And at the end of the game, Tommy Heihnson (sp? I'm not a celtic fan ) talked to a ref at the end of the game about how badly it was called and the ref replied "Merry Christmas." Anyways does anyone know who officiated it?

That game has stuck in my mind for a while now. I'm not saying it was tainted or corrupted but it was really weird watching it.

Not only does this make me a bit skeptical in the game of basketball, but it kind of makes me wonder about all the other sports as well... I mean baseball is determined by 'judgment' calls of the umpires.. one strike here one ball there.. game changes drastically. Basically anytime there's an iffy call or a bad game, it'll be in question. Was it fixed? I can see this issue being worse than steroids.

Hah yeah Ken Mauer, that's the main guy I was trying to remember. Slick little man, reminds me of Fonzy. Didn't him and a bunch of refs keep trading in their first class tickets for coach tickets and making money, and got in trouble for not reporting their earnings to the IRS, lol. Completely unrelated to this bad apple Donaghy but still, his sinister stare strikes fear into me.

That is what I'm so ticked off about. Stern was so happy to put his foot on the neck of these "spoiled, delinquent, image destroyers" that were wearing the jerseys. Enforcing a dress code & having zero tolerance. Then he allows middle america, middle class to gamble, try to run down civil servants & commit arson w/out lifting a finger.

If some of the reports I'm hearing are true, that the NBA knew of Donaghey betting before the offseason, despite distributing an 8 page pamphlet to refs that no gambling was allowed, period; then they shouldn't wait to see who else is involved. Stern should resign immediately.

If its all true that games were fixed, how can this be made up for the team that got screwed?? This was the suns year to make it and it was so possible to win it all.

The Suns have now a vendetta for next year. Mark Cuban was doing the right thing all along complaing about the refs.

David Stern will be holding a press conference at 11:00 AM ET. It will be shown on NBATV as well as NBA.com.

I'll be recording it, as I guess it could be a historic event (albeit a negative one) in the league's history.

Please, it will be nothing more than damage control. Here's an outline and I bet I get pretty close.

                        1. Thank you for coming ladies and gents.
                        2. We are going to cooperate fully with authorities
                        3. We will do our own internal investigation into this matter
                        4. Don't know if more refs were involved.
                        5. Over the next few weeks we will be meeting to see if we can prevent this in the future.
                        6. I still think the NBA is the best league in the world.

I heard on ESPN radio late last night that the Daily News out of NY is reporting that the NBA had been investigating Donaghy's gambling practices and such since LAST year.

How the hell do you allow a ref that you've been investigating for the past year officiate playoff games much less the Finals?!

The very thing he tried to protect blew up in his face.

Now the fans and players are all going to have in the back of their minds for bad calls if this ref is crooked.

Probably, but it will still be nice to have something to look back on and connect to the situation a few years from now. I'm especially curious to see where the league goes from here. There's a lot of improvement that could be achieved in the league, and depending on where it goes from here it could get much much worse, or actually improve.

Couldn't the government have told them not to suspend him? If they are also trying to nail the people Donaghy has worked with, wouldn't it be unwise to have the bait suspended out of the blue?

His mob connections would have ditched him and the government would have nothing to work with.

Second, even if the government wasn't involved, it is not like the NBA can tap Donaghy's phone or check his computer records. At best they can hire a private investigator to follow him around and see where he goes.
