I also watch almost every Laker game and I have noticed that Kobe is only double-teamed when the defense realizes he is about to drive. However, if he is staying out on the perimeter, he is rarely doubled.
Also, he isn't nearly doubled as much as MJ was.
Thirdly, MJ faced triple-teams many nights.
These guys can argue until their faces turn blue, but after watching MJ for so many years (in his younger days) and watching Kobe now, I still don't think you can compare the two. I honestly think that this is the NBA's ploy to try and get more people to watch by "re-creating" MJ. And who better to do it than Kobe, who does everything based on MJ's game and plays in a large market? The NBA realizes that once Jordan leaves, they are losing a HUGE revenue-making part of the league and they need to make it up in other ways. Therefore, they quickly make the public think Kobe is the next MJ. When MJ was younger, he didn't suddenly jump to being the GOAT. He had to put up consistent numbers year in and year out. And it wasn't until he won titles that any talk of GOAT came up. Yes, Kobe has 3 titles, but take Kobe off that team and put TMac and I honestly think they definitely win those 3 titles. But take MJ off those Bulls and you have garbage. And to even mention Kobe's defense in the same sentence as MJ's is a sin. It took years for MJ to be considered the greatest. Coincidence that as soon as MJ retires, Kobe (not TMac) suddenly becomes the potential greatest. Everyone is so blinded by what the ESPN analysts and NBA analysts say that they lose their own perspective and ideas. They just listen to what they hear. Those analysts are paid to say what they say. We should stop these silly comparisons. When their careers are over, then we can start again.
