tell my teammate to switch?

Too often my teammate gets picked, so I pick up the ball handler. Then when my teammate gets his bearings, he waddles over leaving the other opponent wide open.

From what I've seen, the big man who sets the pick is the one on the same side of the floor as the ballhandler. For example, if your guard is on the right side of the floor, and so is the center, the center will set the pick. If both the C and PF are on the same side of the floor, I'd guess the one closest to the ballhandler will set the pick.

If you definitely want to know what player will be setting the pick, use the control scheme where you can use the dual player controls - ie use the bumper and select the right player for the job.

Hey i just got the game and am new to the series and i'm trying to find out what are these player attributes CONS, SHOR or SHDR (sometimes O and D look alike on the menu) SHTR, DUNKST (there is already a Dunk rating). IF anyone could let me know i would be thankful.

                      CONS - consistency
SHDR - shooting off the dribble

                          1. Longevity and establishing a winning program. The more often you're in the sweet sixteen the more likely a freshman or sophomore will dream of playing for you. Corrollary: Power conferences get the best players.

                          2. High coaching stats. The best recruits care about playing time and seem to care about getting coached up. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that player ability ratings (not actual player game stats) determine draft status, and good coaching accelerates development.

                          3. You have to start on them early and consistently contact them from JR year on otherwise you're gonna lose to the powerhouses. This is true unless you are their "natural" number one choice due to location or something like that.

For instance, when I was a "B" rated coach in my 2nd year with a major program, I created a 3 star FR point guard in my backyard and couldn't pull him in. Did it again with a SR the next season and put him overseas and still couldn't get him.

Now as an "A" rated coach with almost 10 straight years of "sweet sixteen's" or better with the same team, I created the Micheal Jordan of college players and put him in Argentina and got him (btw-doing this gives you a slight edge in timing since it takes good recruiting schools a week or two to find him plus they might have allocated all of their scholarships elsewhere).

Using the above points, I can now easily pull two 5 star players a year and my starting five and a few bench players are 5 stars. Those players without 5 stars were recruited because of some special statistical item I needed (high assists/turnover ratio, defense and rebounding, etc).
Something I've noticed along these lines . . . the more isolated a program is, the more likely you are to get local talent. With a Hawai'i legacy, I rarely, if ever, miss out on the great locals.

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)

Some miscellanea I haven't seen covered:

With direct passing, you can move players as you pass by holding the L-stick in the desired direction. For example, if I want my SG to cut to the hoop from the right side, I hold left while hitting B. If I want him to come to the ball, I pull towards the ballhandler; if I want him to pop outside, I push left. For pick and rolls, holding towards the hoop gives a nice lead pass past the defender.

When I mess around with O-Awareness and ball-handling, I occasionally have the ball go through the roller's hands on pick and rolls . . . sometimes it goes out of bounds, sometimes it's a steal . . . I run a pick-heavy offense and I see it one or two times a game. Seems to be dependent on the receiving player's OA and the passer's pass rating. It looks very realistic on some of those hard passes into the lane, and it gives me a few more turnovers a game.

Player Lock rules. I was playing my Bowling Green legacy because I have three amazing players (like a 7'3" center with 80 speed ), but the MAC is so weak I got bored with it. I went back and was playing about with different things to try to rekindle some interest and make it to the NCAAs. For me, player lock made the games more tolerable - it feels like the games flow a little more naturally.

Also . . . anyone have a player average a triple double for the season? I have a 6'9" SF who's leading the nation in rebounding and assists (and *cough* turnovers *cough*) with 12 & 8.5 a game.

You're allowed 12 scholarships annually, you only have two available because you only have two seniors graduating which obviously means you have two spots to fill. If you have a senior class with five graduating then you will have five scholarships to give out and so on and so forth.

Also, you can chose to use less than the allotted 12 and those will carry into the following season. For example, if it's late in the post season recruiting session and you're fighting it out for a 3-star recruit but he signs elsewhere and all you can get besides him is a 1-star guy then you can chose not to offer that boat and you'll have it at the start of next season to offer.
