Re: NBA Ref Fixing Games?
Contrary to what others have been saying, I think this is what the NBA needs right now if they treat it as the wakeup call that it is. I have a hard time believing that one referee could effect that many outcomes of that many games to that extent, but right now the NBA is making a very strong effort to make sure the investigation begins and ends with Donaghy. I guess we'll see.
Even if it is only one guy though, I hope it leads to increased vigilance on the part of the NBA when it comes to questionable officiating. Because this issue has been on the table for too long while Stern and company have done next to nothing about it. This is a wakeup call for them because it hurts their image, which will in turn hurt them at the gate.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

He just can't come out and say it, it being the mob and all, so he put the information into his CD like Tupac.
Unfortunately, no one bought his cd.Comment

The NBA & the sanctimonious David Stern will do all in their power to make this appear to be a rogue ref. Their buisness partners in the media (ESPN/ABC) will do as all broadcasters do, which is deny there is any funny business going on among the zebras. They'll instead inundate us w/Michael Vick, Selig & Bonds, Sheffield/Torre & whatever other useless, unimportant, trivial, minor sports story out there.
Truth is, anybody who thinks there is nothing going on out there among the officials & gambling is fooling themselves. From the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, MLS, AFL, MLL, & what ever sports initials you can think of, it is super naive to believe gambling hasn't infiltrated the refs' locker room. Just how much of it is infested is the only sane question. Oklahoma-Oregon, tuck rule, Hasselbeck getting an illegal block flag while making a tackle in the Super Bowl, Dwayne Wade's endless parade to the foul line, if you didn't see this you were creating a fantasy in your mind.
I remember when they had that AzSt point shaving scandal. The guy that did it set a Devil record for 3's his 1st time trying it. That just shows how easy it is to disguise it.Originally posted by VP Richard M. Re: NBA Ref Fixing Games?
I know I'm stating the obvious here but this is pretty much a worst case scenario for the NBA. The league is already a joke to a lot of people and if it's true that this ref was fixing games then all the people saying the NBA is a joke will be justified.Comment

Re: NBA Ref Fixing Games?
Agree totally. Imagine if it came out that the ref had money on Miaimi to win v. Dallas the NBA Finals.
Suddenly all those D Wade touch fouls make sense / suddenly the whole leagues cred is gone.
Depending on who it is and which games...this could be massive.Comment

Re: NBA Ref Fixing Games?
The damage is not just tangible (i.e. actually fixed games). It is also the idea that the rules of the game could be manipulated by an outside force. Who's to say there aren't other refs that place other motives (maybe not gambling debts) before their actions on the court.University of Oregon

That's the realy big problem here. The perception.
Once one ref gets busted...everyone will claim every bad call is due to "they're all in on it". One guy getting caught, normally translates to everyone being inferred.
Tough one. Not sure how the NBA will get out of this...
The Op Sports NBA Finals forums are already about 50% full of "the refs are cheating" posts every April / May and June...it's going to be hell unleashed next season if some bad calls happenComment
