Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)

how do you keep a guy from backing you down on the PS2 version? I cant stop anyone down low! Well, right now, I am playing with Colorado, though.

You can never get an open shot on this version either... nor pass across court. Is there an alley oop on the ps2 version?

What I do is push back against the offensive player ... I also hold down R1 while on defense, and it seems to help to make your guy "more aggressive" to push back against the offensive player. If you do this, it can help you push them back out of the post. I'm not sure if the R1 is required, but it seems to work for me.

You can get open shots ... use the lead pass tips posted earlier. If you use pick-n-roll, defenders will sag off to stop the drive and/or assist, and you can use these gaps to find open guys on the perimeter. Just remember that you can always lead the pass. Also, there are some plays that do not work that well, but earlier in this thread, plays that work well are posted, so you can look at those.

      ... nor pass across court.
You can pass across court. Use the L1 + O, and you get a lobbing type of pass, or you can do the passing where you choose the recipient of the pass, I forget the name of it, but then you have to watch out for interceptors.

Is there an alley oop on the ps2 version?
Yes, it's the same lob pass.

If I have the buttons wrong, forgive me. I was playing 2K8, but switched to 2K7 a couple weeks ago. As I'm on PS2, I'm not sure I can find any big differences between the two, except that I can see that 2K7 has in-game manual, and I don't think 2K8 has that.

        Thanks, instant000!

I never thought about using the lead pass feature. I do, however, use icon passing, where you can see the icons above all the players heads before passing. I think its L2. The L1 button +O X triangle or square is 'maximum passing, i think you were referring to.

I agree, the biggest turn off for CH2k8. I always try to get back into this game because how deep legacy is and great presentation is plus I love college basketball. But the fact my players just stand around or move the same way every possession gets old quick. I played this game a lot but now I just can't get into it anymore.

^ Yeah, it's pretty sad. It's the only glaring element of the gameplay that irks the hell out of me.

The only way around it is to use a run-n-gun offense and try to stay out of half court sets as much as possible. The game is still a lot of fun if you use an up tempo team and have a couple of shooters. Running a 7-second-or-less offense is still a good time in 2K8.

Slow it down and try to out-execute a team? Yuck, can't do it anymore.

That's what I resorted to doing, because the half-court offense in 2k8 is just stale. I noticed after a few games my players were all moving the same and pretty much doing nothing. I have no idea how this was done so poorly, in an otherwise perfect basketball game. Running a half-court offense got boring fast and tested my patience.

Oh well CH is still fun to play every once in awhile and come basketball season I will continue my legacy not sure how far I'll get though.

This is why I have had the game almost two months now and failed to complete one season of legacy. The players dont move well on offense and even when you try to execute a play the CPU picks off most of your passes. I love the recruiting in legacy just like i do when I play NCAA football, but I only pick this game up once a week or every two weeks cause it is just hard for me to get into.

i run plays all the time and players RARELY if EVER pick off my passes, actually it happens too little i think because my turnovers are always wayyyyyyyyyyyyy lower than those in simmed games... you know you can make players move by pushing the stick in a direction when you pass right?

oh and players just standing around has to do with a poor team chemistry

No, it has to do with with the game itself. You can play in exhibition or have chemistry turned off or have high team chemistry like my team and you will see the same thing.

I never have a problem with turnovers but I don't even attempt to run a half-court offense. When I play basketball at the local gym with my friends we move around more then these D1 athletes do in the game.

Have you tried using the different offensive sets? motion, flex, etc... or turning up your offensive tempo? I don't really run many plays, I just go based on the defense I see. If its man to man I usually either run pick n roll or pass it to the post and go to work. Against 2-3 zone i just pass around the perimeter until a good shooter is open and bomb away, or pass to the post and wait for the D to collapse and kick back out.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out how to do this . I know its called lead passing. You are supposed to hit the O button but when I do i cant get it to lead the guy to where I want.

i'm not talking about lead passing, i'm sayin with icon passing move the joystick in the direction you want your player to be moving (away from the defender) and itworks...
