The way the Lakers are built Kobe can't do that every game. Without changing how hes playing he'll get 8 assists one night and 2 the next just because nobody else is hitting shots. I think its kind of stupid that Kobe has to rely on the guys around him so much to win an individual award. Nash and Dirk each have 2-3 other all star candidates on their team while Odom is the closest guy to an all star for the Lakers. Why does Kobe have to get better teammates in order for him to be considered for the award? I thought it was for most valuable player, not best player on a 60+ win team filled with other good players.

Re: Vote for 2006-7 MVP Here
a team's record without a player that only missed a small handful of games should not a factor for the MVP. I dont know when that suddenly became such a factor. That is ridiculous.
anyway, here are my points about the MVP, that ive discussed too many times.
1. You dont have to get assists to make your team better
Assists are a big reason why Nash has been an MVP candidate. Nash is obviously great, and he is obviously a very good distributer. but if you want to bring up assists, it goes both ways. Nash also leads the western conference in turnovers and he leads all point guards in turnovers per game. There is only one player in the NBA with more turnovers than Nash (Dwight Howard) and there are no other true point guards close to Nash on the turnover list.
of course, his system inflates his turnovers...but that system inflates his other numbers as well.
Nash is more flashy because of the run and gun system that he runs and that is a reason why he is such a major candidate. It's a very entertaining system to watch.
2. Nash never won MVPs because of stats. He was the 4th leading scorer on his own team in his first MVP year.
if you want to bring up Nash's shooting percentage then you should bring up Dirk's as well. Dirk's shooting percentages this season have been in Larry Bird territory. People try to downplay it because he is a big man but that doesnt make any sense. It's impressive regardless.
this season, Dirk Nowitzki became the first player since Larry Bird (and only player besides Bird in NBA history) to average at least 20 points a game (24.6, 9th in NBA) while shooting 50% from the field, 40% from 3 point range, and 90% from the line. It was a historical season for Dirk.
3. You cant determine the MVP by calculating what player's team has lost the most games while that player is out. If that became the main criteria, then players that didnt miss games would be ineligible for the award. The award has never been determined that way and it would be a bad precedent to set for the award.
the Suns going 2-4 without him is hardly a reason to give Nash an award. If we are going to give the award based on what player's team lost the most games while a player was out, then a player besides Nash would win that anyway. There are players besides Nash who's team has worse winning percentages when that player is out. Perhaps Shawn Marion should win it? The SUns are 0-2 without Marion.
Nash plays point guard. A team playing without a point guard is like a football team playing without it's quarterback. I guess point guards should win the award every year from here on out because that position is probably the most important in the NBA.
i would also say that a player that doesnt miss games is more "valuable" to their team than a player that does miss games.
Dirk has missed fewer games than most in the past few seasons. This year, he didnt miss many, and the Mavs only held him out against bad teams. Dirk didnt miss a game against a good team.
4. there is a formula called the Roland Rating that calculates how important a player's performance is to that team winning. Dirk leads in that formula. http://www.82games.com/0607/0607DAL.HTM
Dirk is obviously the engine for the Mavs. Dirk has been the driving force on this mission they have been on this year and without him, Dallas is no longer a contender.
5. team wins were a big reason why Nash won MVPs, and it's a main reason why he is a candidate this year. The Suns have been on the Mavs' coat tails all season and were obviously not able to catch them. The main reason for that is Dirk. Whatever Dirk has done this season on and off the court, it has worked, and it has been better than what Nash has done on and off the court this year. Dirk has won the regular season race.
the Mavs had the 6th best record in NBA history this season. Dirk is a big reason for that.
6. People put all of this stock into how bad the Suns were 3 years ago. Nash already won MVPs because of that. You cant continue to give Nash MVPs because the Suns were bad 3 years ago.
btw, a rookie Amare carried a much worse Suns team to the playoffs before Nash ever arrived in Phoenix. Nash was still in Dallas getting outplayed by Tony Parker and Mike Bibby.
another btw, how could Dallas get better so quickly after losing Nash? The Mavs are better now than they ever were with Nash and the Mavs had some loaded teams back then. Im not saying that Nash leaving was the reason why Dallas got better, but it's interesting that the team COULD get better after losing a multiple MVP caliber of player.
the main reason why Dallas got better after losing Nash is because Dirk has gotten better after losing Nash. Dirk has been the one constant on the Mavs through their mini rebuilding process. Dallas overhauled their system and their roster. Dirk deserves some credit for getting BETTER despite losing basically everything around him.
7. If anyone says that Dirk has a better supporting cast then they are crazy. Dirk does have a very good supporting cast, but he does not have a center the caliber of Amare to help him out. Dirk does not play with anyone the caliber of Amare.
The Suns have 3 all-stars, and the probable 6th man of the year. They have a loaded roster. I know Nash has won MVPs because of lack of supporting cast but that is not a reason to give him the award this year. If you want to give MVPs because of lack of supporting cast, then neither Dirk or Nash would be candidates. Both players have good supporting casts. but that is not a good criteria to use in determining MVPs.Last edited by ZB9; 04-21-2007, 02:59 PM.Comment

Nash because he's just so gritty and he runs around, and makes crazy shots, has very weird hair...."Never trust a big butt and a smile."-Ricky Bell

Re: Vote for 2006-7 MVP Here
and that's the problem. Thinking taking 45 shots to score 50 and a worse record than the previous year will get you an MVP.
Is value really in points?
Oh, and I think Mcgrady is a player that folks aren't giving any consideration when its as clear as day.
His team is worse without him than the Suns without Nash.
All in all, I'd say Nash, but he will most likely lose out to Dirk.Comment

I love how people become completely enamored with points but disregard the fact that in certain scenarios, it doesn't lead to team success. T-Mac is a top 5 team player in the league, and boosts the level of play of the entire Rockets team when he's on the court.Comment
