Yeah, think of it as the bars for cell phone service, aka range. Your PG/SG will typically have the most range and thus bars behind the three point line, etc.

I haven't tested it, but if you're in an open legacy you can edit players at any point of the season, so you could allow them to play most of the season rated whatever, and then raise them around tournament time or something and they might still leave.
Cubsfan is right. The great thing about the Open Legacy is that you can wait until after the NCAA torney and go in and edit all of the potential attributes for the guys that are like Wall.

Great thread. As someone who stills plays the game, it is much appreciated. I do have a couple of questions though. I still, after looking though this thread, cannot for the life of me figure our how to put in my custom playbook in my legacy. I loaded it when I started the game up, then started my legacy, and its nowhere to be found. Another question I had, is there a way to set a pick, other than the pick and roll? Thanks in advance.

After you load your custom playbook and start your legacy. When you start your legacy game at the team select screen you can press "Y" for more game options. In there you can select things like time, court and also playbooks for both home and away teams. Just select custom playbook 1 or 2 depending on what you assigned it to when you loaded it and you're good to go.

I believe the only pick in the game is a pick and roll. You can also use off-ball control to select who you want to set the pick for you. But there is no pick and pop unless its involved with one of your set plays.

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)

So, I'm new to this thread (and am loving it!) but have played this game religiously for the last few years. I've read all of the previous posts (yes all 28 pages haha). And one thing that I noticed that no one had said was that you can change the coach profiles of the computer teams to make the teams play more like them - this is especially important defensively.

A great way to increase turnovers and just make running general half-court offense tougher is to change the opponents press to half-court press to Always, After Basket, or Occasionally depended on the frequency that that team does it. This does a pretty good job of extending the defense as you would see teams do. Duke, Kansas and Purdue are examples of teams that almost always pressure to half-court. Teams like Wisconsin, Illinois, North Carolina and Memphis will occasionally come out and guard you.

The best thing about the halfcourt press setting is that the computer guards the ball handler within arms length all the way to half court. Otherwise in man-to-man, the defense just lags off if you are far enough away from the basket so there is hardly ever a risk of a 5 count. If you don't want a five count, you'd better call your play before you cross half court. If no one is open right away, then just pass to the nearest teammate and then get it right back to your PG with a fresh five count to start the offense. With the half-court press on for the computer and if you're trying to run plays, you live in constant fear of the five count - as I'm sure that teams do when they play tough games against gritty teams.

Also, it makes running backdoor type plays very useful which how to teams IRL relieve the pressure of a smothering defense.

Note: Obviously it is much easier to beat your man in this defense if you just do the step out dribble over and over again, but I'm assuming that we are not cheesers here.

Very interesting, I'm going to try this tonight. One of the biggest problems with court spacing is that the CPU sags in so far because they can cover insane amount of space in a split second when closing out to shooters. Hopefully this helps. It certainly sounds more realistic in theory.

Tried your theory just now and I love it, adds yet another dimension to the game. I played one half of UConn/Louisville and there 3-4 more turnovers than you typically see (so six total lol).

For this, everyone should use controller configuration C IMO. It removes that step out dribble by only having one isomotion button. Plus you still have OBC and just one button for a hop-step. If you use the two-button ISO configuration and you have any halfway decent guard they'll turn into Allen Iverson out there - they can get by any defender at will every single time. Configuration C really reduces that IMO as the other iso moves are nowhere near as effective.

I've been updating Ruben's file and thought about that half court defense too the other day. Too many teams press by default. Glad to see it works!

I never even considered changing the configuration because I thought it would just randomly pick up a move when I press the isomotion button. But now, I see that it really just gives me the controls that somewhat mirror the NBA 2K series - which is much more realistic in terms of the mechanics of pulling off the move.

So now, I don't need the isomotion button at all because I can just execute the moves with the joystick and the top buttons as modifiers as 2K likes to call them in the NBA series.

Thanks for this because now, it feels more like basketball and less like a video game. However, I'm going to use config B because I'm not sure I can live without the joy that comes with a well-timed bounce pass in transition.

And I can't wait until I hit someone with a joystick-induced in and out move just beyond the arc and then drop off a bounce pass right around the FT line when the second defender comes up to help. Ah so real! Thanks again!

I just picked this back up, used... there was no book with it though. So does anyone know where I can find the instruction book online?

I used to be really angry when I played because I'd play Harangody and he'd score 4 points and get 3 shots. Recently I came up with a good idea, and changed teams before every game in my UConn legacy, and then messed with the opposing team's playbooks. I'd look who their best player(s) was, and then I'd make the plays work for them. So for Harangody I did a lot of plays for the center, and for Lazar Hayward I did SF. Gody dropped 22, and Hayward had 31. Also for every team I make one of the LB, LT, RB, or RT plays Quick Post Up, so that way teams will actually look into the post.
I will always, always be a Jets fan. But trust me it hurts.

This may be a little off for a question, but here goes:

I downloaded the 4 custom playbooks on 360 (thanks Catch28) but how do I know what playbook I should use for what team?

There's no right or wrong answer technically, you have to make the call. Look at their roster and determine what their strengths are (perimeter, post, balanced) and then give them the proper playbook. That part is obviuosly easy for powerhouse teams since you know them IRL, but if you're doing a career legacy then look at the opposition's roster before each game to see who their best players are, etc.

For balanced powerhouse teams, like '09 UNC team, I would recommend giving them the post heavy playbook because the game naturally favors guard play. If you give that team the balanced playbook Hansbrough will barely be a factor most games. 10 pts 8 reb kind of games, mostly on putbacks. He won't get the ball very often on the block.
