Re: Selfish Players
It's like that everytime someone says something about his boy that he doesn't like. Used to it. EC you talk about personal bias, but yeah your defending obviously has nothing to do with him being your guy on your team right? you speak of agendas, so what's your's?
Anyway, like I said, Kobe is the obvious answer. If you want to get mad at that and still say he is a top 5 player in terms of selfishness is laughable. That's how Family Feud lists are completed, you go with the obvious answers to get the most points.
You said we call selfish because of stuff before the past several years. When it's pointed out that he showcased typical Kobe selfishness just last year before the season, you come to the defense that it was off the court. But the little stunt he pulled had the potential to determine what happened on the Lakers court, so now what? If Kobe's whining, crying and **** talking in parking lots ended in him getting traded, what would you be saying then.
The dude is selfish, and to be honest, argue as you like, call people simps and whatever lame *** names you've picked up as much as you like, there's really nothing you can say to make me think otherwise. It has nothing to do with my personal bias. Sure I don't like the guy, but I love Jordan and know he was a selfish player too. Kobe finally broke down and decided to be more of a team player this season so now that's supposed to make me forget about everything up to that point, including the stuff that happened pre-season and his regression in the Olympics? Uh uh.PS: You guys are great.

Re: Selfish Players
Over the course of Kobe Bryant's recent career, people said he had to be selfish in order to win games, that he wouldn't play like that if he had good players around him. When he got the chance to play all of those games with the Olympic team, however, he played the exact same way... even by the end of the Olympics, after months of practice. None of the other stars had games where they took bad shot after bad shot and still kept shooting instead of moving the ball around. You even made comments about how selfish he was playing during those games and even acknowledged he played selfish in the Finals, by far the two largest basketball stages today. This isn't something you should ignore just because it goes against your opinion.
I just think that dude likes to shoot. It's been a knock on him for a while now. He'd rather take the shot than have someone else do it at pretty much every point in the game. Some might call it confidence, but I think he plays more on the selfish side of basketball. The reason he gets away with it is because he's so talented, hard working and skilled and has played on such great teams.
The Finals before Shaq left, that's when all of the selfish talk started really coming out, when he shot the Lakers out of a championship against the Pistons. It got even more pronounced when he started losing games the three or so years before Pau. Put him back on a championship-caliber squad, and the selfish talk goes away... until he loses again in this year's Finals. There's a direct correlation here between winning and losing and public attitude about Kobe's selfishness, even though he's played basically the same way throughout his career. Player's flaws are many times covered up by their team's successes. I think, in this case, it really stands out with Kobe. If the US team lost in one of Kobe's horrible shooting nights, you best believe he would've been vilified by the media and basketball fans for his selfishness. Luckily our team was so good that he could've missed 40 consecutive shots and we would have won regardless... which is why you didn't hear more about his shaky play.
Calling Kobe a selfish player is not an outrageous statement to make. It's still just an opinion, but it is backed with a good amount of justification. If you have a differing opinion, fine. Just don't throw out valid points because you don't like them.
Ex, you seem real heated over this, but what's funny is you yourself, even the most devout Kobe lover say he's top 5. So who cares if other people have him at #1 instead of #5? It's not that serious. The point is he's selfish. The Ricky's, Franchises, Walker's, Deshawn's, etc. are all not on his level superstar-wise so they might not be "obvious answers".
Gil and Melo however, are definitely up there. Picking any of them as "King selfish" (I don't know who even said that) is like me saying Bron and you saying Duncan as the best in the league. They're both top 5 players so who cares??Comment

Wow... great thread. Though you really shouldn't have had to go to those lengths to prove your point. Put me on the side of "Kobe is an obvious answer so lets move on".

The thread was trash to begin with, it serves no real purpose and brings out nothing but simpleton ness.
Melo gets a DUI in the playoffs, is a blackhole, yet #24 is the obvious "most selfish player in the league". Right. Simpleton.Comment

Heated, LOL we all know how the regulars here feel about the guy. This is a tired tired subject so heated is not the right word at all.

Re: Selfish Players
I think alot of people have Kobe's "will to win" mistaken for "selfishness." If you compare Kobe's 06-07 and 07-08 seasons you will see he played more minutes in 07-08 but took more shots in 06-07 and thats because his teammates finally stepped up and proved themselves in 07-08. In 06-07 his teammates were bums and thats why he shot 30-40 a night...to give his team a chance to win.
I don't like or respect Kobe as a person but I respect him as a basketball player. I respect his competitive nature and willingness to win.Comment

Re: Selfish Players
You might say that any player who scores around 28-30 a game is selfish. But in some cases it's just what the coach wants. Of course every coach likes to see a team game, but if you have a great scorer on your team - the coach probably asks him to score alot. I don't think Phil ever tells Kobe to stop scoring. Same with Wade, LeBron, Iverson etc.
**Edit**
Actually I was wrong, Wilt scored 100 points because he was selfish, no other explanation.Last edited by youvalss; 09-21-2008, 06:33 AM.My Specs:
