They had Clyde Drexler already and needed a Center. Sam Bowie was no slouch at Kentucky and nobody knew MJ was going to be the greatest of all time..

Portland had Roy/Outlaw/Webster and needed a Center. Oden was supposed to be the next big thing.

You draft on need unless you don't have any needs.

According to this article, Oden's knee did not appear to make any contact with Brooks. Man, if he can dislocate his knee cap without contact, I think he should quit while he can still walk. First, microfracture surgery without even playing a single NBA game. Now he dislocated his knee without contact. Seems like the guy is falling apart.

Yep, to me it looked liked he just jumped up and down.

With Big Men sometimes their bones can't carry all that weight, fractures and what not. Not a DR. but it's similar to Yao, except Yao has played more games than Oden.

It sucks that he's so injury prone. He didn't even get hit on that injury, it looks like it broke when he planted. I've met him once, he's a good guy. Hope he can get well and have a productive career.

He was averaging almost 9 rebounds a game.....in 24 minutes!

The only player who had higher rebounds and blocks per 48 minutes is Dwight Howard. Damn shame.

Damn, the only good news is he is young and hopefully he will healed from this, but man 2 major knee surgeries in what 2 years damn. Big men have a hard time bouncing back from major knee surgeries. Like i said Oden is young and hopefully being young, he can heal from this, and return back to fuill strength hopefully.

So worst case scenario and i hope god forbids it, he never return back to his old form what would you do if ur the owner. Trade him and hopefully someone bites on it and get a couple of picks or a decent veteran.

Man with Kevin Durnat becoming such a force now, and Oden keep getting injuried, the MJ/Sam Bowiie Draft comparison will never go away until Oden becomes a stud.

Only silver lining is no ligament damage.

Its a shame, becasue it was looking like he was coming out of that "raw" stage, and looking like he was starting to develop a feel for the game.

Truth be told, he has a body of a 80 yr old man, very fragile.
Didn't Walton have a rather illustrous college career. Whereas Oden played one year at Ohio St.

I'm not even trying to joke, but his knees are about as old as he looks.

Most patella fractures are actually due to indirect trauma actually. Not from a direct blow or fall or anything like that.

It's due to the quadriceps tendon and patellar ligament exerting a lot of stress on the knee cap. Forced muscle contraction causes the fracture.

Blake Griffin pretty much had the same thing happen with him. Nobody touched him. It was from him jumping.

There has to be a difference somewhere though. If Griffin has the same injury, why is he expected back much earlier than Oden? Is Oden's body that much more fragile, or was his injury worse?

                              Oden is Sam Bowie v2.

An injury prone center drafted by Portland over the dominant guard/forward.

While I'm not completely sure about the extent of both player's injuries. I'm pretty sure the difference is due to Greg Oden having a complete fracture of the patella and Blake Griffin just having a stress fracture.

So to answer your question, yes, Greg Oden's injure is worse.

Greg Oden's requires surgery. Blake Griffin's does not.
