Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
Wow I'm glad I found and read this entire thread. With no games to occupy my time right now, I started playing my CH2k8 and fell in love with it again! Thanks to all that contributed.
There was one guy that said something about to how to re-rate 3pt shooters...here's a simple formula I use that seems to be pretty good for default sliders when it comes to FG%, FT%, and 3pt% (within reason). I use these guidelines when editing/creating players. Game mechanics and volume shooting tends to skew numbers however, so tweaking is always needed. By all means don't follow this to exact, but it provides a good base to build from.
As a case example, I'll use statistics to create shooting stats for an All-American from my alma mater: Kyle Korver, CU forward circa 2003.
FT= Player's real FT%
Usually pretty good straight up determination of rating. KK was a .908 FT shooter. Hence, I would make his FT rating91 rounding up
FG= FG% x 2
Now this is tough, because you have to look a little more in depth on where the player takes the majority of shots. For C or PFs, I use this as their close rating. For PGs, SGs, and SFs I'll use this as the mid-range rating.
KK was essentially a SF playing the 4. He shot .468, that amounts to a mid rating of about 94. However, like I said stats skew. 2/3 of his shots were 3s, so I would tweak about 5-6 points down considering this.
Now the next stat can get really tricky and iffy depending on # of attempts, attempts of 3pt shots compared to others, # made, type of offense, open vs. contested, etc. But I found this formula is pretty good.
x=60-players real percentage, so
(100-x)+(1 for every 5 3pt FGM over 100(
For example, Korver again:
3pt % was .480 3pt FGM/FGA 129/269
This would give us 60-48=12. 100-12= 88 base rating. However, with 29 makes over 100 (don't round up on this one) gives an additional +5 for a final rating of 93. Pretty fair considering KK was one of the best statistical shooters in NCAA history.
I think it's unrealistic to ever have like a 99 3pt shooter, that would be like Ray Allen on fire in NBA Jam or something. Plus any CPU player that is WIDE open will be an excellent 3pt shooter with anything higher than 75 rating from my experience.
But look at Steph Curry from 08-09:
3pt% was .387 3pt FGM/FGA 130/336
So we get 60-39= 21. 100-21=79 base rating, and +6 for having 130 makes. Final rating is 85, which seems pretty close.
Now most people would put him in the 90+ range also. That's why you have to compensate for volume shooting, playstyles, etc. like I said. Korver played on a team that ran multiple pick and pops, double/triple screens, etc for him to get him open. He was a spot up shooter. Curry took ridiculous shots, contested, quick, deep, and his team's entire offense ran through him. That's where you could tweak stats like Shoot Off Dribble, Shoot in Traffic, Quickness, Tendencies. Watch what the CPU could two with terrific long-ranger bombers that had slightly different skill sets
If you gave Curry ridiculous SHOD of like 95 and pretty generous quickness, you would see a CPU PG that could get off a 3 anywhere. A CPU Korver-like player would be a player that could shoot with designed plays and would punish zones.aka MegaHuskerComment

Yeah, I keep trying to build my ultimate team around 2-3 zones but I swear every time I turn around the other team just starts nailing three after three in my face no matter how good they really are. I definitely agree the defense doesn't seem to move quick enough in 2-3 zones. Usually someone ends up open to drop a three in your face.YOU DON"T WANT TO GO TO WAAAR WITH THE RAAAMS!! I like to run a 2-3, 2-3 match-up, man as my 3 sets. It seems to work. I also max out the 4 game play sliders (Tempo, Crash Boards, Pressure, & Fast Break) to 100. I play on default All-American. It all works well for me. I also press now and then but only control my center. Good 3pt shooting teams will always hit 3's while other will make a few but not kill me.Relax, it's just a video game!Comment

