Compare Jordan the player and Russell the player and Jordan comes out on top.

We see alot of players wanting to be the next Jordan, dont know or hear of too many others wanting to be the next Russell.

Huh? Do you think Jordan could play back then? When Russell started to play he couldn't eat or sleep in many hotels in this country. Everyone loved Jordan but how would he cope when almost everyone hated him.

Russell not only played through pre civil rights era but he became the most successful athlete in America team sports history.

I can already see Jordan's logo becoming the new NBA logo. If that does'nt say GOAT, I dont know what is.

I was not yet 2 when Michael Jordan hit the winning basket for North Carolina to win the 1982 national championship.

I was 10 when he won his first NBA title with the Chicago Bulls.

I don't remember a time when Jordan was not considered the best to ever play basketball.

My older brother would watch in awe as Jordan floated through the air for a dunk. He'd say, "You have to watch this because you may never see someone do this again."

At the time, I just assumed he meant his ability to make plays that no one else could. Now, I realize it was more than that. It was how Jordan defined an era with class, grace and drive.
I think she put it pretty well...

They showed something on espn that Koby is the first one to average 35 pts a game since Michael Jordan, but when they compared Field Goal %, Jordan shot 54% koby 44%. MJ took alot of shots but he would average 50+% every single year. What Nba gaurds including Koby Bryant shoots over 50% in a season. He was a smart player and a guy that killed my team in the 90's the Knicks. It's hard to say who is the best player in other sports, but in basketball Mj is the best.

Re: What exactly did MJ do to make people consider him the GOAT?

Jordan was the most unstoppable player in the history of the league. His career is like a chronological progression of amazing feats...with each successive one possibly surpassing the previous.

In Jordans second year, after coming off a foot injury, the Bulls barely made the playoffs so they were matched up with the Celtics, a team some consider to be the best team of all time. Jordan goes off scoring 63 in the Garden all while fouling out Bostons premium frontline defenders single handedly.

Also Jordan had the best sense, compass if you till, around the basket. He would bounce of people, hang, contort, expose his back to the basket and still feather up a shot that would go in...and he would do this on a regular basis. He was so successful so often at this that he is the only player I have ever seen where I wouldnt call it 'slop'.

I could go on but one other thing I want to mention is that his physical skills alone put him up there. When he first entered the league he had one of the quickest first steps Ive ever seen...certainly the quickest first step for anyone over 6'4".

He could run a mile in under 5' and was the most competitive player the league has ever seen. Russell is up there too though in that category.

What surprises me is that someone has to EVEN ask about what makes Jordan the greatest. EVERYONE knows that M.J. is the standard by which basketball greatness is measured.

Re: What exactly did MJ do to make people consider him the GOAT?

Another thing that clearly puts MJ in a class by himself is that when he played, it was clear cut that he was the best. there were never any discussions over who was better, MJ or Drexler, or anything like that. now u have Kobe or T-mac or Vince or Lebron or Wade. With MJ, there was no doubt. the gap between him and the next greatest player when he played was ridiculously large. I can't even remember who could be considered 2nd best besides someone like Olajuwon.

I mean, everyone considered a star in the NBA is a guard now, in the '80s and '90s, MJ was THE ONLY GUARD of signifance not named Magic. and whoever brought up the hand check is brilliant. i don't think ppl realize how significant not being able to handcheck adds to ppls' point totals, it's so much easier to get in the lane now.

Now the gap between players is small, there's no ONE player in the league now that everyone considers the best, u can make arguments for several players. Duncan, KG, AI, Kobe, Lebron, etc.

MJ left no doubt, and if someone would even bring up another player might be better than him, next time they played he'd drop 50 on him just cuz he could and limit that person to like 16.

I could talk forever on MJ, so much has already been said in this thread. The fact that this is a thread still amazes me.

I mean, MJ got me to eat Wheaties 'til I was like 12. You know how bad Wheaties taste? Just the thought that maybe i could be like MJ had me eating wheaties, drinking gatorade and wearing nike.

SPTO post + Ehh post = Why MJ was the G.O.A.T.

Everyone has different things they like about a player. For me, it was the way MJ excelled at crushing the opponents will at the end of games. You just knew it was that time...game after game after game. He didn't have to force his offense like some of todays stars..he was just that much better than everyone else on the floor at all times, and when it was time to demoralize, he did it with ease. Everyone on the floor knew where the ball was going but they were still helpless. MJ always delivered. It wasn't even a big deal, you just expected it. God I miss that.

He was the most consistent game finisher in sports history.

Are you sure? When Jordan won his 6 rings was when Magic, Bird, and Ishiah was old. The teams he beat was Utah, Portland, and a declining Lakers team. Remember when the Pistons team use to send the Bulls home on the regular and how Rodman and co would get into Jordan head.

Russell was a special player in any era. What about Kareem. He won 6 Championships and was the most productive offensive players in the history of the NBA.