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
Well I just picked this up this week. Only had a PS3 for 6 months or so, and watching March Madness made me long to play some college hoops myself. Sure this feels like a step back from NBA 2k11 in a lot of areas, but it still feels like a very solid game.
And the little touches like crowd chants, momentum, points of emphasis and so on give it some nice differences that I still can appreciate even now.
Managed to find the 2010-11 rosters in another thread here on 2kshare. But after reading this entire threadI wanted to look for the balanced playbooks that spit_bubble mentions over 2 years ago, but I don't see them on 2kshare. Can anyone else on PS3 re-upload those?
EDIT: I recreated the CPU Balanced playbook from post 51, and uploaded it as OS CPU Balanced, if anyone else is interested. Might redo the others as well, but just trying that one for now and I like the way the CPU is playing so far.
Thanks for all the great info compiled into this thread. Looking forward to playing a few tournaments and hopefully a few seasons as well. I'm sure I can take my Cardinals farther than they went this year.Comment

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
Any tips on free throw rebounding? I thought it was L2 button to block out on rebounds, and my player seems to be trying to do that. But I've played about 8-9 games this weekend and every single time the cpu misses a free throw they get the rebound. Every time, without fail. The first 3-4 times it happened I was controlling my C or PF and thought I must have mistimed the jump or not blocked out well enough. But the last several times I have been controlling the SF just trying to go in and help the two big guys get it and it's still not working.
I suppose I could be having an enormous streak of bad luck but jeez, an offensive rebound on a FT should only happen rarely, when the ball bounces funny. Most of the time the defense should have inside position and get it clean. All the free throws I have missed in those 8 games I have only gotten 1. That seems more in line.
Makes it really impossible to come back from down 4-6 points in the last couple minutes because even when they miss FTs I just have to foul them again. Should I just totally stay out of the paint and control my PG and let the AI rebound for me? Or is this not really a problem and I'm just having bad luck?Comment

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
I edited out the play "PF Pop Clear (Box)" for the SG because the play mostly results in a shot for the PG, and not a very realistic one at that.
Also, I uploaded four playbooks to 2K Share (Playstation 3) if anyone is interested:
1. Hoya High Post - A balanced playbook featuring plays where big men come to the high post area.
2. Carolina - A balanced playbook featuring isolation plays.
3. Yellow Jacket - A balanced playbook featuring plays for 3pt shooters.
4. Heathcote - A balanced playbook featuring low post plays.

L2 is the blockout button but it is very tough to block on free throws for whatever reason. What I do is take the SF and just go for the rebound without boxing anyone out. You just have to read where the ball is going to bounce and go after it.“If you’re true to yourself, you’re going to be true to everyone else.”Comment

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
my rebounding sliders are: off: 0
def: 20
for both CPU/Human
gives me GREAT rebounding stats for the 18 minute halves i play on. i control my small forward on free throws.
has anyone found a way to even out CPU/Human turnovers? and free throw attempts?Comment

What controller setup do you use? I like B, even though the button configuration doesn't match. Might be a ps3 thing but it shows isomotion as triangle and hop step as circle, which is flipped when you actually play. I tried some more and it seems my guys will still box out without using L2, same thing with creating contact in the post trying to deny ball.Wolverines Wings Same Old Lions Tigers Pistons Erika ChristensenComment

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
What are you all's strategy for defending 3 pointers from the wings. My defenders get out of position all the time and players tend to break free. I've had plenty of teams take more 3s than 2 point field goals exploiting the wings.
This started using 2-3 and 1-1-3 zone. I switched to man to man trying to play tight on the perimeter shooters...they still broke free. Should I have used something like a 1-3-1 or 2-1-2 zone? Is it just because I'm starting on a closed legacy and my players are just crappy and end up out of position?
Thanks.Comment

I use the 1-3-1 with my Baylor team and it has proven to be very successful this season (year 3 with the newest rosters this year). I tend to pick my SG or SF when the ball is on their side. It helps with closing out on the wings. I pick my PG when it comes to the middle but you have to be careful for the SG or SF on the opposing team getting on the baseline corner. They will shoot if you don't slide all the way out to cover them. I love it. I've finally got my guys playing great ball. I switch from this to man because my team is finally good enough to actually play man.They call me "The Manual"Comment
